Coronation Street finally says farewell to Deirdre Barlow
Six months after the death of Anne Kirkbride, it's time for Weatherfield residents to give Deirdre Barlow her send-off.

"It's totally and absolutely out of the blue, and in complete contrast to what we were expecting, so it's a terrible shock," explains actor Bill Roache, who's played Ken since the soap's first episode in 1960.

"When something really big happens, you don't do anything. You're dumbstruck, literally – bang. If it's something as awful as that, you don't scream, you don't shout, you don't cry, you are just literally struck dumb. So that's how I played it."

'Coronation Street' Star Anne Kirkbride Dead at 60

William Roache spoke about co-star Anne Kirkbride at Wednesday night’s National Television Awards.
Longtime Coronation Street star Anne Kirkbride has died. She was 60.

NEWS: Why TV Is Dead, Erika Slezak, Anne Kirkbride, Chandra Wilson, Stephen Root, Meg Ryan

Forbes: Why Television Is Dead
Online video dollars had been coming from online budgets until about a year ago. Initially, marketers were saying, 'I'm not willing to move my dollars out of television. This is not a proven medium for me. Therefore, I’m [only] willing to move my online dollars – some of which I know exactly what I'm getting when I spend it, just like I do on television. Some of it I don’t necessarily know what I’m getting for it, or it’s experimental, or I’m doing it for objectives that might be secondary or tertiary – I’ll play around with those dollars.'.”

The jump we’re about to experience, from 2013 to 2014 media dollars represents mainstream media buyers pointing a firehose of new money at the emerging web video creation market. In 2013, 20 brands. Competitrack’s Online Video Ad Tracking service reported, spent more than $10 million. Estimates from eMarketer indicate that US digital video ad spending will nearly double in only four years, climbing from $4.14 billion this year to $8.04 billion in 2016.

ONE LIFE TO LIVE's Erika Slezak" 'I was hired to act. Not to make demands, to bitch, or write.'
"I would ask questions, but there were only two times when I said 'I can't do this.' When I signed on to the show, I was hired to act. Not to make demands, to bitch, or write. As an actress, my job is always the same: make the audience believe. If I do that, I have done my job."

“When I was 27, I proposed to my then girlfriend, but I didn’t do it for the right reasons. We’d been going out for a year or so and I felt under pressure from society. I was thinking, ‘This is the age when I should probably start having kids so this is what I should do…’ But after I did it (proposed), I immediately felt in my heart it wasn’t right. My instant thought was ‘What did you just do?’”

Morrison later ended the engagement and admits it was an awful experience, but he learned a lot.

Did Susan Lucci Dodge a Bullet? Revived Soaps in Disarray
It seems in retrospect that when Prospect Park announced the cut back to two episodes per week rather than four of each, the company knew it was running out of money. Now they’ve doubled how long their backlog of episodes will last. So it had nothing to do with their “viewer survey.” It was simply about stockpiling episodes.

NEWS: William Roache To Be Honored in New York, And Meet ATWT's Don Hastings

William Roache to be honored in New York next month for Guinness World Records
The 78-year-old British actor - who has played Ken Barlow for almost 50 years after appearing in Corrie's first episode in December 1960 - will officially become the longest-serving actor in a TV soap on November 22. Bill is set to overtake the current title holder, Don Hastings from American soap As The World Turns, who he will meet at the New York ceremony in November.

Roache first appeared as Ken on December 9, 1960. Hastings played Bob Hughes in AS THE WORLD TURNS show since October 1960 without a break, but ATWT ended in September after 13,858 episodes, so Roache is now set to take the title and has already been entered into the Guinness Book of World Records. Basic-cable shows are multiplying—and changing the way TV is made. Can the major networks learn from them?
As the media landscape changes and viewers flock to shows they like wherever they air, series on basic cable are still a junior circuit compared with the networks, but their universe keeps expanding, attracting better talent and growing in vibrancy. Once the province of reruns and sports, basic-cable networks will spend an estimated $23 billion on 1,462 original programs (including reality shows and specials), compared with $14 billion on 863 shows in 2005, research firm SNL Kagan reports.
