'Salem' Renewed for Second Season by WGN America

TV Guide Magazine reports (via their Facebook page) that Salem has been renewed for a second season by WGN America. The 13-episode second season will debut in 2015.

Salem re-imagines the infamous witch trials in 17th century Massachusetts. The series stars Janet Montgomery, Shane West, Seth Gabel, Ashley Madekwe, Xander Berkeley, Tamzin Merchant, Elise Eberle, and Iddo Goldberg.

The series is co-created and written by award-wining Brannon Braga and Adam Simon who serve as executive producers alongside Prospect Park's Josh Barry and Jeff Kwatinetz, as well as David Von Ancken.

'Salem' Preview: Fear of Witches Living in the Town Escalates

The first season of Salem, WGN America's first original scripted series, continues on Sunday, May 4 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Salem, which re-imagines the infamous witch trials in 17th century Massachusetts, stars Janet Montgomery, Shane West, Seth Gabel, Ashley Madekwe, Xander Berkeley, Tamzin Merchant, Elise Eberle, and Iddo Goldberg.

In this week's episode, "In Vain," Salem trembles in the aftermath of the trial, and Anne turns to John Alden for comfort. Mysterious circumstances lead Alden to suspect Magistrate Hale is not who or what he appears to be. Mary discovers who witnessed the witches’ ceremony and deliberates a course of action. Elsewhere, George Sibley begins hatching a plan to escape Mary’s clutches.

WGN America's 'Salem' Casts a Ratings Spell with 2.3 Million Total Viewers and 886,000 Adults 18-49 on the Night

The series debut of Salem, WGN America's first original scripted series burst out of the gate, bewitching audiences on television's highly competitive Sunday night, skyrocketing to an impressive 2.3 million Total Viewers and 886,000 Adults 18-49, during four combined airings on the network. The premiere telecast at 10 p.m. ET, delivered a superb 1.5 million Total Viewers and 647,000 Adults 18-49, a +635% increase over the network's Adults 18-49 season-to-date average on Sundays at 10 p.m. Additionally, it ranked as WGN America's best telecast performance in more than seven years, since 2007.

WGN America Relaunches as Destination for Original Content: SALEM, MANHATTAN and TEN COMMANDMENTS

With a clearly focused strategic mission, a new logo and an expanded primetime lineup of powerful and provocative programming, WGN America (WGNA) is relaunching to become a top-tier general entertainment cable network, driven by high-quality, distinctive original content. The announcement was made today by Matt Cherniss, President and General Manager, WGN America and Tribune Studios, during WGN America's first-ever presentation to the Television Critics Association (TCA).

In support of the launch, WGNA has made bold moves, ordering straight to series the production of two standout, scripted dramas: SALEM, to premiere Sunday, April 20, 2014, and MANHATTAN, to start production in New Mexico in March for a July 2014 premiere.

WGN America has released the first official trailer for its debut series, SALEM. Set in the volatile world of 17th century Massachusetts, SALEM explores what really fueled the town's infamous witch trials and dares to uncover the dark, supernatural truth hiding behind the veil of this infamous period in American history. In SALEM, witches are real, but they are not who or what they seem. The show, which centers on an epic romance wrapped around this explosive revelation, delivers a bold new vision of Salem -- and an even bolder new vision of witches.

WGN America Picks Up MANHATTAN - Network Orders Original Drama Series from Skydance Television, Tribune Studios and Lionsgate Television

WGN America has ordered the drama series MANHATTAN from Skydance Television, Tribune Studios and Lionsgate Television, the TV division of Lionsgate

For Tribune Studios and Skydance Television, MANHATTAN will be the first entry into producing scripted content for their respective newly formed divisions. MANHATTAN also marks WGN America's second original series since beginning its aggressive push into the scripted programming arena earlier this year.

WGN America Orders Original Series SALEM From FOX 21, Prospect Park and Producers Brannon Braga & Adam Simon

WGN America has ordered the drama series SALEM from award-winning producers Brannon Braga (24, STAR TREK: TNG, VOYAGER & ENTERPRISE) and Adam Simon (THE HAUNTING OF CONNECTICUT) it was announced today by Matt Cherniss , President/GM, WGN America. The series hails from Fox 21 (HOMELAND, SONS OF ANARCHY), the prolific cable production division of Twentieth Century Fox Television, and marks the first original scripted series for WGN America as it begins to aggressively expand its programming slate.
