Soap operas and late night talk shows will continue without interruption thanks to a tentative agreement between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. Below is a press release from the WGA with additional details.

WGA Reaches Tentative Agreement with AMPTP

Dear Colleagues-

Your Negotiating Committee is pleased to report that we have reached a tentative agreement with the AMPTP that we can recommend for ratification.

In it, we made gains in minimums across the board - as well as contribution increases to our Health Plan that should ensure its solvency for years to come. And we further expanded our protections in Options and Exclusivity.

'Days of our Lives' Writer Melissa Salmons To Receive the Richard B. Jablow Award at 2016 WGA Awards

Melissa Salmons won her fourth WGA Award
in 2014. It was the first one for her work at
Days of our Lives.
The Writers Guild of America, East (WGAE) announced on Friday that Days of our Lives writer Melissa Salmons will be honored with the Richard B. Jablow Award at the 68th annual Writers Guild Awards at the Edison Ballroom in New York City on February 13.

The Jablow award was established in 1978 to recognize devoted service to the Guild. It was created in honor of Richard B. Jablow, who helped found the WGAE, authored its constitution and served as its first counsel.

A Guild member since 1986, Salmons won a Daytime Emmy Award Award for her writing at both Guiding Light and As the World Turns, with 7 nominations total over the years. She has won four Writers Guild Awards and received another eleven nominations. She has also written for One Life to Live, The Young and the Restless and Another World during her career.

Salmons was elected to two terms on the WGAE’s council and has served on multiple committees, including the MBA negotiating committee, the elections committee and co-chair of the future members committee. She is currently a trustee of the Writers’ Guild-Industry Health Fund and the Producer-Writers Guild of America Pension Plan.

Soap Opera Writers Being Bullied Into Signing Waivers Cutting Pay and Scripts?

According to a story on Deadline.com, more and more soap opera writers are being “bullied” by producers into requesting waivers from the WGA to take pay cuts. Deadline sites guild sources, one of whom described it as a “particularly insidious” problem that’s “cropping up regularly on daytime TV.” The guild has been powerless to do anything about it because the writers are afraid that they’ll lose their jobs if they speak up.

WGA sources say that veteran CBS soaps The Bold and the Beautiful and The Young and the Restless are the ones the guild has received the most complaints about. The guild’s contract requires a show’s soap writers to be given one assignment a week, but writers can ask for a waiver to cut back on the workload if they have a legitimate reason, such as illness or a family emergency.

Some producers allegedly have been gaming the system by bullying less-favored writers into asking the guild for waivers to reduce their assignments by one or more a month, even though they actually want to continue working full time. Sources say that some writers have been forced to give up a script or two a month so that an actor or a line producer can write a show or so a new writer can be brought in at no extra cost.

WGA Study Finds TV Writing Remains A White Man's World

In its latest analysis of the state of diversity in writing for TV, the Writers Guild of America, West finds that while there have been some recent job gains for minority and women writers, the employment playing field in Hollywood is far from level. The 2013 TV Staffing Brief analyzes employment patterns for 1,722 writers working on 190 broadcast and cable TV shows during the 2011-2012 season, highlighting three specific groups who have traditionally been underemployed in the TV industry: women, minority, and older writers.
