ABC Family Renews 'Switched at Birth," Cancels 'Twisted'

Switched at Birth will airs its third season
finale next week.
ABC Family today announced the network has picked up a fourth season of its hit drama Switched at Birth. The third season finale of the Peabody Award-winning series airs Monday, August 18th at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Switched at Birth remains one of basic cable's strongest dramas this summer, ranking as cable TV's #1 series in its time period in key female demos.

"Fans will be clamoring for season four and to know what happens with Daphne and Bay after the season three finale next week," said Tom Ascheim, President ABC Family.

The critically-acclaimed Switched at Birth tells the story of two teenage girls who discover they were accidentally switched as newborns in the hospital. Despite overwhelming socio-economic and ethnic differences, both families must learn to co-exist as parents and blend their lives into one for the sake of their daughters.

Meanwhile, Twisted will not return after failing to catch on with fans after one season.

In Tuesday's ratings race, Pretty Little Liars emerged as Tuesday's #1 cable TV telecast at 8 o'clock for the 105th-consecutive original telecast in Females 12-34 (1.1 million/2.4 rating) - each telecast since its June 2010 series debut - 57th in Adults 18-34 (844,000/1.2 rating), 64th in Women 18-34 (672,000/2.0 rating), 60th in Women 18-49 (902,000/1.4 rating) and 68th in Viewers 12-34 (1.3 million/1.4 rating).

At 9 o'clock, Chasing Life surged to series highs in Adults 18-34 (521,000/0.8 rating), Women 18-34 (443,000/1.3 rating), Adults 18-49 (730,000/0.6 rating) and Women 18-49 (590,000/0.9 rating), and garnered near series highs in Total Viewers (1.3 million), Viewers 12-34 (724,000/0.8 rating) and Females 12-34 (639,000/1.4 rating), behind only its series launch in mid-June. Moreover, Chasing Life stood as the night's #1 cable TV telecast in the hour in Women 18-34 and Females 12-34.

TWISTED "Sins of the Father" Preview

Danny and Karen both find it difficult to leave their past transgressions behind in "Sins of the Father," the all-new episode of ABC Family serial TWISTED, airing Tuesday, February 18th at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

Danny struggles to come to terms with the latest development in the search for his father. While he is determined to come clean, he wonders if he truly deserves the chance to start his life over. Lacey becomes convinced of a connection between Gloria Crane (guest star Jessica Tuck) and Vikram, while Charlie (recurring guest star Jack Falahee) becomes increasingly interested in Lacey’s actions.

ABC Family Announces January Return Date for New Series RAVENSWOOD, TWISTED Back in February

ABC Family announced today that recent series RAVENSWOOD will return with new episodes on January 7, 2014, paired with PRETTY LITTLE LIARS. TWISTED will also return with all-new episodes on Tuesday, February 11, 2014, after RAVENSWOOD finishes its run.

RAVENSWOOD premiered October 22, 2013, as ABC Family's #1 series premiere in the network's history in Women 18-34 and cable TV's biggest drama debut in the demo in nearly three years. Additionally, the series premiere amassed the most tweets of any new TV series premiere this season, reaching over three million people and generating over 16 million impressions. The show will air its midseason finale on November 19, 2013.

ABC Family Announces January Premiere Dates For PRETTY LITTLE LIARS, TWISTED, SWITCHED AT BIRTH and THE FOSTERS

ABC Family will kick off the New Year with all new episodes of returning original hit series and fan favorites PRETTY LITTLE LIARS, TWISTED, SWITCHED AT BIRTH, and THE FOSTERS, all of which are set to premiere the second week of January 2014, with two nights of original programming.

The hit ABC Family original series PRETTY LITTLE LIARS returns on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 8:00 - 9:00 p.m. ET/PT. As the Liars go looking for answers about Alison and try to make sense of their lives for the past year, a darker side of Ezra emerges. PRETTY LITTLE LIARS won six Teen Choice Awards in 2013, including Choice TV Show, Choice Summer TV Show, Choice TV Actress Drama - Lucy Hale, Choice TV Actor Drama - Ian Harding, Choice Summer TV Actress - Troian Bellisario, Choice Summer TV Actor - Keegan Allen and Choice TV Villain - Janel Parrish. According to SocialGuide, PRETTY LITTLE LIARS summer finale became the #1 "most social" TV series episode in history, breaking records with over 1.9 million tweets. ABC Family will air a special PRETTY LITTLE LIARS marathon on Tuesday, January 7, from 12:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. ET/PT, leading up to the premiere. The special Halloween episode premieres tomorrow night, Tuesday, October 22, at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT, on ABC Family.

ABC Family Ranks as Cable TV’s #1 Network in Primetime for the 2nd Consecutive Summer in Women 18-34

During Summer 2013, powered by its largest array of original series in the network’s history, ABC Family ranked as cable TV’s #1 network in primetime for the 2nd consecutive summer in Women 18-34 (282,000), placed a solid #2 in Females 12-34 (444,000) and was a Top 5 contender in Women 18-49 (#4 – 434,000) and Viewers 12-34 (#5 – 576,000).

Winner of seven 2013 Teen Choice Awards – the most for this year’s ceremony – including Choice TV Show: Drama – PRETTY LITTLE LIARS stood as TV’s #1 series in Females 12-34, Teens 12-17 and Female Teens, cable TV’s #1 series in Women 18-34 and the #1 scripted basic cable TV series in Women 18-49.

A secret with the power to exonerate Danny forces Lacey to choose between justice and popularity in the summer finale episode of TWISTED titled "Out With the In-Crowd," airing Tuesday, August 27th at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC Family.

A confrontation between Danny and Archie at a soccer team party reveals treachery lurking among the in-crowd. Lacey must make a choice to keep her popular friends, at Danny's expense, or speak out for what she thinks is right. Tyler continues to pursue Jo and Jo makes a decision she might regret. Lacey also discovers that Phoebe may hold the key to unlocking new clues about Regina's mysterious past.

ABC Family Airing A TWISTED Recap Special Tonight

"Twisted" mystery fans, grab your notebooks! On Tuesday, August 20 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, ABC Family will air a special recap episode of TWISTED narrated by Ashton Moio, who plays Rico, Jo’s best friend and partner in crime-solving on the show.

The episode, entitled TWISTED: SOCIO STUDIES 101, will take a look at the pivotal moments that changed the course of Regina’s murder investigation, and of friendships and romances both old and new. The recap takes us back to Danny Desai’s (Avan Jogia) first day back in Green Grove after spending five years in juvenile detention for the mysterious murder of his aunt.

The final national Nielsen ratings are in for Tuessday, August 13, 2013. At 8 o'clock, PRETTY LITTLE LIARS stood as Tuesday's #1 TV telecast for the 3rd consecutive week in Women 18-34 (906,000/2.7 rating) and for the 8th time in 10 weeks in Females 12-34 (1.45 million/3.2 rating). Moreover, it was the #1 cable TV telecast for the 4th consecutive week in Women 18-49 (1.11 million/1.7 rating) and TV's #1 telecast for the 10th week running in Female Teens (547,000/4.7 rating).

TWISTED "Poison of Interest" Preview; Twitter Chat With John DeLuca

John DeLuca, who guest stars as Danny's soccer teammate Cole Farrell on TWISTED, will participate in a live chat with fans via Twitter during the East Coast broadcast of the show on Tuesday, August 13th, from 9-10 p.m. ET/6-7 p.m. PT.

At 8 p.m. ET/PT, PRETTY LITTLE LIARS ranked as Tuesday's #1 TV telecast for the 2nd consecutive week in Women 18-34 (862,000/2.5 rating) and for the 8th time in 9 weeks in Females 12-34 (1.60 million/3.5 rating). In addition, it was the #1 cable TV telecast for the 3rd consecutive week in Women 18-49 (1.10 million/1.7 rating) and TV's #1 telecast for the 9th week in a row in Female Teens (736,000/6.3 rating).

The Desai family’s connection to Regina threatens to complicate things between the friends, and Jo stumbles upon a shocking secret about Lacey’s family on a new episode of TWISTED, airing Tuesday, August 6th, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC Family.

In the episode titled "The Truth Will Out," when a major development in the murder investigation threatens to send Danny away from Green Grove for good, Danny and Kyle find a reason to work together and Jo and Lacey contemplate whether to reveal a major piece of evidence. At 8 o'clock, PRETTY LITTLE LIARS stood as Tuesday's #1 TV telecast for the 7th time in 8 weeks in Females 12-34 (1.43 million/3.1 rating), the #1 TV telecast for the 8th consecutive week in Female Teens (517,000/4.4 rating), and was the #1 cable TV telecast for the 2nd straight week in Women 18-49 (1.16 million/1.8 rating).

ABC Family Announces the Third Season of SWITCHED AT BIRTH, Gives Back-Order Pick-Ups to THE FOSTERS & TWISTED

ABC Family, the Millennial-skewing network, continues its forward momentum. The network has ordered a third season of its Peabody Award winning drama, SWITCHED AT BIRTH, and has given back-order pick-ups to the critically acclaimed and successful summer hits, THE FOSTERS, and TWISTED, it was announced today by Michael Riley, President ABC Family. The series will premiere alongside PRETTY LITTLE LIARS in January 2014.

Danny finds himself besieged by a group of masked pranksters and feels increasingly alone as the town of Green Grove continues to vilify him. Tyler asks to interview Danny for his new documentary about the town’s reaction to Danny’s return. In an effort to fit in, Danny decides to throw a party with Tyler’s help, in exchange for the interview, but things do not go smoothly.
