Steve Elmore Dead at 84

Former Broadway star and soap opera actor Steve Elmore has died at age 84 in Boynton Beach, Florida, according to his wife, Carolyn Marcell Elmore. No cause of death was reported.

Born in Niangua, Missouri, Elmore appeared on Broadway nine times, taking on roles as sea captains, cops, lawyers, and once—as a cowboy. He appeared in the ensemble of the Mary Martin musical "Jennie" in 1963, and in the Carol Burnett musical "Fade Out—Fade In" in 1964. He began his rise in 1969 after playing Hennessy/The Captain in the original Off-Broadway company of "Dames at Sea" opposite Bernadette Peters.

In 1970, he originated the role of Paul in the 1970 Stephen Sondheim-George Furth musical "Company. The character Paul is the soon-to-be (or not-so-soon-to-"be) bridegroom of the hyper-nervous Amy; the two sing in the memorable three-part patter song "(Not) Getting Married Today."

After "Company," Elmore worked in TV—mainly in soap operas, dramas, and commercials—and often returned to the stage. He assumed the lead role of lawyer Billy Flynn from Jerry Orbach during the original run of "Chicago," and again stepped into Orbach’s shoes in the role of director Julian Marsh during the original production of "42nd Street." "Chicago" director Bob Fosse also chose Elmore to appear in the ensemble of his 1979 film musical "All That Jazz."

Elmore played Peter Willis in NBC's short-lived daytime soap opera How to Survive a Marriage. The cutting edge soap was created by Anne Howard Bailey, and premiered with a special ninety-minute premiere on January 7, 1974.  When Elmore left to show later that same year, he was replaced by Berkeley Harris, who was married to daytime legend Beverlee McKinsey.

He also had a busy New York nightclub career, appearing regularly at the St. Regis Hotel’s King Cole Room with leading ladies Patrice Munsel, Marni Nixon, and Martha Wright. Lyricist E. Y. Harburg (“Over the Rainbow”) especially admired his respect for the words of songs, and dubbed him “the lyricist’s guardian angel,” says his wife.

His final Broadway appearance came in April 1993 in a two-performance concert celebration of "Company" that reunited the original cast.

In addition to his wife, Elmore is survived by his son, Stuart Elmore; two daughters, Stephana Sherwood and Susan Elmore; his daughter-in-law, Michele Burdette Elmore; and four grandchildren.

A private memorial is planned for New York City in January.

Below, watch Beth Howland with Steve Elmore, Teri Ralston and cast sing "Getting Married Today" from the original broadway cast of Sondheim's "Company" in 1970.

'Guiding Light' Emmy Winner Ellen Parker to Star in "20th Century Blues"

Guiding Light alum Ellen Parker, who won an Emmy for her portrayal of Maureen Bauer on the iconic soap opera, is set to star in "20th Century Blues," the new play by Indie Series Award winner Susan Miller that is making its New York premiere in November. The 10-week limited engagement will begin November 12.

Directed by Tony nominee Emily Mann, "20th Century Blues" is described as follows:

A Ted Talk. A photo shoot. A test of friendship. And a bond that connects four women who meet once a year to have their pictures taken in a ritual that chronicles their changing (and aging) selves as they navigate through love, careers, children, and the complications of history. But, when these private photographs have the potential to go public, relationships are strained, forcing the women to confront who they are, what they’ve become, and how they’ll deal with whatever lies ahead. From the author of My Left Breast, Susan Miller’s 20th Century Blues is the sharply funny and evocative new play that questions our place in the world and with one another.

Also starring are Beth Dixon (The Good Wife), Helen Hayes Award winner Franchelle Stewart Dorn (‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore), Emmy nominee Polly Draper (thirtysomething), two-time Obie winner Kathryn Grody (Top Girls) and Charles Socarides (Sons of the Prophet).

Performances are scheduled through January 28, 2018. Tickets are available at 20thcenturyblues.com.

'Full Circle'...Fully Packed! Philece Sampler, Nancy Lee Grahn, Alex Wyse and More Attend West Coast Premiere!

Nelson Aspen performed for a full house at the West Coast premiere of "Full Circle."

I'm happy to report that the West Coast premiere of my cabaret show, "Full Circle," packed 'em in at Bar Fedora in Downtown Los Angeles last weekend. It's always fun to share my showbiz shenanigans through story and song, but I had an especially love-filled room in this beautiful venue...with a strong connection to my personal history in the soap genre.

While my special guest star, Deven Green, has her own ties to the soap world thanks to her enormously popular "Welcome to My Home" parody videos, a few familiar faces were spotted in the audience and even participated in the performance merry making.

My friend of 30 years, Philece Sampler (Rituals, Days of our Lives, Another World) turned up and joined me for a rendition of the 1980s "Another World" theme song, earning a cheer from the crowd at the suggestion that her character Renee DuMonde (DiMera) make a return to Salem on Days of our Lives.
