Stephen Nichols Leaving 'Days of our Lives' as Steve Johnson

Stephen Nichols has been a favorite of Days of our Lives fans since he first appeared as Steve "Patch" Johnson in 1985, and many fans rooted for his return during the times he was off the canvas. Viewers are about to have enter another Patch-less period in Salem as the actor is leaving the NBC soap opera once again.

In a new Instagram post, Nichols says, “Days of Our Lives is home and I want to be there,” but he indicates that the current writing regime let him (as well as Patch/Kayla fans) down.

“I’ve been in this business long enough to understand the rotation of stories, and I get that we can’t always be at the forefront,” writes the veteran actor, “and despite my disappointment in the lack of story this past year, I’ve always worked hard and we’ve always tried to find the moments in whatever we’ve been given. I think we did that.”

Nichols goes on to hint that although he has parted ways with Days and is reportedly set to last appear on-screen in September, he is open to again sporting an eye patch, under the right circumstances.

“I know that there are still years of Steve and Kayla’s story left to be told,” he writes. “I hope we get to tell that story.”

For me, Days of Our Lives is home and I want to be there … I love the people, I love Steven Earl Johnson and I love what Mary Beth and I have been able to create together. I was excited to see what this new team would bring for us and for all of Salem. I’ve been in this business long enough to understand the rotation of stories, and I get that we can’t always be at the forefront. And despite my disappointment in the lack of story this past year, I’ve always worked hard and we’ve always tried to find the moments in whatever we’ve been given. I think we did that. Whenever I see a scene or montage you guys post, I am so touched and I remember just how much story we told for so many years and how rich it was. I’m so grateful for that. And I know that there are still years of Steve and Kayla’s story left to be told. I hope we get to tell that story. Your unwavering support tells me you hope that too. Thank you and much love, Stephen #Days @marybeth.evans #patchandkaylaforever

Nichols has been a wonderful ambassador for Days so it's sad to see him go. If NBC canceled the soap tomorrow, hiring him back would be a top priority as the iconic series came to a close. But like many a casting decision before, production companies don't always give fans what they want until it's too late. History will determine how this move is looked upon down the road.

Stephen Nichols & Mary Beth Evans Preview Steve & Kayla's 'Days of our Lives' Wedding

Stephen Nichols and Mary Beth Evans play Steve and Kayla Brady on Days
of our Lives
.
When Mary Beth Evans first appeared on NBC soap opera Days of our Lives in May 1986, it didn't take long for fans to fall in love with the onscreen relationship between her Nurse Kayla Brady and bad boy Steve "Patch" Johnson, played by Stephen Nichols. The actors shared a natural chemistry in their scenes together, which helped Steve and Kayla go on to become one of the most popular couples in the show's storied history.

The 1988 wedding of Steven Earl Johnson and Kayla Caroline Brady helped Days reach the top spot in the Nielsen ratings for the first time in more than a decade, with fans glued to their TV sets as Kayla regained her ability to speak during the ceremony. That marriage turned out to be invalid (though not in the minds of many fans), and the couple made it official once again in 1990. Sadly, Steve was presumed dead shortly after the next wedding, and the couple remained apart for 16 years until he turned up alive in 2006. The couple divorced in 2012, and Kayla focused on her job as Chief of Staff at Salem University Hospital. When Steve returned to Salem in 2015, he was determined to win his "Sweetness" back, and has been a man on a mission ever since.

On February 15, Steve and Kayla recommit to each other in a Valentine's Day wedding ceremony in front of family and friends. We Love Soaps spoke with Stephen Nichols and Mary Beth Evans this week about the wedding, the history of their characters, and more. Read our interview below.

WE LOVE SOAPS:You may be making TV history with this week’s wedding. And it would only happen on a soap, where viewers see a couple get married, and then watch the same couple get married again 29 years later.
STEPHEN NICHOLS: That's amazing.
MARY BETH EVANS: Stephen and I have both been married for 31/32 years, and then this couple comes back around nearly 30 years later. It's pretty remarkable really.

WE LOVE SOAPS: And you guys look the same!
MARY BETH EVANS: Yeah, right!
STEPHEN NICHOLS: I've been look at photos from the '80s, and I beg to differ. [Laughs]

Is The Bold and the Beautiful casting Ivy's mother?
B&B sent out a casting notice for “Claire,” a recurring role for a, “strong, beautiful woman who is 50-60 — and must be Australian.” When asked over the summer about the possibility of casting her TV mother, Ashleigh Brewer (Ivy) quipped, “That would be great. We actually spoke of her yesterday on the show. We said that she was in Australia and doesn’t like getting on planes very much, so we’re going to have to figure out how to get her here. Maybe we can shoot a cruise or something?” The role is expected to begin taping in two weeks.

Mary Beth Evans and Stephen Nichols reveal all to Glamour about life on Days of our Lives
Nichols: "They originally wrote the role as recurring. [Steve was] someone that was going to come in and stir up a bunch of trouble for Bo. There was a dude at NBC at the time that said, 'Why don't we get a character like Falcon Eddie on Rich Man, Poor Man...a guy with a patch.' That's where the idea came from!"

Evans: "I hadn't really seen the show, and there was Stephen in his leather jacket with his scar and patch, and I was this goody-two shoes, and I'm thinking, 'This is weird.' [Laughs] But we had a great connection from the start!"

Bill and Susan Hayes pick their most romantic Salem moments

Her husband and Caleb’s father, FBI Deputy Director Clayton Haas — recently revealed as having an affair with an FBI recruit — is played by Mark Pellegrino.

Shonda Rhimes: Bill Cosby did not inspire this week's episode of Scandal
An acclaimed professor was found to have drugged and raped scores of women on Thursday's episode, but Cosby didn’t serve as inspiration. “I don’t need the Cosby scandal to inspire me to tell a story about rape,” says Rhimes. "As if that is the only instance in which rape is relevant. Somewhere in America, a woman is raped every two minutes. Every two minutes. Let’s not diminish or insult the stories of these survivors by suggesting that I could only decide to tell a story about rape because of a celebrity scandal.”

She’s tough, smart, and not above using her seductive appearance to get answers. Ilonzeh (who played Maya on GH) will begin appearing in Empire’s final eight episodes which will air in the spring on Fox once the series takes a break after their midseason cliffhanger.

Steve Kazee to recur on Nashville
The Tony- and Grammy-winning actor, singer and guitarist has joined Nashville in the recurring role of Riff. He will make his debut on the show in early 2016.

Ten years ago, Riff was a country music star at the top of his game: No. 1 hits, platinum albums and sold-out tours. At the Nashville season 3 key arttime, this good old boy from Arkansas enjoyed the thrills of fame – partying and women – and acquired a legion of loyal fans, captivated by his genuine sound and authentic storytelling. However, everything changed when Riff met Heidi, a Southern beauty with a budding musical career of her own. He fell head over boots in love and chose what none of his contemporaries was willing to do – leave it all behind – farm over fortune, the family over fame. Riff and Heidi would join the show’s leading music couple, Rayna (Connie Britton) and Deacon (Charles Esten).
