'Guiding Light' Star Sonia Satra Plays Gloria Steinem in 'American Playboy: The Hugh Hefner Story'

Sonia Satra plays Gloria Steinem in the 2017 miniseries American Playboy:
The Hugh Hefner Story, now available on Amazon Prime.
American Playboy: The Hugh Hefner Story premiered on Amazon Prime Video in April. The series tells the story of Playboy magazine's charismatic founder, Hugh Hefner, who set out to disrupt the status quo and created one of the most recognizable brands in history. Guiding Light alum Sonia Satra plays a familiar face from then and now.

The docuseries combines archival footage, pulling from thousands of hours from Hefner's personal archives; interviews with notable figures including Jesse Jackson, Gene Simmons and Bill Maher; and cinematic reenactments.

Satra, who starred as Lucy Cooper on Guiding Light and played Barbara Graham in One Life to Live, can be seen in a guest-starring role of Gloria Steinem.

Produced by the Emmy Award-winning Stephen David Entertainment and Alta Loma Entertainment, American Playboy begins in post-war America and takes us through the launch of Playboy magazine in 1953 and the next six decades of Hefner's life and career. As he built his empire, Hefner became both a social justice advocate and a target of the conservative movement while becoming an outspoken defender of civil rights, freedom of speech, gay rights and, of course, sexual freedom.

The series was the result of unprecedented access to thousands of hours of never-before-seen footage from both Hefner's and the Playboy archives and Hefner's personal scrapbooks, which number more than 2,900 and constitute a Guinness World Record. The 90-year-old Hefner was deeply involved in the development and production of American Playboy, imbuing the series with rich first-person accounts and never-before-told stories.

From 1993 to 1997, Sonia Satra starred as Lucy Cooper on the CBS daytime drama Guiding Light. Lucy eventually left Springfield behind after marrying Alan-Michael Spaulding (played by Rick Hearst, then Michael Dietz). After leaving Guiding Light, Satra guest-starred on Baywatch and played Barbara Graham on ABC's One Life to Live, and went on to appear in a number of movies and TV series including Hyacinth, Soldier of Fortune, Pride & Loyalty, The Drum Beats Twice, Redum and The Men Who Built America.

Today, the multi-talented Satra has added certified life coach, fitness instructor, and award-winning motivational speaker (she was president of the National Speakers Association – NYC!) to her list of accomplishments. She also recently co-hosted a new talk show, Healthy Lifestyle with Eraldo on WMCN-TV. She had fun getting some healthy cooking tips while interviewing Dina Deleasa-Gonsar, known as "The Dish it Girl."

We Love Soaps spoke with Satra about her journey, including the lessons learned from her time on soaps.

"Where I am today is absolutely a combination of everything that I've done, all sort of built on each other," she says. "In terms of acting, that's where I started to learn the whole mind-body thing. And the discipline of that life is completely applicable to having your own business. From a mindset perspective, and a mind-body perspective, and a work ethic perspective, it's all been really helpful."

NEWS: Jordan Clarke, Sonia Satra, John Stamos, Dusty Rhodes, Jerry Penacoli, Danielle Harold, 'Game of Thrones' Finale

Guiding Light alum Jordan Clarke enjoys being a handyman
Jordan Clarke lived a working actor’s dream, going from primetime bit player to beloved, award-winning star of Guiding Light, playing Billy Lewis for many years. He was also a part-time handyman. In his latest feature, BuzzFeed's David Kushner recounts his relationship with Clarke as a handyman over the past few decades.

"Fixing things had a tangibility that, after all these years reading lines, he craved. He savored the satisfaction of making a new cabinet and seeing it being used in someone’s home. There were no lights shining down, no directors giving him orders, no egotistical co-stars. There was just him, a hammer, and a problem to solve. 'As wonderful as acting is,' he told me, 'this is more satisfying.'"
