NEWS: Kim Matula, Mal Young, Rhonda Ross, Sean Kanan, Tom Degnan

The Bold and the Beautiful alum Kim Matula savors every salacious minute on UnREAL
“As an actor, I’m not incredibly pleased with the popularity of reality shows,” says Matula, who’s most widely known for her five-year run as Hope Logan on B&B. “As an actor, I want there to be lots of scripted shows — and I want them to be really well-written scripted shows.”

“When I got the audition notice for this show, I watched the first episode and got hooked,” she says. “I just loved it so much that I went and downloaded the entire first season before auditioning."

Local South Dakota would-be stars audition for soap opera roles
Several dozen people went to the Rushmore Mall on Friday afternoon to audition for a walk-on role in one of two CBS soap operas: The Young and the Restless or The Bold and the Beautiful.

KELOLand, the local CBS affiliate, coordinated the casting call as part of regional auditions held throughout July. The local casting committee will select 10 finalists from each region. The national network will select the winners.

New The Young and the Restless executive producer Mal Young loves a vocal audience
“If they weren’t vocal, I would worry, because their opinions count," Young said in the new issue of Soap Opera Digest. "I love that. I encourage that, but then you have to surprise them. You can’t just keep saying, ‘Let’s give them what they want. ‘ We’ve got to give them what surprises them and thrills them.”

How Mal Young got sucked into Y&R
When the pilots he developed with Simon Fuller failed to be picked up, Young found himself approached by Sony to take a look at Y&R. “I was honored to be asked my opinion,” he tells CBS Soaps in Depth. “But also, when I really started to watch it, the quality shone through. I was just sucked into it. To be passionate and be part of the people involved in keeping this thing going, I love it.”

Red Rock coming to BBC1's afternoon lineup
The drama is told from the point of view of the officers from the local Garda station where the men and women there police the surrounding area. This program was originally shown in Ireland in 2015. It is being shown here in double length episodes each weekday afternoon.

Motown progeny (and Another World alum) Rhonda Ross makes her own music
Ross (Toni Burrell on AW) is enjoying spending time, professionally and personally, with her mother, Diana Ross.

“We are working together in a way we never have before,” says Ross, who appears on her mom’s “In the Name of Love Tour,” in the Bay Area this week.

The Bold and the Beautiful star Sean Kanan announces new comedy gigs
Kanan (Deacon Sharpe on B&B) will be taking his stand up comedy act to the Lake Tahoe/Reno/Auburn CA area next week, and the actor/comedian couldn’t be more thrilled. “My routine is getting stronger and stronger,” he beams. “I’m doing more and more material, and working towards filming a half-hour special, hopefully before the end of the year.”

EastEnders character's life is set to be left hanging in the balance (spoilers)
The drama begins when the Beales and Mitchells receive a call to say Ben (Harry Reid) has been involved in a mystery incident, and has been rushed to hospital with critical injuries. Desperate to find out what’s happened, Phil and Ian panic and make their way to hospital - but what news awaits them? These scenes air on Monday, July 18.

Tom Degnan marries Erin Cummings
Tom Degnan (Joey Buchanan on One Life to Live) married actress Erin Cummings over the Fourth of July weekend at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at The University of Notre Dame. The couple was introduced by Christian Campbell (Bobby on All My Children) and his wife, America Olivo.

NEWS: Kimberly McCullough, Sean Kanan, Sian Blake, Daytime Diversity

Kimberly McCullough
General Hospital star Kimberly McCullough writes revealing year end blog, including having a brain cyst and losing a baby at 22 weeks
"My heart was so full and then it broke," wrote McCullough (Robin on GH). "I had lost my baby girl. It was too much. I didn’t need to learn this lesson. I wasn’t interested. But I wasn’t in control. These things happen and no, I don’t believe they happen 'for a reason.' I’m still processing, still healing, but anyone who has gone through it knows, losing a baby at 22 weeks is tragic. One thing I am proud of however was that I allowed myself to be happy and to relish the moment. I sat in all that goodness and I can recall those feelings (when I’m having different ones) and hope that it can be like that again."

The Bold and the Beautiful's Sean Kanan is youth ambassador for anti-bullying program
Kanan (Deacon on B&B) was asked to serve as a youth ambassador to Boo2Bullying by the program's director. The Bold and the Beautiful star was more than happy to fill the role. He visited Palm Springs High School in October to discuss his own experiences being bullied in his childhood. Sean told CBS Soaps In-Depth that anti-bullying “has been a passion of mine for a long-time."

Missing EastEnders star Sian Blake 'feared she would die from motor neurone disease'
Sian Blake, who played homewrecker Frankie Pierre in the BBC One soap opera in the 1990s, has not been seen since Sunday December 13. It has been reported the 43-year-old is suffering from motor neurone disease and that she began fearing it was getting worse. A neighbor of the mother-of-two, who lives in Erith, Kent, said ambulances had been seen outside the home in recent weeks on a number of occasions. Sandra Metzgen told The Sun: "No one knows where she is."

TV Insider's Michael Logan grades diversity in daytime soap operas
There continued to be a lack of diversity behind the camera in daytime soap operas in 2015, but Logan seemed impressed by some of show's diversity in front of the camera. The Bold and the Beautiful was rated an A, General Hospital was graded a B+, Days of our Lives was given a C+, and The Young and the Restless rated a C.

NEWS: Eric Braeden, Bryan Dattilo, Sean Kanan, Cady McClain, Melissa Archer, Andrew Trischitta

Eric Braeden
The Young and the Restless star Eric Braeden attends Carolina Panthers game, shares opinions on storytelling, getting older, egotistical actors
Below are a few quotes from Braeden's (Victor Newman on Y&R) interview with the Charlotte Observer:

“Our show was more successful than others over the last 29 years because we have tried to make it as real as possible. I hate this phantasmagoric bull----. Life is so interesting. Real-life is so interesting. My God. Just ask a person about their lives, and you say, ‘Whoa.’ So why come up with all these bull---- storylines?”

“I don’t give a s--- about getting older. I really don’t. I feel (great). And that’s why working out is so important. That’s why this is still important: boom-boom-boom. (Braeden throws three quick jabs as he talks). ... I’m 74, I’m proud of it – very proud of it – and will compete along a lot of lines with a lot of people. The only pain in the a-- about getting older is your hips. I have one resurfaced hip.”

“I have met so many actors over the years who’ve said, ‘Without me, this show would be nothing.’ ... And where are they now? Don’t ever assume that without you, the show will go down the drain. Bull----. It doesn’t. Are you kidding? ‘Oh, this can’t be done without so-and-so playing the part. Then they leave and we say, ‘Well, not quite the same, but oh well.’ ”

FOX and Lee Daniels Are Working on Making an Empire Spinoff a Reality
FOX TV Group co-chief Dana Walden tells Vulture that discussions have begun about exactly how to make it happen, explaining that the seeds for the new show could be planted by early next year via one or more episodes of Empire. “If there’s a character … that feels original enough, has enough momentum and enough of a storytelling engine, we will definitely look to spin Empire off for next season,” she said. Said character, Walden added, “would, in all likelihood, appear in the second half of this season.”

NEWS: Sean Kanan, Angell Conwell, Redaric Williams, Scott McKinsey, AfterEllen Hot 100, 'Anyone But Me'

Sean Kanan
The Bold and the Beautiful star Sean Kanan visits The Podcastle podcast
On his loyal fans: "I've been on four different soap operas, and they always find me. I act for me, but without the fans I would probably be doing a one-man show in somebody's loft."

On the B&B production schedule: "We have 28 production weeks, and we do 8 shows a week. There's only 5 days in the production week, so we're banking 3 shows a week."

On what it's like being a soap star: "Being on a soap opera is a lot like being a WWF star. You become very famous within a very specific microcosm."

The Young and the Restless alums Angell Conwell and Redaric Williams writing together
"I’m in the process of writing and producing as we speak. I feel it’s a natural part of evolving as an actor. I’m writing a project now with my former Young and The Restless co-star Redaric Williams." Hollywood is a town where actors are constantly concerned about the next audition, the next role, and the next opportunity. Conwell remains grounded by not allowing herself to look too far ahead, "I just [want] to see myself getting better with every day."

Scott McKinsey is now directing at Days of our Lives
McKinsey won six Daytime Emmys for his directing work at General Hospital over the past two decades. He will continue working on both soaps.

2015 AfterEllen Hot 100 list revealed
Scandal star Kerry Washington kicks off the list at No. 100. Former As the World Turns star Julianne comes in at No. 87. Elsewhere on the list, The Fosters' Sherri Saum is No. 82, while Guiding Light alum Crystal Chappell is No. 57.

Award-winning web series Anyone But Me returns today with "Lost Scenes"
The series, from Susan Miller and Tina Cesa Ward, aired its series finale in 2012. Anyone But Me is tied with the most Indie Series Awards wins of all-time.

Executive Producer Gareth Phillips previews what's head on Irish soap opera Red Rock
With a huge body of work in the UK including dramas such as Coronation Street, Hollyoaks and Cold Blood, Phillips came to Ireland initially to work on Fair City as a consultant. Then Red Rock came knocking.
"We are really building on the foundations that have been put in place earlier in the year. It’s important to remember that a lot of episodes going on the screen were actually shot some time ago – I think all our episodes up to Christmas and New Year have been shot. What I think is right at the heart of Red Rock will be seen again in the new season – that you never know what is going to happen and we are not afraid to take very big risks. We want the audience to feel like the show is a thrill ride. The show is a police procedural drama at heart after all so we want it so that the audience can never predict what is going to happen next."
