Morgan Fairchild Leads All-Star Lineup for 'Mélange'

Morgan Fairchild has been tapped to play the vindictive Vivian King in the new serialized half hour drama, Mélange. Using NYC as its backdrop, the show will center round the fight of ownership for a historic gay bar, Mélange, after its proprietor has suddenly and mysteriously died. The series will emulate the grand storytelling flair of 80’s primetime decadent dramas that pitted good vs. evil but in a contemporary, fast-paced style; exploring modern themes of sexuality, immigration, addiction, power, and inclusion. The ensemble cast of 17, lead by Morgan Fairchild, includes a roster of talent from television, Broadway, reality, and social media. Shooting for Mélange kicked off August 4th in New York City.

Scott Evans (One Life to Live) stars as Ryann Parker, the strikingly handsome young man whose once Utopian workplace has become infested with betrayal, corruption, and revenge. He fights to keep Mélange out of the claws of Vivian and into the hands of the employees and patrons who genuinely love the historic bar.

Through flashbacks and archival footage, Robert Newman (Guiding Light, Santa Barbra, General Hospital) plays Syd Winchester, the deceased patriarch of Mélange who, in life, was a pioneer and hero of the gay rights movement. Rounding out the ensemble cast: Emmy winner Darnell Williams (All My Children, The Young and the Restless, Loving ), Emmy winner Kristen Alderson (One Life to Live, General Hospital,), Ilene Kristen (One Life to Live, Ryan’s Hope, General Hospital), David A. Gregory (One Life to Live), Jessica Leccia (Guiding Light, One Life to Live, Venice The Series), Diana DeGarmo (The Young and the Restless, American Idol) ), gossip blogger Perez Hilton (Bold and the Beautiful), Anne Ramsay (Mad About You,The L Word), Alex Newell (Glee, Broadway’s Once On This Island), Mark Indelicato (Ugly Betty, Dead of Summer ), Laith Ashley (Strut), Maya Days (Damages, Broadway’s Aida), Omar Sharif Jr., Pamela Winslow Kashani (Star Trek: The Next Generation).

Mélange was created and is being executive produced by multi-award winning theatrical producer and political activist Tom D’Angora. It is being directed by Emmy Award winner Gary Donatelli (One Life to Live) and Tony Award winning producer Tim Kashani.

Kim Zimmer & Robert Newman Reunite for "The Lion in Winter"

It was 33 years ago today that Guiding Light diva Reva Shayne Lewis declared herself "The Slut of Springfield" to true love, Joshua Lewis. Reva and Josh were played brilliantly for decades by Kim Zimmer and Robert Newman, who have reunited to play Queen Eleanor and King Henry II in a new production of "The Lion in Winter." The photo above is from a dress rehearsal on July 24.

In "The Lion in Winter," as the sun sets on his reign, the great and powerful Henry Plantagenet (Newman) calls his wife Eleanor (Kim Zimmer) to the castle at Chinon for Winter Court, along with their three sons – the warrior Richard (Jamey Grisham), and the bumble-headed John (William Dunn), and the conniving Geoffrey (first year apprentice Jabri Johnson). Eleanor has been imprisoned by her husband since 1173 and uses every moment she can to ensure Richard to be the successor to Henry. The key to the throne is to marry Alais, King Henry’s mistress (Audrey Morton), who is promised by her brother, King Philip of France (Quinn Moran), to Richard. Locked behind the palace doors, a deadly game of alliances and betrayals unfolds as each player moves to control who will sit on the throne when Henry is gone. Goldman has combined keen historical and psychological insights with delicious, acid wit to create a modern theatrical masterpiece.

The show is directed by Hans Friedrichs and produced by Brendan Ragotzy.

"The Lion in Winter" runs through August 6th at The Barn Theatre in Augusta Michigan.

Daytime Alums Robert Newman and Yvonne Perry Star in 'Naked Influence' at Capital Repertory Theatre

Suzanne Bradbeer’s "Naked Influence," a new play about a woman’s singular journey, makes its world premiere at Capital Repertory Theatre, January 22-February 14. Two daytime drama alums will star: Guiding Light's Robert Newman and As the World Turns' Yvonne Perry.

In "Naked Influence," Lucy (played by Amanda Sykes) likes the money she makes as a stripper, as well as the command over her customers, the governmental sway of her hips. But she also likes her new beau, a handsome young D.C. cop who doesn’t know about her craft, hell, her calling. And she likes the idea of finally pursuing the English degree that whispered in her ear even before she began twirling the pole for tips. But when Dennis (Newman), a Washington power broker, steps into the club and walks into her life, everything changes.

Perry returns to theREP as Angie, the bar manager, housemom and former dancer who looks out for Lucy and keeps tabs on her regulars.

"Naked Influence," set, in large part, in an upscale gentleman’s club, shares with its forebear a unique tension, crisp dialogue and a keen eye for today’s social climate.

“This play puts polarizing forces together,” says theREP’s Producing Artistic Director Maggie Mancinelli-Cahill, who is also directing the show. “Lucy and Dennis both feel they have control of their lives, but their behavior, reckless to some eyes, puts them on a collision course with reality that is great theatre and food for thought."

NEWS: Cady McClain, Kim Zimmer, Robert Newman, Billy Flynn, Renée Elise Goldsberry, June Brown, Maitland Ward, Teddy Sears

Cady McClain meets with Queens of Drama about joining Season 2 cast
Said McClain, who most recently played Kelly Andrews on The Young and the Restless: "So I just had a meeting with the folks from @QueensofDrama. I thought they were really cool people, and I enjoyed talking about their show and what I might have to offer. No matter what happens, I really hope that the women are successful in making their created show a hit. I think that would be so great for them and for all of daytime. I guess I always root for the underdog and I probably always will."

Days of our Lives star Billy Flynn is engaged
Billy Flynn (Chad DiMera on Days of our Lives) reveals that he popped the question to actress Gina Comparetto on his birthday on May 29 — and she said yes! “I haven’t talked about it on social media,” the actor tells Digest. "Our families and friends have known.” Flynn began dating Comparetto in early 2014; a wedding date has not yet been set. Congratulations to the happy couple!

Review: Former Guiding Light co-stars Kim Zimmer and Robert Newman shine in Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera's 'Gypsy'
"It's not just a gimmick to stoke box-office interest. Their long history of working together allows Newman and Zimmer to play well off each other. Newman's Herbie is Rose's laid-back aider and abettor. He's good humored and warm until pushed past endurance. Zimmer is dynamic and energized throughout this three-hour musical, never letting go of her objective from her opening number 'Some People' to the emotional 'Rose's Turn' that is the show's true finale."

Actresses in ‘Hamilton’ Take a Trip to a Family Home for a History Lesson
The visitors were the three actresses who play the Schuyler sisters in “Hamilton,” the musical that opens in previews on Broadway on Monday. It tells the story of the nation’s founding with a particular emphasis on Alexander Hamilton, who was, among other things, the nation’s first treasury secretary.

“This is like a soap opera,” said former One Life to Live actress Renée Elise Goldsberry, who plays Angelica Schuyler Church. “Believe me. I was on one.”

So was the day's guide, Patricia Sanftner Sanftner, behind the scenes.

It was One Life to Live, and Sanftner worked in the wardrobe department in the 1990s.

Former One Life to Live actor Teddy Sears joins The Flash
Sears has been cast as Jay Garrick, who is well known to comic book fans as the first DC Comics character to take on the mantle of The Flash. In the TV show, Jay is a mysterious figure who arrives in Central City to warn Barry Allen and his team at S.T.A.R. Labs of an impending danger that he alone cannot hope to stop.

Former The Bold and the Beautiful actress Maitland Ward wears nothing but green body paint as she strips naked for Star Trek costume at Comic-Con
On her Instagram page she describes herself as a 'Cosplay Queen' - the practice of dressing up as a character from a movie, book or video game, particularly one from the Japanese genres of manga and anime.

EastEnders' June Brown refuses to go part time insisting "I'll play Dot till I’m in my 90s!"
"The producers are very conscious of the demands of the schedule, and quietly suggested they could limit the amount of time she needs to spend on set. June has just come back from a break after the very demanding murder trial storyline which saw her take center stage for hours of television, but she's as raring to go as ever."

NEWS: 'Twin Peaks' Delayed, Finola Hughes, Kim Zimmer, Robert Newman, 'Urban Cowboy'

Twin Peaks reboot pushed to 2017, co-creator Mark Frost says
The revival, announced by Showtime in October, was originally slated for a 2016 premiere.

“A lot of people always look back at Twin Peaks and say that was the start of this explosion we’ve had in good television drama, but we did it in a time when there were still only three networks,” said Frost. “The challenge for us is to try and come back and raise the bar above what we did the last time. We’re coming back with season three of Twin Peaks after a 25-year absence. We’ve finished the scripts, we start production in September, and that will be coming out on Showtime sometime in 2017.”

Finola Hughes returning to General Hospital earlier than expected?
Soap Opera Digest is hearing that Finola Hughes (Anna), who's been on hiatus from GH, will be back sooner than expected; Anna's sojourn to Ireland was slated to last until Hughes returned in September.

Guiding Light actors Kim Zimmer and Robert Newman reunite in Pittsburgh CLO's 'Gypsy'
For a long time, neither Zimmer nor Newman knew the other was interested in or was being considered for the CLO production.

“We were both in the dark,” Newman says. “By the time she signed on, I knew they were approaching her.”

Though they are doing this show together for the first time, it's not the first time they have appeared on stage together.

Earlier this year, they performed the lead roles in the musical “Curtains” at Papermill Playhouse in Millburn, N.J., along with Amanda Rose, who will play the grown-up Louise in “Gypsy.”

In mid-May, Zimmer and Newman were part of the ensemble for “Putting It Together,” a revue of Sondheim songs in a joint production of the Delaware Theatre Company and the Delaware Symphony Orchestra in Wilmington.

FOX orders Urban Cowboy pilot
Paramount TV and 20th Century Fox Television will co-produce. In a statement, legendary producer Robert Evans said, "In the 35 years since I made the original Urban Cowboy, country music and the influence of Texas has gone stratospheric. The timing could not be better to continue this story in the television world... And what an ace team of collaborators we have on board to make it happen."

Luther creator Neil Cross to revive 1970s sci-fi series Sapphire & Steel
“I’m planning to — it looks like I’m going to — relaunch Sapphire & Steel,” Cross told the Nerdist Writers’ Panel podcast. He added that it was “a late ’70s science fiction horror show, which had incredibly low budgets, so every single episode was a bottle episode where the enemy is time itself. So it would tell ghost stories and monster stories but in every episode somehow time was the villain.” Cross, who has also written for MI-5 and Doctor Who, described the lead characters as “proto Mulder and Scully.”

The Cosby Show, The Dukes of Hazzard and the Ethics of Reruns
"If you believe that pop culture matters, then it matters even when it’s uncomfortable (and sometimes for the very reasons it’s uncomfortable). The Cosby Show is a legitimate piece of American history. It advanced the representation of black families and culture on TV and–however ugly the irony now–showed a generation of kids an African American dad as a wise, successful father figure."

Following rumors that the soap is in trouble, Shayne told The Sun: "Shows need refreshing. It's all about new characters. "If you're being charming and cheeky, like Aidan, then people will like you. He has great family values. We're similar in that he's grown up on an estate and is half-Irish."

Created by the Wachowskis along with Babylon 5’s J. Michael Straczynski, Sense8 is a gargantuan feat of both creativity and capitalism: Its narrative spans eight cities and its production budget permitted travel to all of them.

Mexican soap operas build cultural bridge with China
Peruvian novelist Mario Vargas Llosa once said:" Culture has done for Latin America what politics and economics have failed to achieve: integration."

The cultural bridge that has connected the two regions via the small screen has been in place since at least the 1980s, following the production of The Rich Also Cry (Los ricos tambien lloran), a Mexican soap opera that was an enormous hit in China.

The Tony Awards Broadcast: Broadway’s Chance to Woo America
The annual Tony Awards broadcast is, of course, about honoring the best of a theatrical season. But there is more than one way to win the night: For producers, the real battle is over wooing ticket-buyers, and the broadcast’s musical numbers are seen as the single most important way to do that.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Catching Up With Ellen Wheeler As She Begins A New Project With Old Friends (Part 1 of 2)

Left to Right: Kurt McKinney, Frank Dicopoulos, Robert Newman,
Ellen Wheeler, Michael O'Leary and Jordan Clarke.
Former GUIDING LIGHT executive producer Ellen Wheeler began her career in Daytime as an actress. She landed the role of Marley Love on ANOTHER WORLD in 1984 and, a year later, she began playing Marley's twin, Victoria. Soon, she won an Emmy (for work in 1986).

She took on the role of Cindy Parker on ALL MY CHILDREN the next year, in what turned out to be one of the most moving HIV/AIDS stories ever told on television, and won another Emmy (for her work in 1988).

Primetime roles on DARK SHADOWS, HUNTER, STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE and ER followed. She guest-starred on THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL and returned to ANOTHER WORLD as Marley for its final year. That's when she first moved behind the camera and directed episodes of AS THE WORLD TURNS, earning three more Emmy nominations. Then, in 2004, Wheeler was named executive producer of GUIDING LIGHT.

Ranked last among the nine remaining daytime soap operas (at the time, in the key ratings demo) GUIDING LIGHT was only beating PASSIONS in total viewers. Forced to move to a new production model, with little time for the cast and crew to adjust (and no time at all for the audience), ratings dipped again in 2008, as the loss of fan favorites Beth Ehlers and Ricky Paul Goldin exacerbated the sense the show was, at times, physically jarring to watch.

Ironically, by the start of 2009 (CBS announced cancellation of the 72-year-old soap on April Fools Day) GUIDING LIGHT was back on solid footing. Some of the technical kinks had been worked out, Grant Aleksander returned as Phillip Spaulding and the Olivia and Natalia slow-burn love story garnered the show more buzz than it had received in years. Nevertheless, GUIDING LIGHT went off the air on September 18, 2009, with cast and crew moving on to other projects.

Wheeler and oher GL alums recently got together on a beautiful fall Sunday for a day of taping, talking and pizza. Dubbed "A New Project With Old Friends," it was a chance for much of the old gang to get back together, shoot some scenes and catch up. We Love Soaps recently spoke with Wheeler about this reunion, what she's been doing since GUIDING LIGHT and where it might go in the future.

NEWS: Hulu Accepting Final Bids; Robert Newman Explores Dark Side; MAD MEN The Soap; OWN-ing Up

Hulu Deadline for Final Bids Arrives: Keep an Eye on DirecTV
Hulu and its corporate parents are accepting final bids for the online video service on Friday, and according to several individuals close to the process the field has whittled down to three companies: Guggenheim Digital Media, Chernin Entertainment/AT&T and DirecTV.

But keep your eye on DirecTV.

Here's why: Chernin is bidding with AT&T, but the telecom giant is driving that bid, according to one knowledgeable individual. Hulu management is apparently wary of being owned by AT&T.

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow - In Honor Of SeptemBeard!

"Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow"
by Nelson Aspen

In honor of "SeptemBeard" --a witty celebration of facial hair intended to help raise awareness and donations in the fight against a leading killer of men, prostate cancer-- I am going razor-free for the next month.  I wrote a blog article about Hollywood's hottest hirsute heartthrobs (including Jake Gyllenhaal, Gerard Butler, Hugh Jackman...  You can read it here.) but I realized how woefully lacking the Daytime TV genre has always been in the Beard Department (that includes Talk & Game shows, too).  Does the female demographic the Sponsors covet really prefer baby-faced heroes with shiny, plucked chests and androgynous good looks?  Or might there be some viewers out there waiting to "Woof!" at the sight of some Au Naturel guys with some fuzz not only on their hands and feet, but right up there on their chiseled cheekbones or square cut jaw lines?

FLASHBACK: Reva and Josh 1989

WEDDING BELLS AHEAD ON 'GUIDING LIGHT'

By Jay Bobbin
Orlando Sentinel
July 10, 1989

Get ready for the wedding march and the throwing of rice: Reva and Josh are getting married, at long last.

Fans of the long-running CBS daytime soap GUIDING LIGHT which airs at 3 p.m. weekdays on WCPX-Channel 6 are in for a big payoff this week, as the characters of Reva Shayne (played by two-time Emmy- winner Kim Zimmer) and Joshua Lewis (Robert Newman) finally tie the knot in a ceremony that begins on Friday's episode and concludes the following Monday. As steady viewers of the show can testify, the couple certainly have weathered their share of trials and tribulations ever since they were high-school sweethearts. Reva not only married Josh's older brother, but also their father, and she later parented a child who recently was revealed to be Josh's as well. Meanwhile, Josh was paralyzed in a car accident and, later rehabilitated, he moved to Venezuela . . . only to return after an ill-fated marriage of his own to find Reva ready to marry yet another man, a plan that she subsequently abandoned.

YEARS: 1983-1984; 1986-1990; 1995-2009

STORY:
When Alan Spaulding wanted to cause trouble between Vanessa Chamberlain and Billy Lewis he tracked down Reva, Billy's ex-wife, and offered her money to come to Springfield to split them up.  Reva happily accepted the offer and came to town claiming her divorce from Billy wasn't valid.  Though she had married Billy years ago, his younger brother, Josh, was her true love.  Reva began having second thoughts and called off her deal with Alan. It wasn't long before Reva and Josh rekindled their relationship, but he found out she had been working for Alan and dumped her.  Josh and Billy's father, H.B., stepped in and married Reva.  When Josh found out, he was disgusted and recklessly crashed his car resulting in him becoming paralyzed.  Reva and H.B. took Josh in as he tried to recover.  One night at a country club party, Josh and Reva let their feelings boil over in a confrontation which ended with Reva declaring herself "The Slut of Springfield."

CLASSIC CLIP: GUIDING LIGHT 50th Anniversary Tribute at the 2002 Daytime Emmy Awards

At the Daytime Emmy Awards in 2002, GUIDING LIGHT's 50th television anniversary was celebrated. Kim Zimmer (Reva) and Robert Newman (Josh) introduced a nice clip package, then several current and former cast members were brought on stage with Ruby Dee (Martha) escorting to the front the original Bill Bauer, Lyle Sudrow, who played the role on the radio version of the show starting in 1948 joining the original TV cast in 1952.

While it may not be perfect, this is the type of tribute I expected this year for ALL MY CHILDREN and ONE LIFE TO LIVE at the Daytime Emmys. Granted, the Emmys aired on CBS in 2002 and the network had more incentive to celebrate one of its own shows. When GL was canceled the Emmys brought on Betty White to introduce a shorter clip package for the show followed by bringing cast members on stage. An unaired four-minute tribute clip was released on the internet after the ceremony.

Watch the 2002 Emmys clip below followed by the 2009 celebration of GUIDING LIGHT and this year's AMC/OLTL tribute:
