Primetime Emmy Awards Add Short Form Categories, Expand Number of Directing/Writing Nominees

Earlier this week, the Television Academy announced changes for the
68th Primetime Emmys, including new short form categories.
The Television Academy has expanded its short form categories for the 2016 Primetime Emmy Awards competition, saying it is embracing the proliferation of quality storytelling across both digital and traditional networks and platforms.

In expanding these categories, the Academy further acknowledges the dramatic growth of the work of Television Academy members and others in the production and distribution of short form programs (defined as program episodes averaging 15 minutes or less). Note: Most of the 56 nominated series for this year's Indie Series Awards would fall into this category, though some of the drama series (The Bay, Wintethorne, EastSiders, Anacostia) produce episodes longer than 15 minutes.

Bruce Rosenblum, Television Academy Chairman and CEO said, “Our industry is aggressively, quickly and creatively evolving the various ways episodic stories are told. Our Board of Governors felt that this expansion of short form categories begins the process of ensuring that Emmy-worthy creativity will be rewarded, irrespective of format or platform. These category changes reflect the broader opportunities that emerging networks and distribution platforms, such as Maker Studios, Fullscreen, AwesomenessTV, YouTube Red, Adult Swim and others, are seizing in choosing innovative formats that enable our television community to share stories in novel and entertaining ways.”

'How to Get Away with Murder' Emmy Winner Viola Davis: "At the End of the Day, People Want to Be Seen"

Viola Davis
How to Get Away with Murder star Viola Davis spoke with the New York Times about her historic Primetime Emmys win, including the importance of being scene. She acknowledged her awareness of the comments made by General Hospital's Nancy Lee Grahn but didn't have anything to say about that.

Q. What did you and Taraji P. Henson, a fellow nominee in the drama category, say to each other when you won?

A.
First of all, that was like the second or third time we hugged through the night. She said, “I love you,” and I said, “I love you more than anything in the world, I love you!” That’s what we said. I think at the end of the day, people want to be seen. And I think that’s why it was important for me and Taraji to acknowledge that in each other, to not just feel like it is competition, to just say, I see you, yes, I see you, too. I love you. I take you in.

Q. For you it is about inclusion.

A.
If there has been any backlash, it’s that all people want to feel included in a speech. I know there has been some backlash with an actress who didn’t feel she was included.

Q. You mean the soap opera actress (Nancy Lee Grahn, who argued on Twitter that Ms. Davis’s speech was misleading because she was part of an elite group of actresses who had never been held back by discrimination)?

A.
Yes. I don’t know that I want to say more about that.

'General Hospital' Star Nancy Lee Grahn Faces Twitter Backlash After Viola Davis Tweet

Nancy Lee Grahn is trending on Twitter after comments following Viola Davis' historic Emmy win.
General Hospital actress and woman's rights advocated Nancy Lee Grahn weighed in via Twitter on Viola Davis' historic Primetime Emmys win on Sunday night and faced immediate backlash. So much so, in fact, that "Nancy Lee Grahn" began trending, and still is on Monday morning.

In one of her initial comments about Davis' win, Grahan tweeted, "I think she's the bees knees but she's elite of TV performers. Brilliant as she is. She has never been discriminated against."

The two-time Emmy winning actress quickly offered a mea culpa but the discussion continued. Even Oscar winner Patricia Arquette weighed in.

Grahn's longer apology: "I apologize for my earlier tweets and now realize I need to check my own privilege. My intention was not to take this historic and important moment from Viola Davis or other women of color but I realize that my intention doesn't matter here because that is what I ended up doing. I learned a lot tonight and I admit that there are still some things I don't understand but I am trying to and will let this be a learning experience for me."

67th Primetime Emmy Awards: Complete List of Winners

Viola Davis
The winners of the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards were revealed in a ceremony hosted by Andy Samberg on Sunday night. Former Guiding Light and The West Wing actress won for the seventh time on Sunday, tying her with Ed Asner for the most performance Primetime Emmys in history.

Viola Davis also made history, becoming the first black actress to win the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama for her role as Annalise Keating on How to Get Away with Murder.

“In my dreams and visions, I seemed to see a line, and on the other side of that line were green fields, and lovely flowers, and beautiful white ladies, who stretched out their arms to me over the line, but I couldn’t reach them no-how,” Davis said, quoting Harriet Tubman in her acceptance speech. “Let me tell you something: the only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity. You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there.”

Check out the complete list of nominees and winners below:

"Game Of Thrones" (HBO) *WINNER

WMC 10-Year Emmy Study: Women Lacking in Writing, Directing, Producing, Editing Nominations

Click to expand the WMC infographic
In the past decade, women have received only 22 percent of the Primetime Emmy nominations for writing, directing, producing, and editing, according to an investigation by the Women’s Media Center.

Although the Emmys cover many different jobs related to creating television programs, the Women’s Media Center focused on the categories of writing (6), directing (8), editing (10), and producing (20). In its analysis of the nominations made for the years 2006 through 2015, WMC sought to take a detailed look at the gender ratios of jobs that have the most influence on what is depicted on the small screen.

Out of all the nominees nominated in 44 writing, directing, editing, and producing categories over the past decade, 2,074 of them were women, representing only 22 percent of the total. There were 7,485 men nominated, 78 percent of the total.

For the 67th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards — which will air on Sunday — women make up only 25 percent of the writing, directing, producing, and editing nominations.

Julie Burton, President of the Women’s Media Center, noted, “These are key behind-the-scenes roles, and the men and women in these roles have the power to decide and mold what the story is, who is in the story, and how the story is told. This is crucial to making sure women’s experiences, perspectives, voices, and images are part of any story. Clearly there is a connection between the broadcast, network, cable, and Netflix programs that hire exclusively male creators and the industry-wide gender divide. When there are few jobs for women, it is easy to see why so few women in non-acting categories are recognized for their excellence.”

John Gabriel is still performing.  He starred as Seneca Beaulac
for years on ABC daytime soap opera Ryan's Hope.
84-year-old Ryan's Hope star John Gabriel makes his Los Angeles concert debut
Ryan's Hope alum John Gabriel (Seneca Beaulac) recently made his Los Angeles concert debut in "An Evening with John Gabriel."

"They just don't make John Gabriel's anymore!," said Michael Sterling. That sentiment couldn't have been more clearly understood than by the full house at Sterling's on July 6th when the 84 year young star rapturously treated the full house to a string of classic American music. "Perfection personified," declared Sterling. "A true crooner... a wonderful actor and a great gentleman.... oozing with style that just can't be taught. He's the type of performer that young singers should aspire to be." Gabriel regaled his fans and friends with favorites like 'When Sunny Gets Blue', 'That's Life', a medley of 'Nice Work if You Can Get It' and 'Hooray for Love', and sentimental, ballads like 'Good Morning Heartache', and 'Nature Boy'. Warner Bros. bids for control of Korean soap opera site DramaFever
Time Warner Inc.’s Warner Bros. studio is among bidders for a majority stake in the online video company DramaFever, according to people familiar with the matter, less than a year after Japan’s SoftBank Group Corp. bought it for $100 million.

Founded in 2009, DramaFever is best known as the place where young people – especially teenaged girls – go to get their dose of subtitled Korean soap operas and other TV shows and movies from around the world. The Hulu-like model includes both a free, ad-supported tier and premium subscription service. In the year leading up to its 2014 sale, it turned heads in the industry with its explosive growth, more than doubling its traffic to 2 million unique visitors per month.

Primetime Emmy nominations set record with 64% gain for African-American actors
The Primetime Emmys showed substantial progress this year in recognizing African-American thesps, who received 18 nominations across all acting categories — easily eclipsing last year’s record high of 11 noms. Hulu explores adding ad-free option to its service

Empire's Lee Daniels Now Says F-Bomb To TV Academy Was Joke: “I Love The Emmys”
The executive producer went back online Thursday to apparently clarify his remarks in a much calmer fashion. Daniels says he “loves the Emmys” and has nothing but good wishes for the nominations that his show received and others.

Josh Hopkins joins Quantico as series regular
Hopkins will play Special Agent Liam O’Connor, taking over the role played by Dougray Scott in the pilot.

Natalie Alyn Lind joins Gotham as Silver St. Cloud
Silver St. Cloud is described as an ethereal beauty with the pristine manners of a Gotham debutante. Add in the fact that she lost her parents at a young age, and it’s understandable why she and Bruce end up drawn to each other.

And as Bruce’s friend — and love interest — Silver introduces Bruce to her uncle Theo Galavan, who just so happens to be a billionaire philanthropist who’s running for Mayor. Needless to say, Bruce finds a father figure in Theo, but as for Silver, well, she’s described as having a heart beating with dark intent. In other words, she’s probably not someone Bruce wants to fall for.

Echo Kellum joins Arrow as Mr. Terrific
The Ben and Kate alum will play Curtis Holt, aka Mr. Terrific. Holt is a technological savant and inventor who works at Palmer Technologies under the supervision of Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards).

Friday Night Lights producer apologizes for anti-Caitlyn Jenner post
Peter Berg shared a meme posted on Facebook by a “news personality” using the name Main Stream Media Sponsor Boycotts, Entertainment Weekly reports. It had a photo of Army veteran and double amputee Gregory D. Gadson alongside one of Jenner, with the caption “One man traded 2 legs for the freedom of the other to trade 2 balls for 2 boobs. Guess which man made the cover of Vanity Fair, was praised for his courage by President Obama and is to be honored with the ‘Arthur Ashe Courage Award’ by ESPN?”

Thursday evening, however, Berg posted this statement: “I have the utmost respect for Caitlyn Jenner and I am a strong supporter of equality and the rights of trans people everywhere. I also believe that we don’t give enough attention to our courageous returning war veterans, many of whom have sacrificed their bodies and mental health for our country and our principals — principals that include the freedom to live the life you want to live without persecution or abuse.”

Joy Bryant and Chris Diamantopoulos join Amazon pilot Good Girls Revolt
Written and executive produced by Dana Calvo, the project is set in 1969 at the beginning of the women’s rights movement when a group of young women at the hottest magazine in the world ask to be treated fairly, setting off a convulsive chain of events. Bryant will play civil rights activist Eleanor Holmes Norton, and Diamantopoulos is Oz.

Jason Dohring to recur on The Originals
Dohring — who most famously appeared as Logan Echolls on UPN/The CW's Veronica Mars, and reprised the role in Rob Thomas' 2014 film — will make his Originals debut in the third season premiere. He'll play Detective Will Kinney, who is described as smart and confident with a very clear sense of right and wrong, who is out to bring the forces of evil to justice.

American Crime Season 2 storyline and characters revealed
The second season will take place in the Midwest, where the main crimes being tackled involve sexual identity and the disparity in the school systems, creator John Ridley and and exec producer Michael McDonald tell Variety. Timothy Hutton and Felicity Huffman both play members of the staff of an elite private school. Hutton will be playing the basketball coach at the school, while Huffman plays the headmistress.

Has Pretty Little Liars become "too big for its britches and has lost its way"?
"With Season 7 already green-lit, it’s time for executive producer Marlene King to go back to the basics: Keep the plot within Rosewood’s borders and toss all add-on characters aside — sorry, Caleb (Tyler Blackburn)."

Sierra Leone ebola radio soap opera renewed for a third season
The soap opera, titled Us Kayn Tin Dis in the native Krio language, focuses around the themes of how Ebola is spread and what to do once someone in the family or neighborhood has been confirmed to carry the virus. At the end of each episode, the radio stations airing the project broadcast a quiz about Ebola dangers. Themes covered on the show include “prevention, transmission, treatment, safe burial practices, dispelling the myths, eliminating stigma and promoting unity,” local media report. Listeners can win a number of prizes, including essential food items. Winners are announced weekly.

‘Look at their dignity!’ This Jew-flattering Egyptian soap opera is a surprise hit with Palestinians
A dozen Palestinian Muslim men gathered after midnight at an isolated farm house this week to indulge in a new delight. They were going to watch a soap opera about Jews. The steamy Egyptian soap, Haret al-Yahud (or The Jewish Quarter), tells a Romeo and Juliet tale of a beautiful daughter of a well-to-do Jewish merchant and dashing Muslim army commander falling in and out and in love again in old Cairo during the earth-shaking 1948 Arab-Israeli war and its aftermath.

Lathering up for TV3's new soap, decision coming next week on New Zealand project
New Zealand On Air will decide on Wednesday whether to fund a new 5.30 p.m. soap opera for TV3. The new soap, aimed at delivering viewers to 3News, is a major push for TV3's new programming strategy, so details are being kept under wraps. But MediaWorks decided long ago the show would be made by Warner Bros New Zealand, which has roots back to Touchdown, the production firm founded by Julie Christie.

Indications are that the show would run four days a week and require funding of more than $10 million. A request for proposal was set out in October, seeking a compelling family-centric show suitable for a G certificate timeslot "with appealing, accessible characters and a rich, dramatic narrative."

Tory plans for BBC shakeup could lead to ‘much diminished service’
Diane Coyle, a former deputy chair of the BBC Trust, said the government was in danger of “dismantling the BBC’s civic value and destroying its economic value, which makes it even more important to involve the British public, especially as they haven’t had a chance before” to become involved.

She added: “People do care about programs. If Whittingdale is going to have a narrowly focused BBC is it no to EastEnders and soaps but [BBC1 Peter Moffat drama] The Village is OK? And who is going to choose?”

NEWS: Scandal, Spice, And Sex(Ed); Francis Ford Coppola at Y&R; Lauren Koslow, Greg Vaughn and Camila Banus on NECN

DAYS stars Lauren Koslow, Greg Vaughn and Camila Banus promote
the new "Better Living" book on NECN (video below)
Scandal, Spice, And Sex(Ed): How A Soap Opera May Change The Fortunes Of One Impoverished African Country
There is a radio soap opera in Burundi that will soon air with positive health messages in its otherwise racy storylines. Burundi is a small country in the heart of Africa- one of the poorest and least developed in the world.

In Burundi there are lots of condoms and lots of organizations teaching people how to use them and why to use them. And yet, as mentioned, only 18% of women use modern contraception. Obviously there is disconnect between good intentions and results. So, we’ve begun working on a new approach: a unique communication program that has worked in numerous countries around the world, and holds great promise in a country like Burundi, where audiences are fanatic about soap operas. The idea? A locally-written, locally-produced soap about life in Burundi, peppered with positive values and modeling healthy behaviors.

Francis Ford Coppola on the set of THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS
He is interested in learning more about multi-camera and live TV and was on set and in the control room of the hit CBS daytime soap.

After observing production, Coppola said of the experience, "I'm enjoying being at THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS. The people are wonderful. I'm learning a lot."

Primetime Emmys: An ‘In Memoriam’ Post Mortem — What Went Wrong
The uncomfortable, often nasty and therefore decidedly unfortunate angst centered on the special tributes would have been avoided had the Academy and CBS chosen not to publicize them beforehand. And the only reason to publicize them is for precisely the reason many people objected to Monteith’s inclusion: as a barely disguised attempt to boost the Emmycast’s ratings. There’s absolutely no other incentive.

NASHVILLE's Sam Palladio Teases Gunnar's Season 2 Journey: He's 'Finding Himself'
“After all that kind of — the brother stuff, that arc he went on was kind of crazy, so he’s finding his relationship with himself a little more and his music and a close relationship with Will — Chris Carmack’s character — builds more this year,” Sam said.

The real star of ABC's NASHVILLE? Nashville
“It’s a capital investment and a personnel investment that occurs in the city,” Mayor Karl Dean said. “Which is even more important because it helps us develop our TV and film industry here, which I think is a natural next step for us in terms of being Music City, to have that element here, too. But it’s hard to put a number on what it means to have a network TV show named NASHVILLE that has a positive outlook on the city and is viewed by millions and millions of people. That’s something that doesn’t happen to most cities, and I think it’s a good thing for us to embrace it.”

Will Rayna and Deacon Reconcile? Will Juliette Find Love? NASHVILLE Bosses Spill on Season 2
What about the Scarlett-Avery-Gunnar-Will love square? Between these four, romance and friendship will only get more complicated. For Will (Chris Carmack), his struggle between being gay and wanting to be a country music star will continue. "Ultimately Rayna is going to have a working relationship with him and it's wrought with all the complications that the audience is aware of and Rayna is not," showrunner Dee Johnson says, adding that Gunnar, maybe surprisingly, will end up being a truly good friend to Will in the process.

NEWS: Emmy In Memoriam & Diversity Controversies; More DAYS Book Tour Videos; New Bethany Joy Lenz Show on E!

Larry Hagman's Son on Emmy "In Memoriam" Controversy
Sunday night's Emmy Awards telecast tried to do something a little different by singling out five stars who had recently passed away and independently eulogizing them with anecdotes from their respective former co-stars and friends.

The stars remembered with a special moment on last night's telecast were James Gandolfini, Jonathan Winters, Jean Stapleton, FAMILY TIES creator Gary David Goldberg, and Cory Monteith. Other stars fondly remembered in the In Memoriam montage included Hagman, Dennis Farina, Annette Funicello, Conrad Bain, Lee Thompson Young, Eileen Brennan, Bonnie Franklin, Jeanne Cooper, Allan Arbus, Charles Durning, Alex Karras, Jack Klugman, Julie Harris, Andy Williams and Roger Ebert.

"I think three seconds was short," Preston Hagman told ET. "I think all of them were short. If you are going to honor [the 'In Memoriam' recipients], honor them with the respect and dignity that they portrayed. Do it for everyone. These are very talented people. The actors that they’re honoring have done so much for the industry... If you're going to respect and recognize them then do it correctly."
