Telemundo Breaks August Ratings Record

Telemundo Media achieved the best August ratings in the network's history, delivering 1.3 million total viewers, up 8% over last year and up 10% (664,000 vs. 602,000) among adults 18-49 during Monday through Sunday primetime programming, according to Nielsen. Telemundo was also the fastest growing Spanish-language network year-over-year among Monday-Sunday primetime among total viewers and adults 18-49 with a share of 28%, up 3 points vs. last year in this demo. The network ranked as the fastest growing Spanish language network in the 18-49 demo for the seventh consecutive month.

PREMIOS TU MUNDO Winners: LA PATRONA, Jencarlos Canela, Aracely Arámbula

Telemundo’s live broadcast of the second annual PREMIOS TU MUNDO (Your World Awards) from the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida, celebrated what is hot in novelas, music, fashion, movies and sports. The star-studded event, hosted by telenovela stars Gaby Espino and Aaron Diaz, featured high energy performances and appearances by prominent artists. Top honors went to the novela LA PATRONA, which was awarded Novela of the Year, Favorite Protagonist – Female: Aracely Arámbula, Best Villain – Female: Christian Bach, Best Supporting Actor: Gonzalo García Vivanco, The Perfect Couple: Aracely Arámbula and Jorge Luis Pila, Legendary Actress: Christian Bach and Best Bad Luck Moment.

Through fan voting and a selection process that combined the power of television, web, mobile and social media platforms, Telemundo viewers made their choice and selected the winners from 20 competing categories.

SECRETOS DEL PARAÍSO
While it is a custom of this column to focus on English-friendly telenovelas, i.e., those available with English captions, I would be remiss if I did not mention SECRETOS DEL PARAÍSO (weeknights at 8 p.m. ET on MundoFox), I think the best telenovela airing right now in the US, perhaps the best of the year.

SECRETOS DEL PARAÍSO is a very serious, mature telenovela that creates a suffocating atmosphere of tension in its examination of a pair of damaged families, united by a marriage in the first week. The heavy use of flashbacks of the crimes committed by the protagonists’ parents gives an impression of the past forever intruding upon and shaping the present discord in the lives of their children. There is a marvelous sense of impending doom prevalent through the telenovela, of nooses tightening as the relationships between the characters get messier and messier.

Social TV-Firsts During Telemundo's Awards Show Premious Tu Mundo

Telemundo Media unveiled the most enhanced and innovative social TV experience for the upcoming “Premios Tu Mundo” Awards to air live from the American Airlines Arena on Thursday, August 15 at 8 p.m. ET. In an industry first, the Spanish-language network will exclusively reveal the winner of its “Más Social” award through a Vine video aired during the show. Additionally, Vine and zeebox will partner for the first time to provide a seamless experience for zeebox users. Telemundo Media announced today that its first-ever PREMIOS TU MUNDO (Your World Awards) awards show, which aired last night at 9pm ET, was watched by 1.68 million total viewers (persons 2+) and 912,000 adults 18-49, according to Nielsen. The pre-show special at 8pm, “Alfombra de Premios Tu Mundo,” was seen by 1.4 million total viewers and 708,000 adults 18-49. Hosted by telenovela superstars Gaby Espino and Rafael Amaya and featuring top music performers Jencarlos Canela among others, the awards show telecast increased the time period performance among total viewers and adults 18-49 by +24% and +27%, respectively, over the prior four-week Thursday time period average. Cumulatively, the awards show reached 4.06 million total viewers, of which 2.26 million were adults 18-49.

The protagonists of AMOR BRAVÍO (weeknights at 10 p.m. ET on Univision) finally met in Thursday’s episode, a coincidental encounter in a café.  It was fairly typical of these types of scenes: Camila (Silvia Navarro) prepares to take a seat at a table when Daniel (Cristián de la Fuente) reveals he was already sitting there, his gear on one of the chairs.  As Camila excuses herself she drops her belongings, in this case sunflowers, onto the floor, they both reach down to retrieve them, their eyes meet, the moment is held.  It’s a scene variations of which must have played in hundreds of telenovelas.

EL ROSTRO DE LA VENGANZA premieres this Monday at 10:30 p.m. ET on Telemundo, the third telenovela to premiere on the network this month.  Bizarrely, the television promos for the show vaguely state the start time as “after PABLO ESCOBAR;” EL ROSTRO DE LA VENGANZA looks to be a mystery telenovela, but does the time the show is airing really have to be kept a mystery as well?
