NEWS: Peter Reckell, Disney Subscriber Losses, 'Empire' Online Store, Bryan Cranston

Peter Reckell on shooting the death of Bo Brady on Days of our Lives
“What’s keeping me from saying, ‘Killing Bo? That’s not a good idea,’ is … what I discovered over the past three years, and that is being a dad,” Reckell tells Soap Opera Digest. "And the important role I have in my daughter’s life…. As important and as wonderful and inspirational as being Bo Brady is, this job of being Loden’s dad is more important to me at this time.”

Being Mary Jane is redefining single womanhood
Creator Mara Brock Akil intentionally kept her title character single. "The working title of this was Single Black Female, because sometimes we’re reduced to those three words,” she says.

Jane the Virgin's is portraying a radically frank depiction of early motherhood
“The truly radical thing about this season of Jane the Virgin,” says Kathryn VanArendonk, "has been how much of these first episodes have been about the unavoidable, unglamorous, and absolutely life-consuming physical reality of new motherhood. Jane Villanueva uses a breast pump. Frequently. She worries about her milk supply. Her body does not bounce back instantly. She is exhausted, and her baby’s presence is a new constant in her life.”

NBC is developing a college sex scandal drama
Fated will revolve around a sex scandal connecting the university’s president and head football coach, who are brothers.

Robert Rorke complains that primetime's "high brow" dramas are turning into daytime soap operas
The New York Post writers says: "Bringing characters back from the dead? That’s the kind of plot device usually found on daytime drama to goose ratings and arouse sleepy fans. So when did shows such as Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead become soap operas on par with Days of our Lives, which famously brought back notorious villain Stefano DiMera (Joseph Mascolo) from the grave, or The Young and the Restless, which killed off Adam Newman and revived him — with another actor (Justin Hartley) playing the role?"

Disney Suffers Severe Cable Subscriber Losses
The Walt Disney Company has lost 7 million subscribers to its cable networks in the last two years, according to a regulatory filing posted by the company Wednesday. Among the networks posting losses is ESPN, which at 92 million subscribers is down from the 95 million reported in 2013. Disney Channel, Disney XD and ABC Family, all Disney-owned, each had 4-5 million lost subscribers over the two year period, according to the company’s annual 10K report.

FOX has launched the official Empire online store
The store, which boasts show-inspired apparel (like a skirt-and-crop-top outfit and colorful jersey dresses), show quote tops ("Porsha, get my damn shoe!"), and more items. To celebrate the opening, Fox is hosting a contest that includes a $1,000 shopping spree to shop the store. (For those who don't win, there's still good news: the store's currently running a sale, with items up to 40% off!)

NEWS: Peter Reckell, Kassie DePaiva, Jennifer Landon, James Franco, #SayTheirName

Peter Reckell
Days of our Lives star Peter Reckell: "I’m so proud of the show right now"
"That’s why I’m so proud of the show right now; that’s what they’re doing, giving the audience exactly what they want," says Reckell, who recently returned as Bo Brady. "I’m really proud of these new head writers for heading in that direction."

On Bo's relationship with Ciara: "I just want to say that [Vivian Jovanni] is amazing. That’s difficult, because I’m in love with Lauren [Boles], and to have her replaced, I got to admit, at first I was disappointed. But what they’ve done, the way they’ve handled the character and her growing up, was really cool. She’s a great mixture of the characters of Bo and Hope. I think the audience is really going to connect to their relationship, because we did get to spend a lot of time together, the two characters. She’ll be kind of carrying the mantle of Bo onward."

Kassie DePaiva says it's been a challenge to make Eve Donovan real
"Eve is a very challenging character," DePaiva says. "She's very damaged so it's been challenging to make her real."

General Hospital alum James Franco is teaching high school now
ranco, student of life, teacher of N.Y.U. and U.S.C. film students, guest starrer of soap operas, will next bestow his hard-won wisdom upon a lucky few high-schoolers. Friday night via Instagram, Franco alerted the young citizens of California that he’d be hosting an eight-part film class at Silicon Valley’s Palo Alto High School and encouraged them to join him. “Sign up NOW! 💥” he implored (sunburst emoji his).

The Young and the Restless and As the World Turns actress Jennifer Landon stars in I Spit on Your Grave 3: Vengeance Is Mine
Anchor Bay Entertainment will release the R.D. Braunsten-directed sequel into limited theaters on October 9, 2015. A DVD, Blu-ray, and VOD release will follow on October 20, 2015.

Jennifer Landon (ex-Gwen, ATWT; ex-Heather, Y&R), Doug McKeon and Gabriel Hogan co-star in this unforgiving, unmerciful, and uncut new chapter of one of the most notorious franchises in movie history.

SPOTLIGHT: 'Days of our Lives' Memorable Musical Montages

I an a romantic. I admit it. I want to watch a couple fall in love slowly and and sit on the edge of my seat as I wait for "the moment." Do you remember the days when your favorite couple fought so hard to be together? And then, when they were finally united, they received their own special song? This signified that they had "made it." Or when they were torn apart, they would remember the good times shared, and the beautiful song would play in the background of a flashback sequence. Do you miss that? I do!

I miss hearing the latest pop songs on the soaps and how much many of them added to the shows in the '80s and early '90s, before the show couldn't afford to pay for them anymore. Music added so much to the moment.

Today, I want to highlight Days of Our Lives, which was known as the show for supercouples and romance. Below are some of my favorite musical montages from the past, including John (then thought to be Roman) and Marlena, Bo and Hope, Kim and Shane, and Steve and Kayla. I would love to hear what you think about the use of music in daytime soaps.

Kristian Alfonso Celebrates 30 Years on DAYS OF OUR LIVES

In a new interview with TV Guide Magazine, Kristian Alfonso reflects on her 30 years at DAYS OF OUR LIVES as Hope Williams Brady.

"Pete is missed but what is there to do?" she says about missing her longtime co-star, Peter Reckell (Bo). "It was his choice to leave. I hear he's extremely happy."

And what's ahead for Hope?

"I've heard there's a solo story coming for me. It would be great to see Hope trying to move on and what a struggle that would be for her. I'd like to see her build a relationship with another strong guy, whether it's on the job or maybe she meets someone through being a single mom. I've had so many stories without Pete. Princess Gina was almost a year without him. And he had many without me. But what people remember most is the two of us together. We were given a golden opportunity."

Alfonso's anniversary is April 14.

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow - In Honor Of SeptemBeard!

"Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow"
by Nelson Aspen

In honor of "SeptemBeard" --a witty celebration of facial hair intended to help raise awareness and donations in the fight against a leading killer of men, prostate cancer-- I am going razor-free for the next month.  I wrote a blog article about Hollywood's hottest hirsute heartthrobs (including Jake Gyllenhaal, Gerard Butler, Hugh Jackman...  You can read it here.) but I realized how woefully lacking the Daytime TV genre has always been in the Beard Department (that includes Talk & Game shows, too).  Does the female demographic the Sponsors covet really prefer baby-faced heroes with shiny, plucked chests and androgynous good looks?  Or might there be some viewers out there waiting to "Woof!" at the sight of some Au Naturel guys with some fuzz not only on their hands and feet, but right up there on their chiseled cheekbones or square cut jaw lines?
