A number of indie web soaps premiered in 2009. Now that both GOTHAM and VENICE have debuted, here's a look back at the premiere episodes of each.

EMPIRE (July 12): There was a shocking discovery at the Haven mansion.
PALISADES POOL PARTY (October 22): Popular high school senior, Cassidy Flowers, slept with her rather unpopular next door neighbor.

News Round-up: Bierdz, ARCHERS, Windsor, Sheldon
Thom Bierdz Honored For Literary Work
The National Best Books 2009 awards named Bierdz’s tome-Winner in the Autobiography/Memoirs division. This award is given out annually by the Best U.S.A. Book News organization. Bierdz spoke to the L.A. Canyon News about the honor. “This was a huge surprise. The autobiography category is the biggest category with the most entries. I had no idea I would have a chance to win it. It is very exciting and a great honor,” said Bierdz, adding “It was very important to share my past so others can benefit.”
THE ARCHERS: An everyday story of topical folk
Norman Painting, the longest-serving actor in the BBC's venerable radio soap opera, THE ARCHERS, died on what would otherwise have been a day of celebration for the 60-year-old show. New figures showed its ratings soaring, and suggested that programmes that had maintained their standards were doing better than those that had joined the rush to dumb-down.
If anything, THE ARCHERS has been subtly dumbing-up. Once presented as "an everyday story of country folk", it now styles itself as "contemporary drama in a rural setting". Nothing illustrated the development better than the slow ascent of Norman's character, Phil Archer, from a randy, motorbike-riding lad-about-the-shires into the upstanding, admired-by-all patriarch of the fictional village of Ambridge.
Windsor denies salary dispute led to EASTENDERS exit
The actress said she was "upset" by speculation that an argument with BBC bosses or a row over money was behind her decision to quit, sparked by a comment by her EASTENDERS co-star Larry Lamb that something had "really upset" Windsor.
"I am upset at suggestions made that I have chosen to leave EASTENDERS because of money, changes that are being made to the show or a supposed 'bust up with producers' as there is absolutely no truth in them," Windsor said.
"I made the tough decision to leave for purely one reason - after 15 years in the show I want to spend more time with my husband, Scott."
EDGE OF NIGHT writer Lee Sheldon cared about audience
Lee Sheldon spoke at “A Writer's Life” at Wells College on Friday night.
“If you care enough about your work, then you care about the audience, ” he said. “Write things that touch people. I write because I don't have any choice,” he said. “It's not a career, it's a vocation, a need within me. I would do it for free. I have no choice.”
4.5 million watch BETTY
4.5 million viewers watched UGLY BETTY on Friday which doesn't bode well for the show's future.
Aspen joins HOLLYOAKS
HOLLYOAK viewers will see a new face next week when Duncan arrives in Chester. The 15-year-old, played by Dean Aspen, will get a frosty welcome from his godparents Neville (Jim Millea) and Suzanne Ashworth (Suzanne Hall) when he tries to buy alcohol in the Dog.
Rhonda Ross has a special place in her hear for ANOTHER WORLD
"ANOTHER WORLD holds and will always hold a very special place in my heart. I learned so much from the producers, directors and the veteran actors on that show. The people in the cast remain my dear friends to this day. On top of that, we had the best fans of any show ever! I will be forever grateful for my time in Bay City!"

The We Love Soaps Interviews
We Love Soaps has a lot of exciting interviews and surprises lined up for this summer as the site continues to grow, so I thought it would be a good time to take a look a back at some of our exclusive interviews.
FAMILY DINNER Time For Lauralee Bell
"What people don't really know about my Dad, and he's very much like Brad, was that he was the most approachable boss ever. He was a jokester, and was always waiting for a punchline, and was never really angry or mad, and was like a mini-comic in my eyes. I feel like what I'm doing now in FAMILY DINNER, which people think is so different from Christine, is really my natural instinct, to always go to a humorous place. Our rehearsals at THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS were also so funny because we would do it exactly opposite of how it was written. Doug Davidson and I would have the best time. So even though my Dad wasn't an actor per se, he definitely had some show business in him."
EVAN ALEX COLE: Welcome to the Soap WORLD
"Basically, I had been in with Mary Clay [Boland, Casting Director] many times trying to see what might work and what wouldn't work. One week I didn't have any auditions lined up so I made plans to go home and see Momma in Atlanta. Everything was great and I was on the plane and I get a phone call from my agent saying that Mary Clay called and has this role she thought I'd be great for it and wanted to get me in to see the producers. He was like, "Where are you?" and I told him I was on the plane and he said he would call her to see if we could get it on tape or whatever. After I got off the phone, I was sitting there and thinking this could be great and it was what I wanted for so long, and the door was still open, so I literally got up and got off the plane. I called my agent back from a cab on the way home, and told him I wanted to make sure Mary Clay knew I was here. I went in the next day and met the producers. I got to meet Chris Goutman the next week, and was playing Hunter the following week."
INTERVIEW: Stage, TV and Film Star Patrika Darbo
"I didn't even think I was coming on full-time. The casting director at the time was Fran Bascom who I also knew personally, and we were at a party at Ronnie Claire Edwards' (Corabeth, THE WALTONS) house and in passing she asked me if I would considering doing a soap. I said, 'Of course, Fran, absolutely', thinking I could come on going, 'Hey, here's your beer. Do you want any peanuts' or 'Your hair looks good, mam. Thank you very much' or 'I finished dusting in this room'. I had no concept of what she was asking me until I got there and saw my hunky husband and I'm thinking to myself, 'Oh my God, they don't know who I am, they've cast the wrong person'."
INTERVIEW: Daytime Emmy Winner Judi Evans
"I’ve done a few projects for friends, and auditioning like crazy. I’ve also started a new facet to my life. I now sell cemetery property and funerals on a pre-need basis at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, California. I find it extremely rewarding to be of service to the community."
INTERVIEW: From Soaps to Novelist, Louise Shaffer
"As usual, I was playing the bitch, which is what I have always played. I don't know whether's it's because my eyes are deep set or I have high cheek bones. I have the feeling maybe I come across as a little calculated. As an actor, I have an emotional content and I can turn on all that Italian in me and it kind of bubbles up, but my first way of approachings things is kind of analytically, which is not necessarily good. I think it gave me a slightly calculated thing that seemed to suggest bitches."
INTERVIEW: Writer/Director/Producer Mark Jones
"My grandmother watched DAYS OF OUR LIVES, and our maid watched THE EDGE OF NIGHT. I watched GENERAL HOSPITAL with my sisters, the Luke and Laura adventures. I also was a big fan of DALLAS and KNOTS LANDING. I love the real honest-to-God Friday afternoon cliffhanger or the primetime cliffhangers like 'Who Shot JR?' That's something we really strongly wrote in each episode of ON THE EDGE OF HAPPINESS."
INTERVIEW: NIGHT SHIFT Head Writer Sri Rao
"The other thing about bringing in new storylines, whether it be gay storylines, or stories about people of color, different ethnicities, unless it comes intrinsically from the writer, the writer living this, what that is, it's not going to work. The only way for gay storylines to really resonate is if gay writers are writing them. I know that is controversial and all the straight writers out there will be like 'you think I can't write a love story because I'm not gay'. I'm not saying that at all, but for the storyline to have heart, someone on the writing team who is gay, or has a very strong personal connection with that, needs to take the lead on writing the heart of that story."
WHERE ARE THEY NOW: ATWT's Colleen Broomall
"All of the memories that I do have are amazing ones. The ones that stick out the most would have to include the annual ATWT holiday parties, charity softball games, meet and greets with fans, and the wardrobe team who so kindly allowed me to try on all of the "grown up" shoes, dresses and jewelry -- talk about a little girl's dream. I also absolutely loved my time with Scott Bryce, Lindsay Frost, and Patsy Bruder. During the summer months, production arranged it so that my brothers and sister were extras at the beach club. It was so fun for all of us to be on set together."

PREVIEW: Tonight's ON THE EDGE OF HAPPINESS
Cousin Elizabeth is back and she and Sarah go at it while visiting grandmother Helen Perkins.
Even though the shooter is revealed, several other storylines are left up in the air. Creator/Writer Mark Jones tells We Love Soaps, "I do hope that a second season is shot. Waiting to make some decisions about that. As of Monday at 3 PM, there have been just over 91,000 hits at the website in March."
He goes on to add, "This might be a rare occurrence, but the last scene of the show was the last scene we shot. Principle shooting ended on June 30th and the last scene was shot in late September. During July and August, I was getting ready for the GLBT film festival (Outflix) in Memphis. Once we got out of the groove, it was a little difficult to get everyone back together."
As the final episode of the season approaches, Jones hopes viewers have sampled the show and liked it. "I hope everyone has enjoyed watching ON THE EDGE OF HAPPINESS. Thanks for watching. All the episodes will stay on line for a while, so please help spread the word."
You can catch up at edgeofsoapopera.com. The season finale will be online later this evening.

PREVIEW: Tonight's ON THE EDGE OF HAPPINESS
"Episode Four is probably my favorite episode. So much happens," Creator/Writer Mark Jones tells We Love Soaps. "It's the only episode that takes place at night. We shot at the 'cemetery' all night long for the coffin scenes. Even the indoor scenes are all lit for night. The gaffer and cinematographer did an excellent job setting the mood with the lighting.
Looking back, its amazing that we shot all the cemetery scenes almost a year ago. We started shooting April 10, 2008. The nighttime scenes at the cemetery were the first scenes shot for the whole soap opera. The scenes at the Van Linus house were shot in an art gallery. The owner let us come in after closing and we shot all the Van Linus house scenes in one night. I think that was about the middle of April."
Jones makes an appearance on camera in tonight's show as well. "Yes, that's me as Stevens the Butler," he says. "I've got two more scenes in episode four."
Will there be another shocking cliffhanger this week? Jones says, "Someone whose not said much in the past couple of episodes says six shocking words at the end of the episode."
You can catch up on the series at edgeofsoapopera.com.

ON THE EDGE OF HAPPINESS: Episode #3
The third episode of the Mark Jones web soap ON THE EDGE OF HAPPINESS is now available. The mystery of "Who Shot Sarah" continues.
Tuesday, March 10, 2009
PREVIEW: Tonight's ON THE EDGE OF HAPPINESS
Creator/Writer Mark Jones tell We Love Soaps: "I was inspired by something that happened on DAYS OF OUR LIVES in the early 90s for the cliffhanger (no one is possessed by the devil). The cliffhanger is Soap Opera 101, because other soaps, if not all of them, have done something like this at one time or another."
Elsewhere, a witness to the shooting is questioned and more clues come out about the identify of the shooter.
A new character is character is introduced: Doctor Keith, who does favors for the Van Linus Family when asked.

Watch ON THE EDGE OF HAPPINESS Episode #2
PREVIEW: Tonight's ON THE EDGE OF HAPPINESS
The gay couple emerges this week in episode two. The two guys kiss in the first scene of the show. Writer/Producer Mark Jones tells We Love Soaps: "We shot these scenes when ATWT had its unofficial kissing ban going on in April 2008, so it was very important to me that we show a gay couple kissing and doing other normal things that soap characters do. In fact they kiss twice in the episode two. We show them in bed together (not sexual) in episode three. Something that still hasn't been done on TV."
Jones encourages everyone to visit the family tree page on the show's website as more characters are introduced in episode two. A picture of each character should pop up at the bottom of the page as you scroll over the family name.
Jones says the response has been fabulous so far. "People are watching the show. I very excited."

Watch ON THE EDGE OF HAPPINESS Episode 1
News Round-up
Did you hear the one about the young Southern woman who was shot and sent into a coma on her wedding day by a mystery assailant after it was revealed that she was pregnant, that she stole her boyfriend from her cousin, that she'd been sleeping with a married man and that she was planning to sell the historic family farm to a shopping mall developer, despite the objections of her gay preacher brother?
And all that happens in the first episode of Memphis filmmaker Mark Jones' new online soap opera ON THE EDGE OF HAPPINESS, which launches at 10pm ET Tuesday at edgeofsoapopera.com. A public party celebrating the launch begins two hours earlier at Quetzal.
EDGE Unveiled
The first episode — which takes place behind the scenes of an impending wedding between characters Sarah (Corie Ventura) and Philip (Billie Worley) — ends with a murder and sets up about half a dozen potential suspects with motives rooted in family intrigue, illicit affairs, and other kinds of drama.
WWE Revenues Up 8% In 2008
They made nearly $100 million in 2008 on pay-per-view and on-demand services. Perhaps soaps should do pay-per-view concerts and shows instead of tours like Soap Opera Mania. It would cut out a lot of the overhead and, in this economy, might be a much more profitable venture.
PRIVILEGED: Tonight's your last chance to boost the ratings
Tonight is the final episode of season one (and possibly the series finale).
Bill Roache has returned to work for the first time since the death of his wife. The actor - who has played Ken Barlow for 49 years - had been told by the soap's bosses that he could have as much time off as he needed, and storylines involving his character were rewritten. However, he made a subdued and gentle return to the STREET to film one scene with on-screen wife Deidre, before having meetings with CORRIE chiefs. An insider said: "They talked how his storylines were going to be altered to cater for his recent absence."
Kelli McCarty getting mixed reactions on porn career
Former Miss USA and PASSIONS star Kelli McCarty is getting mixed reactions to her new status as a porn star. Faithless, her first XXX movie from Vivid Entertainment (kelliusa.com) which was released on February 4th, is already on re-order and Kelli had a new star turn in the second episode of Vivid's DEEPER THROAT reality series on Showtime on Saturday night. On the other hand, not all her friends are thrilled with her new career choice.
"I had a blast making the movie because I enjoy acting and I really like sex," she says. "However, I am a bit surprised by the mixed reactions I'm now getting from friends. Men I've had only platonic relationships with over the years are now definitely viewing me in a more erotic way and one old friend suggested that I spend the night with him and his wife. But a woman who is a former cast mate from my days on the soap PASSIONS suggested that I leave country as soon as possible."
"Everyone dies on the show. I'm the only person standing in HOUSEWIVES at the end of the season. I get a gun and put everybody down. No, I'm only kidding. But it's true that Nicollette is leaving the show and the next episode will be her last. It's so bizarre because we were married on the show for a year, and off the set she's become so close to me and my wife. All I can tell you is she's going out with a bang, that's for sure. It's pretty amazing stuff."
PREVIEW: Tonight's ON THE EDGE OF HAPPINESS
Writer/Director/Producer Mark Jones says, "I've made two movies, but this web based series is a whole new ballgame. For a movie, all I have to do is get the viewer into the theater once, but now I've to get viewers to come to the website five times."
He adds, "I love soap operas, and so to make my own is a huge thrill. I just hope people will watch."
Here's a preview of tonight's premiere:
It seems that everyone has a reason why the wedding of Sarah Perkins and Philip Van Linus should not take place, but only one person is willing to go to great lenghts to ensure the wedding never happens.
Everyone has a motive, no one has an alibi.
Everyone is in the church for a wedding, but may be attending a funeral instead.

INTERVIEW: Writer/Director/Producer Mark Jones
I spoke recently with writer Mark Jones about his new online soap opera, ON THE EDGE OF HAPPINESS. In addition to writing the project, Jones served as producer and director. It was a labor of love that came partially out of his lifelong love for the soap genre. The new show has been described as one-third DALLAS, one-third DYNASTY, one-third "GAYS" OF OUR LIVES. It will be available on the show's website at edgeofsoapopera.com starting Tuesday, February 24, at 9pm CT, and subsequent Tuesdays over a five week span. You can watch a trailer there now.
Tell me a little about your background.
I'm a native Memphian. I went to college in South Carolina and got a degree in religion and worked a little over two years in a church in Mississippi as a Youth Director. Then I took early retirement from the church at age 24 or 25. I always wanted to make movies and make TV, but just didn't know how. I moved back to Memphis and took a job interning at a small local TV station. I also got a bunch of little odd jobs - teaching baseball to inner city kids, working at a t-shirt shop - to support myself. Then I got a job with our local PBS affiliate and did that for several years in the 90s. I was associate producer for a couple of shows. Then I worked for our Fox affiliate for about a year. I always had that hunger to make a movie. I wanted to write a movie and tell a story.
The first movie that I wrote and produced was Eli Parker is Getting Married?, and it was a coming out story. A lot of my friends from the PBS affiliate helped out on the project. My family owns a couple of acres in Mississippi and the story was set on a farm and we shot it for about a month. It took us a while to edit but it finally came out and was shown in about seven film festivals. I came out several years before this, and while Eli Parker wasn't about my life, some of the conversations I had with good friends were put into the movie. My second movie, Fraternity Massacre at Hell Island, got into six or seven film festivals as well.
How did ON THE EDGE OF HAPPINESS come about?
I had the idea for a soap storyline for a long time. Right after Christmas of 2007, I was driving from Memphis to North Carolina and was trying to think of new ideas and I thought of turning my soap story into five short films.
