'Days of our Lives' Renewed for 54th Season

"Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives."

Those words have drawn millions of viewers to their television sets for six decades, and will continue to be part of the broadcast day for a 54th season with the announcement today of NBC’s latest renewal of the acclaimed drama Days of our Lives.

"We're very excited about having more great Days in Salem," said Bruce Evans, Executive Vice President, Current Programming, NBC Entertainment. "Ken Corday and his team continue to tell stories with which the ‘Days’ loyal audience feels a deep connection. We congratulate them on their remarkable daytime legacy and look forward to what they have planned for the new season."

"We're thrilled that the sands will continue flowing through the hourglass for yet another year," said executive producer Ken Corday. "We are most grateful to NBC and Sony for their continued support of Days of our Lives. Buckle up because we have some exciting and compelling new stories coming to Salem this season."

Steve Kent, Senior Executive Vice President, Programming, Sony Pictures Television, added: "Ken Corday and his cast and crew continue to reach generations of viewers through intriguing storylines and strong characters. We are proud that generations of fans, both in the U.S. and around the world, will continue to enjoy Days of our Lives into its 54th season."

"Days of our Lives," which aired its 13,000th episode in 2017, remains a television institution. The show first premiered as a half-hour drama in 1965 and expanded to an hour 10 years later.

The show has garnered 52 Emmy Awards, including most recently being named Outstanding Daytime Drama in 2013 and 2015, and 298 nominations, as well as multiple People's Choice Awards, GLAAD Media Awards, and Prism Awards.

Days of our Lives airs nationally on NBC in the United States and in more than 25 countries internationally. On Monday, Bravo began airing repeats of Days from 2011.

How the Winter Olympics Will Impact 'Days of our Lives' Schedule

NBC will be airing new episodes of Days of our Lives throughout the Winter Olympics this month. However, due to Winter Olympic programming airing live each day across all time zones from 3-5 p.m. ET (2-4 p.m. CT, 1-3 p.m. MT, 12-2 p.m. PT) so viewers in the Mountain and Pacific time zones will need to check with their local affiliates to find out when Days will air in their local markets.

Days could potentially air earlier in the day in those time zones, or maybe overnight. Hopefully each affiliate will air the iconic soap opera at some point during the day. Fans can always watch at NBC.com and Hulu.

NBC Veteran Bruce Evans Promoted to Executive Vice President, Current Programming

Longtime NBC executive Bruce Evans has been promoted to Executive Vice President, Current Programming. He will report to NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke.

Evans, a well-respected leader in NBC’s current programming department and a veteran of the network for more than 20 years, replaces Vernon Sanders, who has signed an exclusive production deal with Universal Television. The two will work together over the next few months to ensure a seamless transition.

“There was never a moment that I didn’t see Bruce as the natural successor as head of our current business,” Salke said. “His remarkable skill set shines through in managing many of our biggest shows and I’m thrilled we’ll be able to work even more closely together moving forward.”

Evans, who was most recently Senior Vice President of Current & Daytime Programming, was responsible for many high-profile NBC series that helped propel the network to its current #1 status, including The Blacklist and Blindspot. In addition, Evans was the executive in charge of NBC's iconic daytime drama Days of our Lives.

Evans served as Director of Primetime Series shortly after he began in 1995 and was promoted five years later to Vice President of Primetime Series. In 2007 he earned a Senior Vice President title and over his career has worked on such series as “Heroes,” “Grimm,” “Medium,” “Crossing Jordan” and the entire “Law & Order” franchise.

Evans is a graduate of Brown University and received an MBA from the Yale School of Management.

Thomas Ian Griffith & Mary Page Keller Drama 'The Dunnings' in Development at NBC

One of my favorite couples on classic NBC soap opera Another World was Catlin Ewing and Sally Frame, portrayed by Thomas Ian Griffith and Mary Page Keller in the mid-1980s. Griffith and Keller became a real-life couple as well, and are still together more than three decades later. Keller continued to act, mostly recently in Chasing Life, Pretty Little Liars and Bosch. Griffith has turned his attention became the camera, writing and producing episodes of Grimm. Griffith is now reuniting with Grimm executive producers Sean Hayes and Todd Milliner for another hourlong project at NBC. The network has put in development The Dunnings, a family dance-school drama Griffth and Keller, Universal Television and Hayes and Milliner's studio-based Hazy Mills.

Written by Griffith and Keller, The Dunnings revolves around a prominent Connecticut family. When the matriarch passes away, her youngest daughter returns home to take over the dance school that her mother ran for 40 years and, in doing so, embarks on a journey to redefine the American dream.

Hayes and Milliner will executive produce, while Griffith and Keller co-executive produce.

In the clip below, watch Catlin and Sally's Another World wedding, which aired April 8, 1985.

Alec Baldwin Joins Cast of NBC's 'A Few Good Men'

Former daytime and primetime soap opera star Alec Baldwin, a two-time Emmy winner and Tony Award and Oscar nominee who has been on top of the cultural zeitgeist with his performance as President Donald Trump on "Saturday Night Live," has been cast as Col. Nathan Jessep in NBC's upcoming live "A Few Good Men," from esteemed playwright and Oscar and Emmy winner Aaron Sorkin, who will executive produce and adapt his own play for the broadcast.

Baldwin and Sorkin will join Craig Zadan and Neil Meron as executive producers of "A Few Good Men." Zadan and Meron's "Hairspray Live!" received seven Emmy nominations last week, including Outstanding Special Class Program.

"Alec Baldwin is the gift that keeps on giving at NBC, and we're excited to have him starring in Aaron Sorkin's towering work as we expand our live theater imprint beyond musicals," said Robert Greenblatt, Chairman, NBC Entertainment. "No stranger to live television, Alec is the most multi-faceted actor in the world and his range is incomparable. He will put his own inimitable stamp on the role of Col. Jessep in a play that is still as surprising and relevant as ever, from one of the most gifted writers working today."

"Alec is one of our greatest actors. Having him play this role - live onstage for a television audience - is a dream come true. This will be a brand new take on Nathan Jessep and I expect that Alec is going to bust through TV screens and right into living rooms," Sorkin said.

If NBC Cancels 'Days of our Lives' at Some Point, It Likely Will Have Nothing to do with Megyn Kelly

Megyn Kelly may be headed to NBC's 9 a.m. weekday timeslot instead of
afternoons, where a new show might be considered as a replacement for
Days of our Lives.
FOX News host Megyn Kelly officially signed on with NBC last week, wrapping her popular 9 p.m. ET program on Friday. Kelly will be hosting daily daytime show and a Sunday newsmagazine program at NBC, and the announcement kicked off much speculation that the weekday show she will be leading at her new network might replace iconic soap opera Days of our Lives. Days is officially renewed through this September, but is likely to be picked up for another season, until September 2018. Unless, of course, NBC finds a surefire replacement series, but those are very hard to come by, including Kelly's, especially with an audience as loyal as soap viewers.

People Magazine reported last week that a source connected to Days revealed that several cast members were told that this upcoming year of the series will likely be its last. The source said executives at the show have given some key staffers indication that their days are numbered.

“Basically, we’ve heard that there won’t be a Days in 2018,” said the source associated with the show, which recently celebrated its 51st anniversary.

Despite that worrison report, sources inside and outside NBC are now telling The Hollywood Reporter that Kelly may be headed for mornings instead of afternoons, with the network possibly giving Kelly the troubled 9 a.m. hour of Today. The move could solve the network's ratings woes without the hassle of launching a daytime talk show that would likely have an uphill climb when making its sales pitch to affiliates.

With Kelly, NBC News execs have the opportunity to rebrand the 9 a.m. hour of Today to fit her strengths as a reporter and interviewer and also achieve some flow between the more news-focused flagship block.

"It's another high-end talent in your most profitable block," says one industry observer. "If you keep her in her lane, can she do her kind of show at 9 a.m. versus 9 p.m.? I'd buy that."

Regardless of what happens with Kelly, Days fans are still worried about the show's future after the next renewal. Ratings will likely need to pick up significantly to justify production beyond September 2018, at least on NBC. It's hard to imagine the show's production company, Sony Pictures Television, would not pursue alternative outlets before letting the beloved daytime drama sign off forever.

'This Is Us' Returns Tuesday at a Special Time

Justin Hartley plays Kevin Pearson on This Is Us. Photo by:
Ron Batzdorff/NBC
In order to ensure viewers will be able to see the return of the best new primetime soap opera of the season on Tuesday, January 10, NBC has pushed back This Is Us to 10 and 9 p.m. in the Eastern and Central time zones, respectively, while airing it twice in the Pacific time zone.

The changes were made because of the network's airing of President Barack Obama's farewell speech to the nation live at 9 p.m. ET.

In the return episode, "The Right Thing to Do," Kate (Chrissy Metz) struggles with her feelings in the aftermath of Toby's (Chris Sullivan) heart attack. As William (Ron Cephas Jones) begins to spend more time with Jesse (Denis O'Hare), Randall (Sterling K. Brown) has to get used to his father's new relationship. After receiving the news they're expecting triplets, Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) must find a way to afford a home that can accommodate three babies. Olivia (Janet Montgomery) unexpectedly resurfaces, throwing both Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Sloane (Milana Vayntrub) for a loop.
