INTERVIEW: Kelsey Jorissen on 'The Dreamers' Season Finale, Being an Artist in Chicago, and The Future

Have you discovered Chicago-based web series The Dreamers yet? In the age of binge-watching, this is the perfect time. The season finale debuts tonight at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

Many have checked out the show, and it was recently nominated for two Indie Series Awards, best ensemble and best writing in a drama.

The Dreamers centers on Kara (Kelsey Jorissen) and her five best friends: Cavin (Mike Hamilton), Clarissa (Giselle Ruecking) Jackson (Michael Bartz), Brad (David Wesley Mitchell) and Eliza (Callie Stephens). All six have graduated from Art School and, as they fight to achieve their career dreams, it is the bond of friendship that keeps them going.

Ultimately, what makes The Dreamers such a relatable and heartwarming series is that we all know what it's like to endure the desperation, heartbreak and struggle it can be to make your dreams become a reality. Watching The Dreamers you get a true sense that these are real people that you could easily run into on the street. There isn't anything that feels manufactured for the sake of plot.

However, there is much more to The Dreamers. Like any good series, it focuses on the romantic lives of the main characters. Relationships end, new ones begin, but through it all the bonds of friendship are never broken. These are characters I would want to meet for coffee or a drink.

Do Kara, Cavin, Clarissa, Jackson, Brad and Eliza find the success and love that they want? You are going to have to watch to find out, and I urge you do so.

The Dreamers' Kelsey Jorissen and guest star
Michael Goldberg.
I was honored to have a chance to see the dynamic Kelsey Jorissen in action. Jorissen not only stars as Kara, but is also the writer and director of the series. It was fascinating watching her jump between acting and directing, especially as she was playing opposite someone (me) who has never acted before a day in his life.

I sat down with Kelsey after the shoot was over, and we spoke about what it was like for The Dreamers to be nominated for two Indie Series Awards, her goals for the show, and why The Dreamers is an Indie worth checking out. Read our exclusive interview below:

'Days of our Lives' Spotlight: Jack Deveraux and Jennifer Horton

I recently wrote out about the disastrous pairing of Daniel (Shawn Christian) and Jennifer (Melissa Reeves) on Days of Our Lives, asking if it was time for them to call it quits.  Based on the emails, comments on this website and the social media responses we received, many fans think it is.

The continued focus on this couple in the past few weeks has not helped make me root for them. In fact, I find myself rooting for Liam (Mark Collier). Something is not working. What did work for many years was the pairing of Jack and Jennifer. In their time they were the it couple. Their story had so many layers to it and the audience longed for them to be together. There was angst, drama, laughter, adventure and, most of all, love. It was obvious these two people belonged together.

The dynamic Matthew Ashford (the definitive Jack Deveraux) may never return to the show. And if he did, would it even be possible to recapture the dynamic the couple once had? Could the writers finally get it right? Jack and Jennifer fans remained very loyal to their favorite couple over the years, and they never had it easy.

So for those Jack and Jennifer fans out there, or for DAYS fans who never experienced this couple at their peak, below are a selection of classic videos that I consider to be some of their most defining moments.

Enjoy!

Hope's Choice on 'The Bold and the Beautiful'. Are You #TeamHott or #TeamLope?

The Bold and the Beautiful heroine Hope Logan (played by Kim Matula) has it all these days. It wasn't that long ago she was fighting Steffy Forrester (Jacqueline MacInnes Woods) endlessly for the love of Liam Spencer (Emmy winner Scott Clifton). But boy have the tables turned for this young lady.

Now, she gets to be the object of affection for two men: Liam and his half- brother, Wyatt (Emmy winner Darin Brooks, a nominee at this year's Indie Series Awards) Both Liam and Wyatt have their charms. Hope can let loose with Wyatt and have fun. However, Liam was her first love (Oliver who?) and he doesn't bring a psychotic mother like Quinn (Emmy winner Rena Sofer) to the table.

SPOTLIGHT: 'Days of our Lives' Memorable Musical Montages

I an a romantic. I admit it. I want to watch a couple fall in love slowly and and sit on the edge of my seat as I wait for "the moment." Do you remember the days when your favorite couple fought so hard to be together? And then, when they were finally united, they received their own special song? This signified that they had "made it." Or when they were torn apart, they would remember the good times shared, and the beautiful song would play in the background of a flashback sequence. Do you miss that? I do!

I miss hearing the latest pop songs on the soaps and how much many of them added to the shows in the '80s and early '90s, before the show couldn't afford to pay for them anymore. Music added so much to the moment.

Today, I want to highlight Days of Our Lives, which was known as the show for supercouples and romance. Below are some of my favorite musical montages from the past, including John (then thought to be Roman) and Marlena, Bo and Hope, Kim and Shane, and Steve and Kayla. I would love to hear what you think about the use of music in daytime soaps.

DAYS: Is It Time For Daniel & Jennifer To Call It Quits For Good?

DAYS OF OUR LIVES is doing so many things well right now. I have already gone on record saying how lovely the WilSon Wedding was. Salem feels like a town that I want to visit. Every character on the show is connected to each other in some way. Their use of history has never been better.

In a recent scene, Julie (the divine Susan Seaforth Hayes) let Sami (Alison Sweeney) have it for not giving "poor Nick" a second chance, considering all of the times the Hortons and Bradys have forgiven Sami. This takes even on more meaning, because how supportive Julie was of Sami, during the Sami & Lucas days.

Hope (Kristian Alfonso) is front and center again and working incredibly well with Daniel Cosgrove as Aidan.

Fireworks will explode when Sami finally finds out about EJ's affair with Abby.

However, there is something that still isn't working for me. That would be Daniel and Jennifer.

INTERVIEW: Kieran Turner, Robert Bogue and John Halbach Preview WALLFLOWERS Season 2

Created, written and directed by Kieran Turner (Jobriath A.D.), the web series WALLFLOWERS centers around a group of thirtysomethings dealing with life in New York City, who come together in a group for singles. At its heart, WALLFLOWERS highlights the bonds of friendship and the magic of love. Romance plays a major part in the show's second season, airing on STAGE17, and we are introduced to two potential new couples in the premiere--sexy and sweet Alex (John Halbach, EASTSIDERS) & cynical Bryce (Patch Darragh) and cocky Fred (Robert Bogue, GUIDING LIGHT) & feisty Jane (Jolly Abraham).

Love is universal, something we are all looking for. Daytime soap opera fans who are missing their daily dose of “love in the afternoon,” can check out WALLFLOWERS and find it, along with deep friendship, love, humor and romance.

We Love Soaps recently had the chance to speak to Kieran Turner, John Halbach, and Robert Bogue about the second season of WALLFLOWERS and more. Read our exclusive interview.

WE LOVE SOAPS:  Kieran, how did you come up with WALLFLOWERS?
KIERAN TURNER:  It was something that I had written as a pilot several years ago, but it was a little different. It wasn't necessarily focusing on that specific age group of older thirtysomethings I wrote it as a pilot just to see if I could write television and I kind of shoved it in a drawer and didn't do anything with it. I had made a film, a documentary called Jobriath A.D., about the first openly gay rock start star, and this was in 2012, and had been on the festival circuit with it. The programmers there had invited a web series called THE OUTS to participate. I wasn't very well versed in web series. But I was very impressed with what the folks at THE OUTS had been able to do. It had good writing, good production values, it looked really professional, and I realized people were actually doing it to this level and it was amazing.

DAYS: Why Will and Sonny's Wedding Mattered More Than You May Think

Sonny Kirirakis and Will Horton wedding photo.
Photo Credit: Photo Credit: JPI Studios/ Howard Wise
DAYS OF OUR LIVES couple Sonny and Will, affectionately known as "WilSon" to fans, got married this week, and a lot can be said about the first male same sex couple to get married on Daytime TV. Sonny and Will get to kiss, they get to have sex, and now they get to marry just like any other couple on soaps. But beyond that milestone, this wedding represented something different. Once upon a time in a soap opera land far, far away, a wedding meant something. A couple "earned" their wedding. They didn't meet, have sex, fall in love, and then get married in three months. What always made soap operas unique was viewers having the chance to see relationships develop slowly. How can you care about something, if you don’t have the time to invest in the relationship?

Will and Sonny have been through it all, and now they get their payoff. What makes this wedding extra special are the relationships between the characters that are connected to Sonny and Will. Marlena, ostensibly the heart and soul of DAYS, was the perfect person to officiate the ceremony. We saw on camera months of Marlena and Will bonding during his coming out process, as she helped him cope. She saw him through his darkest days.
