NEWS: Susan Lucci, Lawrence Saint-Victor, Eva Longoria, Sean Whitesell, Alison King, Don Stewart, Matthew Morrison, Kerry Washington, Sherilyn Fenn

Eva Longoria
Is Telenovela based on Eva Longoria's soap opera experience?
Longoria says that Telenovela, airing Monday nights on NBC, draws from her time on The Young and the Restless. But she connects with her character, Ana Sofia, in other ways too. “As a Mexican-American, I didn’t grow up speaking Spanish, so I was kind of shunned by my community,” says the Desperate Housewives alum. “Then in the American community, they were like, ‘Oh, you’re the Mexican,’ so I really never fit anywhere. And that’s exactly how Ana Sofia feels.”

Burgess Jenkins bids farewell to The Young and the Restless
Jenkins has left the role of Billy Abbott, which will be played by Jason Thompson started next week.

Jenkins wrote a short and sweet goodbye tweet on Friday: "Farewell GC, thanks for the memories! #YR"

Susan Lucci hopes Cincinnati coach Marvin Lewis doesn't lose another 12 NFL playoff games before notching his first postseason victory with the Bengals
After losing to Houston in 2012, Lewis said he was starting to feel like Lucci, who was nominated 19 times before winning her first Daytime Emmy Award for Best Actress in her role as Erica Kane on All My Children.

Three seasons later, Lewis and his Bengals host Pittsburgh on Saturday as the coach looks to avoid an NFL-record seventh straight postseason defeat.

"I hope he doesn't go 12 more years before he wins a playoff game," Lucci said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press, and she wasn't joking. "I certainly hope the best for him. I'm sure he has a similar feeling to what I had - how do you do your work better and grow?"

The Bold and the Beautiful's Lawrence Saint-Victor to guest star on BET's Zoe Ever After
Saint-Victor, who plays Forrester Creations attorney Carter Walton, is slated to appear in two episodes of Zoe Ever After as Stephen Hawthorne, a love interest for the title character, a divorced mother, played by Brandy Norwood. Former The Young and the Restless and General Hospital actor Ignacio Serricchio is a series regular in the role of Miguel.

Don Stewart
A look back at the life of Guiding Light alum Don Stewart, who passed away 10 years ago today
Jerry verDorn played Ross Marler on Guiding Light for more than 20 years, beginning in March 1979. He remembers Don showing kindness to him when he was a newcomer on the show.

“I joined Guiding Light in 1979 and Don had been there for 10 years or more,” verDorn said. “He was very kind to me, a young guy new to New York, and we had many scenes together from 1979 to 1984. We also had much in common as I, too, was a Midwesterner from both Dakotas and Minnesota. He was a terrific guy and wildly popular on the show.”

Tina Sloan played Lillian Raines, whose character was a love interest for Mike Bauer shortly before Stewart left the show in 1984.

“He was lovely to work with,” Sloan recalled. “He cared about appearances. He always took care of his looks. He always was prepared for scenes.”

While on Guiding Light, Don Stewart met his future wife, Susan.

“Don and I met in New York on a blind date with a Navy buddy of his shortly after he joined Guiding Light” she said. “I remember thinking I never heard this line before, ‘I’m an actor on Guiding Light.’ I am a nurse and the next day I asked a patient what she was watching and it turned out to be Guiding Light. There he was. That night I called him to apologize if I was rude and he asked me to dinner — and that was it.”

Planned Parenthood and the Media Research Council Release Statements Following Last Night's Episode of 'Scandal'

Kerry Washington stars as Olivia Pope on Scandal.
Planned Parenthood and the conservative Media Research Council have both released statements about what happened on last night's episode of ABC's Scandal.

Warning: Spoilers ahead...

In the episode, Republican Sen. Mellie Grant (Bellamy Young) filibustered a bill to defund Planned Parenthood (and it worked), while Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) decided to abort her baby. Viewers saw the abortion while "Silent Night" played the background.

Planned Parenthood released the following statement: "Tonight, the millions of people who tune into Scandal every Thursday night learned that our rights to reproductive health care are under attack. Never one to shy away from critical issues, [showrunner] Shonda Rhimes used her platform to tell the world that if Planned Parenthood lost funding for contraception counseling, STI testing, cancer screenings, and safe, legal abortion — millions of people would suffer. And this episode wasn’t the first time one of Rhimes’ characters had an abortion, yet tonight we saw one of our favorite characters make the deeply personal decision that one in three women have made in their lifetime. We applaud Shonda Rhimes tonight — and every Thursday night – for proving that when women are telling our stories, the world will pause and watch. We just hope those in Congress — and throughout the nation — who are steadfast on rolling the clock back on reproductive health care access are taking note.

The MRC had this to say: "Hollywood’s liberal values permeate movies and television. Last night’s episode of ABC’s Scandal was pretty much an hour-long advertisement for Planned Parenthood. In the most disturbing scene, the main character has an abortion to 'Silent Night' (a hymn celebrating the birth of Jesus) playing in the background. This is Hollywood’s moral depravity on full display."

Shonda Rhimes revealed an additional bit of information on Twitter: "The #Scandal writers did their research– every budget item Mellie recites it actually REAL. #TGIT"

Kerry Washington summed up her feelings by tweeting two hashtags: "#IStandWithMellie #IStandWithPlannedParenthood"

NEWS: Shonda Rhimes, Kerry Washington, Redaric Williams, Richard J. Allen, Taina Elg

Shonda Rhimes
Shonda Rhimes talks to Elle about power, feminism, police brutality and more
"The entire world is skewed from the white male perspective," says Rhimes. "If you're a woman, they have to say it's a female-driven comedy. If it's a comedy with Latinos in it, it's a Latino comedy. 'Normal' is white male, and I find that to be shocking and ridiculous."

Shonda Rhimes on pushing boundaries on Grey's Anatomy, Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder
"I always dispute the concept that we push boundaries. We do not push boundaries. I feel like we play very creatively within the fences that we've always had. I respect the fact that we have these fences. It's a really awesome challenge to do stuff creatively within them. I feel like we have a really good relationship. I don't believe that it's adversarial. We've been working with the same people for years and years and years. They are smart. It's not as if they're out to get anybody. They have a job to do, and we have a job to do. I happen to like debating, and I like to debate like a lawyer, and I can argue any points to death, and I will. But I really do feel like there is an attempt right now, just in general, to maybe push the line back a little bit. I think in our country, we're so oddly puritanical about the wrong things. You literally can shoot someone in the face on television and a 7-year-old can watch it. But you can't show the slight of a man's hip, because dear God, someone might think of sex. And while we all hope our kids grow up to have sex, we do not hope they grow up to shoot someone in the face."

Shonda Rhimes Reveals She Lost 98 Pounds This Year
"I realized I could either spend my life going, 'I wish I could lose weight,' or I could just do it," she said.

While Rhimes used her can-do attitude to achieve her weight loss goals, she admitted to the magazine that it didn't come easy. "Nothing is 100 percent fun all the time," she continued. "But I have never not done something with a pointed focus."

Empire Is the Most Aggressively Political Soap in TV History
Writes Matt Zoller Seitz: "From the placement of illustrations of pop-culture icons to whom Lucious is presumably an equal (Alfred Hitchcock, Jimi Hendrix, Billie Holliday, James Earl Jones) to the continual definitions and redefinitions of blackness, as embodied by the characters' arguments and power-grab schemes, the premiere alone had more to say about the tricky predicament of black entertainers on network TV than any of the think pieces that have been written about Empire since it debuted."

GLAAD is publishing an extensive report on the state of LGBT representation on television this morning. It’s become a major part of the organization’s media advocacy over the last decade — and after this year, it’s being replaced.

"Over the years, we’ve seen a remarkable increase in LGBT representation on most of the TV networks we track in our report," says Matt Kane, GLAAD’s programs director for entertainment media. "We may have the numbers, but [networks] still aren’t quite representing the LGBT community in a way that’s accurate… There are still people who are starved for representation in popular culture." Having achieved some progress on a quantitative level, GLAAD is focusing its efforts on broadening the kinds of LGBT people depicted on TV, namely people of color and transgender people.

Time’s 100 Most Influential People List Includes Kerry Washington, Robin Wright

Diekgerdes—Trunk Archive
Time has released 100 Most Influential People list for 2014. It includes Scandal star Kerry Washington and House of Cards actress Robin Wright, who started her career on the daytime soap opera Santa Barbara.

President Obama advisor Valerie Jarrett penned a tribute to Washington: "Occasionally in American pop culture, an icon emerges who captivates us and provides a vivid snapshot of who we are and the changing times in which we live. In her role as Olivia Pope, Scandal's unflappable political fixer, Kerry Washington has used her grace and vibrant magnetism to transcend age, race and gender, and to provide a new mainstream media lens through which to view modern womanhood and professional excellence."

Naomi Watts wrote about Wright: "Robin Wright is a woman who can check all the boxes.
