Casting Director Joan D'Incecco Has Passed Away

Joan D'Incecco
Legendary ABC daytime casting director Joan D'Incecco passed away on Friday, December 16.

D'Incecco graduated from Marquette University with a Ph.B. and received her M.S. from the University of Wisconsin, and served as a casting director for many television shows including Kojak, Car 54, Where are You? and The Patty Duke Show.

She later became casting director for ABC soap operas All My Children and One Life to Life, working over 20 years for the network.

She was best known for casting Susan Lucci as Erica Kane on All My Children. When she received her Emmy for the role in 1999, Lucci thanked D'Incecco, calling her "the legendary casting director, who saw me as more than just an ethnic type and saw that I could play Erica Kane."

Lucci spoke to NorthJersey.com last week about D'Incecco.

"At the time I was told I could not work in television because I was too ethnic looking -- I had dark eyes and an olive complexion -- but Joan was able to look past that and was very warm and encouraging," Lucci said, adding that D'Incecco made good on her promise to call her back in six months. At the second meeting, with Mrs. D'Incecco, show creator Agnes Nixon and other producers in attendance, Lucci won the part of Erica Kane.

Fantasy Island remake in the works at ABC with a female lead
Written by Sheldon Turner, the new take goes further in shaking up the original concept — about a tropical island where people pay to go and live out their fantasies — than the 1998 revival, also on ABC. Gone is the island where both series were set, with Fantasy Island as the name of a company that designs and executes fantasies for clients. In another major change, the enigmatic Fantasy Island owner Mr. Roarke, played by Ricardo Montalban and Malcolm McDowell in the two previous versions, will be a woman. The new Fantasy Island centers on a brilliant, dynamic and sexy woman who runs a San Francisco-based company that provides clients with his or her most intimate, dark or outlandish fantasy. NEWS: McKenzie Westmore, Kelly Ripa, Blair Underwood, Andrew Benjamin, Lucy Lawless

McKenzie Westmore fondly recalls spending her twenties as Sheridan on Passions
With kidnappings, Bollywood dance numbers and plenty of blackmail, McKenzie says she and the rest of the cast got a daily dose of "WTF" whenever they got their new scripts.

"The more controversy, the worse you could get it, we did it," she says, recalling one particular storyline that found Sheridan communicating with the ghost of Princess Diana after surviving a crash similar to the one that killed the late royal.

"I remember when the whole Princess Diana thing happened, watching it and going 'Oh my god, I just started my career and now it's over. Thats the end. I just trashed the whole memory of Princess Diana," she continues.

Looking back, Westmore says she saw the beginning of the end coming when the show began what she calls its "worst storyline ever."

"I remember when it moved to DirecTV and they were doing the storyline of Julian Crane and Dr. Eve and his penis had been cut off and she sewed it on backwards," she says with a laugh. "I remember watching this episode, as he's peeing all over the place because he couldn't control his bladder and I went 'This has got to be the worst storyline ever done, what are they doing?'"

Are late-night talk shows doomed to go the way of soaps?
Writes Robert Rorke in the New York Post: In 2015, only four soaps remain: Days of our Lives on NBC, General Hospital on ABC, and The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful on CBS. Of the quartet, Y&R has the biggest audience, with 4.8 million viewers, while Days and GH perform on a par with Kimmel, and B&B does as well as Fallon.
