Today in Soap Opera History (December 9)

On this date in...

1914: Future soap legend Frances Reid was born (PORTIA FACES LIFE; AS THE WORLD TURNS; DAYS OF OUR LIVES). She died on February 3, 2010.

1949: On THE GUIDING LIGHT, Bert Miller (Ann Shepherd) married Bill Bauer (Lyle Sudrow).

1957: On THE EDGE OF NIGHT, Dalton blasted DA Thompson on TV for having an affair with Ruth Sherman.

1960: CORONATION STREET, created by Tony Warren, premiered. It is now the longest running active television soap opera in the world. After the first episode, a columnist in the Daily Mirror claimed the series would only last three weeks.  Radio's THE ARCHERS is the current longest running active soap opera.

STORY:
Megan was the daughter Viki (Erika Slezak) had in high school but forgot about, thanks to Victor.  Megan was the star of FRATERNITY ROW and clashed with Viki but eventually the two developed a close relationship.  Jake came to Llanview trying to clear his name.  Over the course of the next year, Michael Grande was murdered and Jake and Megan were suspected.  The two fell in love but faced many obstacles on the road to romance including Carlo Hesser (Thom Christopher), who blackmailed Jake into marrying his daughter, Charlotte (Audrey Landers).  Eventually Jake and Megan were married.

1991: On THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS, Jack tried to get Nikki into rehab.

CASTING EXCLUSIVE: Surprise Recast on THE BAY (Paul Satterfield replaces Joe Lando)

When indie soap hit THE BAY kicks off Season 2 the character of Lee Nelson will have a different look. Paul Satterfield has replaced Joe Lando in the pivotal role.

A tall, handsome television veteran, Satterfield has appeared in a number of series in both primetime and daytime. His daytime work includes the soaps GENERAL HOSPITAL (Paul), THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL (Pierce) and, most recently, ONE LIFE TO LIVE (Spencer).

A familiar face in primetime as well, his many credits include guest stints on WILL & GRACE and PROFILER, as well as roles in Aaron Spelling's SAVANNAH (Tom) and PACIFIC PALISADES (John).
