Bend Over Daytime: 'Dropping the Soap' Now Streaming

Newly released web series Dropping the Soap goes behind-the-scenes of a daytime soap opera struggling to survive in the new era of television. When Olivia Vanderstein, the new Head of the Network played by Emmy Award-winning Glee star Jane Lynch, wants to shake things up on the long-running soap opera Colliding Lives, she tries every gimmick in the book. The result is a no-holds barred, every-hack-for-himself, fight for survival led by Julian Drake, the soap’s leading star of questionable talent and moral compass, played by Paul Witten.

Lynch's Olivia utters lines like, "You look so handsome, virile, exactly what a soap star needs to be."

“As the TV soap opera itself circles the drain, I love how our crew of self-centered and desperate actors charge ever forward to save their show from the chopping block,” Lynch said in a press release, when the concept of the show was first announced in 2013. “The writing is so sharp and witty as the off-screen shenanigans become almost more absurd than the storylines of Colliding Lives. Simply put, it is pure joy working with this group of hilarious and smart people.”

The show is executive produced by Witten, Lynch, Kate Mines Mandy Fabian and Ellie Kanner.

A number of familiar faces appear during the 10=episode first season including Nadia Bjorlin, Dot-Marie Jones, Dot-Marie Jones, Missi Pyle and Ben Baur.

NEWS: Showbiz411 Takes Aim at Michelle Stafford & Her Web Series With 'Scientology Pals'; Wentworth Miller Comes Out & Turns Down Russian Festival

Showbiz411: Y&R Star Leaves Show to Make YouTube Series with Scientology Pals
Roger Friedman has never held back in his columns and goes full throttle in an "exclusive" new story about Michelle Stafford's exit from THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS and her new web series THE STAFFORD PROJECT, and it all revolves his apparent disdain for Scientology. Here are a few quotes:

"So what did Stafford leave for? To make a YouTube series with her Scientology pals"

"But what 'The Stafford Project' hasn't addressed yet is that everyone involved in it is a Scientologist."

"Stafford has been with Scientology since 1990, and has worked her way up to OTVII, which means she may have secret information about desert rendezvous with aliens."

EDITOR'S NOTE: Stafford's web series, THE STAFFORD PROJECT, is quite funny and, if video views are any indication, a smash hit already.

ABC Developing Murder Trial Drama From Kelly Masterson & Prospect Park
The network has given a script commitment plus penalty to LIMELIGHT, a drama project from writer-playwright Kelly Masterson who is executive producing with Prospect Park’s Jeff Kwatinetz and Josh Barry.

ABC and Prospect Park too are involved in litigation, a $25 million case over soaps ALL MY CHILDREN and ONE LIFE TO LIVE.

Disney's ABC TV Unit Laying Off 175
The layoffs amount to about 2 percent of the unit, which employs 7,600. Insiders say the layoffs will largely hit the eight owned and operated TV stations housed in Disney's ABC Television Group. The company has eight owned stations in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Houston, Raleigh Durham and Fresno.

NEWS: New Sheriff Lamb For 'Veronica Mars' Movie; Deidre Hall at 'She' Expo; 'Legacy Falls' Premieres; HOUSE OF CARDS Less Than 1 Percent of Shows Viewed on Netflix; Jane Lynch on Cory Monteith

The Veronica Mars Movie Adds Sheriff Lamb – But It's Not Y&R's Michael Muhney
Jerry O’Connell will play Sheriff Lamb — “No, not that Sheriff Lamb,” he clarifies in a YouTube video to fans – in Veronica Mars‘ upcoming feature-film adaptation.

He will take on the role of Dan Lamb, “a new Lamb brother I hope you love to hate,” creator Rob Thomas writes in an email to the film’s Kickstarter contributors.

Marshmallows will remember that Dan’s brother Don (played by THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS' Michael Muhney) — aka the insensitive lawman who famously told a rufie’d Veronica to “Go see the Wizard. Ask for a little backbone.” — died in Season 3 from head trauma incurred while responding to a call.

'She: An Expo for Women' adds DAYS OF OUR LIVES star Deidre Hall to lineup
Two more stars are coming to Chattanooga for "The Ultimate Girls' Weekend Out."

THE DOCTORS physician Travis Stork and DAYS star Deidre Hall are the newest additions to 'She: An Expo for Women' on July 27 and 28 at the Chattanooga Convention Center.

"Both Deidre and Travis are great additions to round out this year's She Expo," said Jason Taylor, president and general manager of the Chattanooga Times Free Press. "Deidre is a legend in daytime television with a huge following in our area, while Travis brings an entertaining, fun approach to living a healthier, more fulfilling life. She Expo will definitely have a little something for all the women in attendance."

The duo of television personalities will take the stage July 28. At 2:45 p.m., Hall will take photos with fans and sign books available for purchase on-site, while Stork will give a speech and take audience questions at 4 p.m.

Lindze Letherman on her GENERAL HOSPITAL return
"Georgie and Maxie have always had such a strong bond and Georgie was always a conscience for Maxie when she wasn't one for herself," says Letherman. "She was always the person who could get through to Maxie and be that voice of reason and that kind of compass. Nobody else could do that for her. But Maxie put the strength in Georgie, too, to take the risks that she would never take. So they really were counterbalances for each other. That's why their relationship was so wonderful."

"Legacy Falls": Daytime Soap Opera Parody Musical Hits New York Musical Theatre Festival
The show, which premiered July 16 as part of the New York Musical Theatre Festival, takes a no-holds-barred (if facetious) approach to the popular television medium. Taking its title from the name of a fictional American program, “Legacy Falls” promises to “dish the dirt on soaps,” skewering all the hirings, firings and behind-the-scenes catfights between co-stars, some of whom are hiding little secrets of their own.

“Legacy Falls,” which features DAYS alum Kevin Spirtas in its cast, may seem like a winning format for a reality series, but according to composer-lyricist James Burn, daytime dramas provided ample source material “ideally suited” for musical theater, particularly in a show intended as a satire.

MAD MEN Trumps HOUSE OF CARDS on Netflix
A study, by research firm GfK, found that HOUSE OF CARDS accounted for less than 1% of TV shows viewed by regular Netflix users during a week in April. By comparison, old episodes of hit dramas BREAKING BAD and MAD MEN each got 3% of total viewership while the canceled NBC drama "Heroes" and the Fox comedy "Family Guy" each got a 2% share.

Jane Lynch Talks Cory Monteith Death: "We've Lost a Really Great Guy"—Watch the Emotional Clip
An emotional Jane Lynch talked about losing a man she referred to as a "really great guy" while appearing on THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH JAY LENO this evening.

"Cory's one of the biggest hearts, was a real bright light. He was one of those guys that…you know, he knew he was breathing rarified air…the gifts that this wonderful show gave us," she told the audience.

"He was always aware that it was a gift and he was quite generous. He was one of those adventurous types of those people. I always admired how he would get up…you know, he would fly to Mexico, he'd throw parties for his friends. I don't think he left one day unlived. He was a real bright light in our family and we've lost a really great guy."

And that's exactly how Lynch hopes the GLEE star will be remembered.

"He once flew across the country on his own nickel to meet with a sick kid [whose] last wish was to meet him. That's just the kind of guy he was. Just a real giver."
