The New York Times published a wonderful piece on Friday about the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and how a live episode of AS THE WORLD TURNS was interrupted the afternoon of Nov. 22, 1963. At the moment of the assassination, the show was the only regular program being broadcast nationally by a major network — specifically, throughout the Eastern and Central time zones."

Don Hastings (Bob Hughes) was interviewed by the Times and recalled overhearing a cameraman say to someone in the control room, "Don’t tell the actors what? The president’s been shot?"

AS THE WORLD TURNS was airing on CBS the afternoon of November 22, 1963, when Walter Cronkite broke in to tell the nation that President John F. Kennedy had been shot. Coverage then went back to the top-rated soap opera, but not for long.

CBSNews.com will stream CBS News' historic broadcast coverage of President Kennedy's assassination to mark the 50th anniversary of the shooting. CBSNews.com's special four-day anniversary online stream will begin at 1:38 PM ET on Friday, Nov. 22, 2013 with the first breaking network television news bulletin alerting viewers shots had been fired in Dallas.
