The latest actor to join the cast of the upcoming REALITY BYTES is Jered Allen, who will play Ben. We Love Soaps caught up with Allen and he revealed that he had been a fan of creator Tristan Rogers from his GENERAL HOSPITAL days: "As a kid back home on my TV all we had was about five channels - a couple of sports channels, the news and soap operas. We enjoyed watching him and it's kind of funny that one day I'd get to meet him and be in something he's involved with." Look for our complete interview soon. Fans has submitted scripts for BEYOND REASON, the soap within the soap on REALITY BYTES. More details on that will be coming soon.

Several cast members from ANACOSTIA - Anthony Anderson, Kena Hodges, Tamieka Chavis, Chanté Bowser and Pasha Diallo - were in New York over the weekend and taped an episode of WE LOVE SOAPS TV which will be released next week. They discussed the recently concluded Season One and offered previews for Season Two.

ANYONE BUT ME returned with an all new episode on February 23 featuring Liza Weil from GOSSIP GIRL. The show received three nomination for the Streamy Awards including Best Writing, Best Directing and Best Actress in a Drama Series (Rachael Hip-Flores).

VENICE will air its Season One finale on Friday. Subscriptions for Season One will terminate on Saturday, May 1st. Season Two is in pre-production now. Star Crystal Chappell has been nominated for a Streamy Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series for the role of Gina.

ANACOSTIA has aired its season finale but the cast is still making the press rounds. Look for interviews coming up on DCTV next Thursday and Saturday. Also, Indie Soap Award nominee Anthony Anderson and company will be in New York on Saturday taping an appearance for an upcoming episode of WE LOVE SOAPS TV.

STEAMBOAT released a trailer and the first episode last week and fans seem to like it so far. INDIE SOAP BEAT: July 22, 2009

On Tuesday's "We Love Soaps Radio" podcast, we aired our latest "Indie Soap Beat" segment. That segment will be included every week and will feature interviews with cast and behind the scenes folks from the world of independent soap opera production. We also produce a weekly column on the website and you will find it below.

Here's a rundown of some of the latest news from the indie soap world.

CHICAGO TO CORONADO
CHICAGO TO CORONADO is a Twitter romance/suspense soap opera written in 140 word soundbytes. The storyline follows a culturally-challenged Chicago to Coronado transplant – a former Prada-heeled agency CEO, noted feminist, Economic Club of Chicago member and Entrepreneur Magazine writer thrust into a world of Navy SEALs and flipflops. On this week's episode "We Love Soaps Radio," Vanessa Shoemaker, Director of Operations and Sponsorship for the show, appeared to explain how the idea for C2C came about.

Shoemaker also offered some additional commentary on the show: "Our message is universal. Absolutely anything is possible in life. The power of reinvention lies within us."

News Round-up: Paolo Seganti, Anistons, Jerry Douglas

INTERVIEW: ATWT's Paolo Seganti (Damian)
"When I first came on the show I barely spoke English. I enjoyed the beginning so much, and then I didn’t. I was doing theatre and kind of burnt out, and then I started enjoying it again. I remember in the beginning, having a great time with Martha and Nick Coster and Liz Hubbard (Lucinda). That was good and fun. Back in those days, we had more time to shoot and mess around between scenes and unwind, so you could do your best. Now it’s faster. I think the best stuff was the last couple of times I came to the show, because at the beginning, I was just learning. Two and half years ago, and before that, six years ago with the storylines, I was becoming a more experienced actor. I would say probably the last time I was here at ATWT with Luke was great. Working off of Van is great. He was such a generous actor. On the right day, I am that way, too. We had a good time, and I am so looking forward to working with him again."

Y&R's Jerry Douglas selling home for $3,999,000
Douglas and wife Kym have listed their 4,400-square-foot Cape Cod-style home in Encino at $3,999,000.

Jennifer Aniston voicing kids' book with dad John
Speaking to the New York Daily News, a representative for Jennifer Aniston said: "It is a wonderful story, plain and simple. She did it because she wanted to do it with her dad, as well as she loved the story."

DEEP SOAP: A Tale of Two Genre Channels
Sara Bibel writes: "I’ve written a lot of columns railing against SOAPnet’s seeming aversion to soap programming. Now I’m starting to think that I’ve been unfair. Apparently, this sort of stupidity is endemic to the cable industry. This week the Sci-Fi channel announced that it’s changing it’s name to SyFy in an attempt at 'rebranding.'"

News Round-up

Regime change at CW's 90210
Rebecca Rand Kirshner Sinclair is taking a permanent residence in the 90210 ZIP code. On the heels of the freshman CW show's renewal, Sinclair has inked a new seven-figure deal with 90210 producer CBS Par and has been tapped to serve as executive producer/showrunner on the high school drama for the next two seasons.

Sinclair joined 90210 as an exec producer in September, when she inked a two-year overall deal with CBS Par. Under the pact, she was to run the writers room this season, working alongside exec producers/showrunners Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah, then segue into development while serving as a consultant if 90210 returned for a sophomore year. With her new deal, Sinclair has been given the show's reins through the 2010-11 season. Sachs and Judah likely will depart at the end of this season.

Betrothal follows betrayals on Y&R
The good news is that Billy asks the mother of his new baby to marry him Friday on "The Young and the Restless."

The bad news is that she is still married to his brother.

"Billy wants to man up," Billy Miller, who plays the part, tells the New York Daily News. "He found a conscience somewhere between whoring and drinking. He wants his kid."

Even if he is not in love with her mother.

"What's love?" says the actor. "Billy loves a lot of people. Right now, he is in love with his daughter."

And he just had sex with his brother Jack's wife, Sharon.

"Yeah, he may have a couple of broken noses coming to him," says Miller.

Paul Anthony Stewart's "Crime and Punishment" begins tonight
Stewart (ex-Danny, GUIDING LIGHT) stars as Raskolnikov in the Cleveland Play House production, with Lethia Hall as Sonia and Patrick Husted as Porfiry.

AMC lesbian wedding storyline makes history — and mistakes
Sarah Warn, AfterEllen's Editor in Chief writes: "Many queer and straight viewers began heading for the door when it became clear that the kisses and the wedding plans were just new ways to dress up the same old depressing and boring lesbian storylines about sperm donors, custody battles, and sexually confused lesbians. And we already get enough of that on primetime TV."

Web soap explores gay safe sex in a post-Prop 8 world with four new episodes launching this spring
The boys are back! The L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center's online soap opera, IN THE MOMENT, returns with four new "webisodes" following the lives of several young gay men living in West Hollywood as they face difficult decisions about relationships, politics, drugs and sex. This season, which features a cameo by Darryl Stephens of NOAH'S ARC, includes up-to-the-moment topics such as Prop 8.

The new webisodes arrive amidst growing concerns regarding the rising HIV-infection rate among our nation's youth. New York City health officials recently reported that new HIV infections among young gay and bisexual men have risen 32 percent in recent years, in contrast to an overall drop for men older than 30.

"More and more young people are watching video content online, and more and more young gay guys describe meeting people on the web for dating and sex," says independent filmmaker Dave O'Brien, 31, who wrote, directed and co-developed In the Moment. "We had to create something that would tap into that, and do it in a way that wasn't about shaming people for their behavior. We wanted to create something that was about starting a conversation...bringing all of us together to help stop the spread of HIV."

News Brief

HOLLYOAKS' Emma 'depressed' by anorexia role
HOLLYOAKS star Emma Rigby has admitted that playing an anorexic was really upsetting. The 18-year-old actress - who plays schoolgirl Hannah Ashworth in the Channel 4 soap - won the British Soap Awards for Best Actress but admitted the role was emotionally draining.

Emma told New! magazine: "I just threw myself into it, really. I didn't want it to be unrealistic or disrespectful to people who suffer from the illness and I didn't want to glamorise it, either. There was a time when I was feeling really, really tired at work and it was really upsetting. But afterwards, I'd have the support of my family. Actors who weren't in scenes with me would come up to me during the day and say, 'Oh my God! You look awful.' I had so many people saying I looked awful, I started to feel really tired and depressed."

INTERVIEW: PASSIONS' Hector Luis Bustamante
Of all the projects he has going on he admits that the daytime drama was a big challenge.

“Every actor has to do three scripts a day and you only have one take so it’s a lot of work! It made me a better actor and hats off to everyone who works on soaps everyday,” Bustamante said, saying that any job is a good job too. “As actors we have to be balanced and understanding and sometimes its just waiting, like going to the amusement park. Why stop in a line that takes two hours? Because there’s an amazing ride at the end and that’s exactly acting. You wait to get to the front of the line to get the ride of your life.”

Gays in "loved-up lather" over UK soap stars
A poll conducted by gay-PARSHIP.co.uk revealed how gay singles romantically rank kitchen sink stars. Results reveal that CORONATION STREET gets most lonely hearts fluttering.

VIDEO: Catching Up With Renee Elise Goldsberry
Soap Opera Digest's Bryan Beckley recently sat down with Renee Elise Goldsberry (ex-Evangeline, OLTL), who is currently playing Mimi in "Rent" on Broadway. She is part of the final cast — the show closes September 7 — which performed hits from the show in Bryant Park in New York City on August 14th.

GL's Chamberlain loves her kettlebells
Beth Chamberlain (Beth, GUIDING LIGHT) started using her kettlebell a year ago February. Her triceps and abdomen were the first areas to show change.

"Six weeks after I started, I did not recognize my body," said Chamberlain during a phone interview. "My body had always looked the same. I was 44 and giving up on exercise, but then my husband started working out with kettlebells."

Chamberlain started with a 12-pound bell and has worked up to 18 pounds. The routine she follows, created by Indianapolis Colts trainer Anthony DiLuglio, consists of 14 two-minute exercises. It affords a total-body workout.

"I aim for three times a week," she said. "You don't need to do another thing. I had a very hard time sticking with weight training. Here, you don't have to switch weights. You use the same weight throughout."

Gay online soap has a serious message
From its opening scene, the online soap opera IN THE MOMENT pulls no punches -- because, its creators say, it cannot. The show, which has drawn tens of thousands of viewers in the last few months, is a racy, unvarnished portrait of gay L.A. It is also, at its core, about HIV and AIDS.

Kelli Maroney on her RYAN'S HOPE days
"I was a bad character [on RYAN'S HOPE]. I was evil. I was always the girl you love to hate on the soaps. So when I got out here, you know, the characters I’d play in the B-movies were much more sympathetic. So that was fine when I was a kid to be a character that people hated. You know, people used to come up to me on the street and say, ‘…you’re so bad, you’d better stop that right now.’ [Laughing] And to this day on those message boards… I mean most of them realize… they want you to drop by, you know, on the message boards. The things that they have to say about you are so unflattering that you don’t feel like going."

L.A. Times Examines Online Soap Opera That Aims To Raise HIV Awareness Among MSM
The Los Angeles Times on Friday examined an online soap opera that aims to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and promote safer-sex practices among men who have sex with men. According to the Times, the show is part of a "wave of new programs" that aims to "reinvigorate" HIV/AIDS outreach in the MSM community.

The show, called IN THE MOMENT, is a "racy, unvarnished portrait" of MSM in Los Angeles, but "at its core" is about HIV/AIDS, the Times reports. The first episode was released in January and introduced the multicultural cast, including two characters named Mike and Steve who have unprotected sex. Look Out: Old Laura Is Back on GH
Jennifer Kate blogs on the return of Genie Francis as Laura: "Although I am happy she’s working again, I still have mixed feelings about Luke and Laura. I think I always will. For although GH has tried to make up for it, nothing can make up for the fact that one night, Luke Spencer emotionally and physically raped Laura Baldwin. You can’t tape over the fact she said no. It’s not something that can’t be erased."
