Lin Bolen Dead at 76

Bolen worked for NBC in the 1970s and was responsible for commissioning the long-running game show Wheel of Fortune. She also is credited with bringing long-form narrative to soap operas, expanding them to hour-long formats.
It was long rumored that the ruthless Faye Dunaway character of Diana Christiansen in the 1976 satirical film Network was based on Bolen, something Bolen denied.
She was appointed VP of daytime programming at NBC in 1972, rising to become the VP of programming in Sept. 1975. NBC thrived under her leadership, becoming the No. 1 network in ratings.
She launched NBC soap opera How to Survive a Marriage in 1974, and extended Another World and Days of our Lives to an hour from 30 minutes in 1975 to allow for more complex plots.

Steve Elmore Dead at 84

Born in Niangua, Missouri, Elmore appeared on Broadway nine times, taking on roles as sea captains, cops, lawyers, and once—as a cowboy. He appeared in the ensemble of the Mary Martin musical "Jennie" in 1963, and in the Carol Burnett musical "Fade Out—Fade In" in 1964. He began his rise in 1969 after playing Hennessy/The Captain in the original Off-Broadway company of "Dames at Sea" opposite Bernadette Peters.
In 1970, he originated the role of Paul in the 1970 Stephen Sondheim-George Furth musical "Company. The character Paul is the soon-to-be (or not-so-soon-to-"be) bridegroom of the hyper-nervous Amy; the two sing in the memorable three-part patter song "(Not) Getting Married Today."
After "Company," Elmore worked in TV—mainly in soap operas, dramas, and commercials—and often returned to the stage. He assumed the lead role of lawyer Billy Flynn from Jerry Orbach during the original run of "Chicago," and again stepped into Orbach’s shoes in the role of director Julian Marsh during the original production of "42nd Street." "Chicago" director Bob Fosse also chose Elmore to appear in the ensemble of his 1979 film musical "All That Jazz."

He also had a busy New York nightclub career, appearing regularly at the St. Regis Hotel’s King Cole Room with leading ladies Patrice Munsel, Marni Nixon, and Martha Wright. Lyricist E. Y. Harburg (“Over the Rainbow”) especially admired his respect for the words of songs, and dubbed him “the lyricist’s guardian angel,” says his wife.
His final Broadway appearance came in April 1993 in a two-performance concert celebration of "Company" that reunited the original cast.
In addition to his wife, Elmore is survived by his son, Stuart Elmore; two daughters, Stephana Sherwood and Susan Elmore; his daughter-in-law, Michele Burdette Elmore; and four grandchildren.
A private memorial is planned for New York City in January.
Below, watch Beth Howland with Steve Elmore, Teri Ralston and cast sing "Getting Married Today" from the original broadway cast of Sondheim's "Company" in 1970.

FLASHBACK: A Complete, Concise Yearly History of TV Soap Operas - 1947 to 1977 (Part 8 of 8)

The Soap Box
Vol. III No. 10 September 1978
by John Genovese
(continued from Part 7)
1973
When CBS axed Where the Heart Is and Splendored Thing, it was able to premiere a project that had been in the works for a long time. On March 26, The Young and the Restless appeared to revolutionize the business with its young, beautiful cast, romantic fairytale storylines, and top-flight production values from Television City in Hollywood. Creator William J. Bell and producer John Conboy made household idols of Trish Stewart, William Gray Espy, James Houghton, Tom Hallick and Janice Lynde, all of whom have since departed. The show, still the intense and sensuous story of the middle class Brooks family and the dirt-poor Foster clan of Genoa City, Wisconsin, still claims Robert Colbert (Stuart Brooks), Julianna McCarthy (Liz Foster) and Brenda Dickson (Jill Foster) from its originals.

FLASHBACK: Bill & Susan Seaforth Hayes Cover Time Magazine's Sex and Suffering in the Afternoon Issue (1976)

TIME Magazine
January 12, 1976
Sometimes it seems that there is no escape from the world of soap opera. Eileen Fulton, who has played the wicked Lisa on As the World Turns for 16 years, was punched in front of Manhattan's Lord & Taylor by an irate fellow shopper who had confused the TV screen with real life. Said Fulton: "At first I thought she wanted my autograph."
An actor on the mystery soap Edge of Night was asked by a physician to stop killing off characters. One of the doctor's patients, a 94-year-old woman, was suffering agony over the deaths of so many people whom she felt she knew.
A few years ago, CBS was obliged to eliminate soap opera characters who were poor because the network was receiving piles of care packages. When Susan Seaforth Hayes as Julie of Days of our Lives mulled over an abortion, she was mailed pictures of fetuses. And the endlessly frustrated romance of Alice Matthews and Steve Frame drove fans of Another World crazy.
"Why don't you let them get married?" wailed one viewer. "Four times I've bought a new dress for the wedding. Four times I've bought champagne."
