'General Hospital' Star Maurice Benard Included in "Deconstructing Stigma" Exhibit at Logan Airport

Maurice, 53
A photograph of General Hospital Emmy winning actor Maurice Benard is one of 34 pictures lining the 235-foot-long hallway between Terminals B and C at Logan Airport in Boston, part of an exhibit that debuted last week called "Deconstructing Stigma: A Change in Thought Can Change a Life." Superimposed on each photograph is text describing the person’s struggle with mental illness.

Diagnosed with bipolar disorder when he was 22, Benard (Sonny Corinthos on GH) remembers being hospitalized —at times being so manic, he suffered from psychosis. Like many people, Maurice has to take medication daily to remain healthy.

"I have been on medication for the last 30 years, and I learned a long time ago that those medications are what help me stay balanced. Otherwise, bipolar takes hold and I become someone I don’t want to be. When I take my medication, everything is great. When I don’t, it’s a problem."

Emmy winning former One Life to Live and General Hospital star Kristen Alderson has provided an update on the condition of her brother (and former OLTL co-star), Eddie Alderson, who announced he had cancer on Monday morning.

"My beyond precious and amazing brother (and best friend) @eddiealderson go diagnosed with Lymphoma Cancer last Friday. Ever since, we've been surrounded by love, support, and optimism. He is so strong and determined, I know he'll beat this. Please pray for Eddie's journey w/ us. I'll keep you updated as always."

Kristen later posted another update announcing Eddie had been diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma.

"The power of prayer is AMAZING! As of this morning Eddie was scheduled for surgery tonight. They said his first biopsy didn't have enough tissue to determine the exact kind of lymphoma. This would've pushed back his diagnoses/treatment and would've meant more time in the hospital. Only 4 hours after he announced his cancer (and you all responded with beautiful words and prayer) the doctor came in and said he no longer needed surgery! They were able to diagnose him using the sample they already had. (GREAT news) AND he he officially has Hodgkins Lymphoma (which is very treatable). He's going home today and will start chemotherapy on Monday."

Emmy nominated actress Kassie DePaiva has revealed that she is battling acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Best known for her portrayal of Blair Cramer on One Life to Live, and her work as Chelsea Reardon on Guiding Light, she most recently starred as Eve Donovan on Days of our Lives. Below is the message from DePaiva that was posted on her website on Thursday.

I know that I have been quiet lately and I want to let you know what's been going on in my life. I was asked back to play Eve on Days and had begun my exciting return. During the 3 week July hiatus I was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and have spent 6 of the last 9 weeks in the hospital. I will continue treatment over the next 3 months. My prognosis is good, I will not likely need a stem cell/bone marrow transplant, and we expect a complete cure. I consider this just a bump in the road. I have amazing prayer warriors, family, and friends that have been extremely supportive and life affirming throughout this.

I have a strong faith that strengthens me every step of the way. This has been a private matter but with Eve's return coming soon I felt it was time to let my loving fans know what's been going on. The Days and OLTL family love runs deep. Although I'm unable to be "camera ready" now... my goal is get back to stirring up trouble in Salem soon. Keep me in you thoughts and prayers.

Leukemia remains a rare disease and there is a great need for funding and donations of Stem Cells/Bone Marrow, Platelets and blood. If you would like to contribute in some way please go to Cornellleukemia.com and join or contribute to the Leukemia Fighters group you will find on their website. You can also join their Facebook page. There is a tremendous need to find exact matches for stem cell/ bone marrow. If you would like to make a difference in someone's survival please go to BeTheMatch.org and find out how you can be a donor. If you would like to donate blood or platelets which Leukemia patients need a lot of, please contact your local blood bank or American Red Cross.

God's got this!

Until next time… Kassie
According to cancer.gov, "adult acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow. This type of cancer usually gets worse quickly if it is not treated. It is the most common type of acute leukemia in adults. AML is also called acute myelogenous leukemia, acute myeloblastic leukemia, acute granulocytic leukemia, and acute nonlymphocytic leukemia.

"In AML, the myeloid stem cells usually become a type of immature white blood cell called myeloblasts (or myeloid blasts). The myeloblasts in AML are abnormal and do not become healthy white blood cells. Sometimes in AML, too many stem cells become abnormal red blood cells or platelets. These abnormal white blood cells, red blood cells, or platelets are also called leukemia cells or blasts. Leukemia cells can build up in the bone marrow and blood so there is less room for healthy white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. When this happens, infection, anemia, or easy bleeding may occur. The leukemia cells can spread outside the blood to other parts of the body, including the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord), skin, and gums."

We Love Soaps wishes the divine Ms. DePaiva all the best, and a complete, speedy recovery. We Love You, Kassie!

Wounded Eagle Flying: The Joseph Breen Story

Joseph Breen
During the late 1980s and early 190s, actor Joe Breen became a familiar face on daytime soap operas with starring roles as Paul Slavinsky on Loving, Will Jeffries in Guiding Light and Scott Eldridge on As the World Turns.

In 1993 he was fired from As the World Turns after the news surfaced in the National Enquirer that he was HIV-positive. Since then, Breen has stayed mostly out of the public eye, other than a 1997 story in the The New York Times when he was living an AIDS hospice, and despite his marriage in 2006 to country music singer Carlene Carter.

Breen is now working on telling his story in the film Wounded Eagle Flying. He introduces the project with the following:

My name is Joseph Breen, and I was born in Westchester, NY in 1958. I'm an actor and a singer, a father and a husband, a brother and a son, and a man living with AIDS.

Before my diagnosis I had much success working in television in NYC, including starring roles in three different daytime soap operas, and also singing and acting in the theater world. Then my story took a dramatic turn when I became infected with the HIV/AIDS virus. My life, my entire world, changed forever.

Thirty years on, I'm asking and reflecting on how I got from there to here, how I can make sense of the lost years. Mine is a story of survival which I'd like to share so that others can take heart and know that even wounded eagles can learn to fly again.

On this site you'll find a short video which will put you on the inside of my journey of survival -- from diagnosis to learning how to paraglide off the Alps. Yes, paraglide off the Alps! And a proposal of what the full-length documentary, when complete, will reveal not only about my journey with this illness, first hand, but also my journey back to gratitude.

My intention is to 'fly high' above my fears and illusions about illness, about life and about death, and to share my story with others.

'General Hospital' Star Maurice Benard Discussed His Bipolar Disorder with Dr. Oz (Video)

Dr. Oz and Maurice Benard
General Hospital star Maurice Benard appeared Thursday on The Dr. Oz Show to discuss his struggle with bipolar disorder.

The Emmy winner told Dr. Oz that he kept it to himself early in his career.

“The reason I didn’t talk about it was a few people had told me if I tell people I’m bipolar, I’m not gonna get hired as an actor,” Benard said.

Bernard discussed his bipolar disorder in an interview, and was later moved when he received a letter from a boy who had found inspiration in his words after his brother killed himself.

“So I decided that’s more important than any directors hiring me,” Benard explained. “People need to know about these things because people do die.”

Benard also revealed he was put into a mental institution as a teenager where he found himself tied down with restraints and was desperate to escape. After pulling a latch off of the wall, he even considered slitting his wrists to end his life.

“And I started praying, 'God help me,'” he remembered. “And I took the latch, bent it and made it into a cross and put it by my bed.”
