'Seeing is Believing: Women Direct' Makes East Coast Premiere on June 19

Emmy winning actress-turned-director Cady McClain's Seeing is Believing: Women Direct will make its East Coast Premiere and is an Official Selection of the 2017 SOHO International Film Festival, screening Monday, June 19 at Village East Cinemas.

Seeing is Believing: Women Direct is a documentary series directed, executive produced, written and edited by Cady McClain about women directors who are on the front lines of the field: from major award winners and those in the vanguard of television and feature films, to graduate students and frustrated auteurs. The first episode recently made its World Premiere at Newport Beach Film Festival, where it won an Honorable Mention for Best Documentary Short. Now, McClain will debut a feature-length version at SOHO International Film Festival.

McClain has spent the past year traveling the globe, speaking to female directors of film and television and documenting their stories. The outcome is a feature film and a serialized documentary, providing insider access to the skills and tools needed to succeed as a woman in the directing field.

When only 1.9% of the top 100 films are directed by women, it is a symptom of a larger problem: an ingrained cultural bias against women’s ability to lead. McClain believes the best way to create change is to show proof that the bias is based on outdated and false ideas. Considering all aspects of the directing experience, the series will show how these women drive through obstacles creative, cultural and professional. The series is also intended to serve as peer-to-peer mentorship for anyone of any gender looking for guidance and real world experience as they pursue their dreams of becoming a visual storyteller.

Nelson Aspen Previews His "Full Circle" Return to Don't Tell Mama

Nelson Aspen returns to Don't Tell Mama in October.
Last October, international entertainment reporter Nelson Aspen performed at Don't Tell Mama in New York City for the first time in nearly 30 years, and created a fantastic night of music, comedy and showbiz scoops. He returns to the venue for a new series of shows starting October 7.

We Love Soaps spoke with the Search for Tomorrow alum about his new show, "Full Circle." Read our exclusive interview below to find out what he has planned.

WE LOVE SOAPS: We're just over a week away from the first of your three October shows at Don't Tell Mama. Last year's shows were so much fun. What can fans expect this time around?
NELSON ASPEN: ...even MORE fun! This show started as an afternoon at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival before moving on to be a concert performance at the Sydney Opera House and, then, a cabaret show here in New York City. It has evolved into a being a very tight variety show in the vein of Merv Griffin or Mike Douglas (for those of us old enough to remember them!). It's called "Full Circle" because, thematically, I bring the audience along for my journey from NYC in the 1980s, to Hollywood for more than 2 decades, and back again. All in about 70 minutes! Songs, stand-up, audience interaction and guest stars...there's something for everyone.

WE LOVE SOAPS: What special guests will be making appearances?
NELSON ASPEN: Two Broadway goddesses! Anita Gillette will be joining me October 7 and 14, Shelly Burch on Oct 21. Of course, don't be surprised to see some famous faces in the audience...who might just get pulled up on stage for an impromptu moment in the spotlight. There could be some "Where Are They Now" moments, too. Daytime TV has been such a huge part of my life for so long that its influence is well represented onstage and off. (I have a secret, subtle SFT tribute planned that only die-hard aficionados will notice...ha ha!)

"The Oakland Sisters," a new play by Emmy-winning Another World writer Harding Lemay, will get intimate New York reading. Stageplays Theatre Company will present the February 28 and 29 benefit readings that will be directed by Tom Ferriter.

The new play is characterized as a “family drama about four sisters bound by love and dependence upon each other. Upon the death of their father, the sisters inherit equal shares in the family timber business. When the youngest sister marries a French Canadian Catholic, her husband is rejected by the domineering oldest sister—whose irrational devotion to her younger sister leads to the destruction of the marriage and a custody battle over her children. The two middle sisters must choose whom to defend and whom to abandon.”

The cast will include Elizabeth Stiles, Ben McHugh, Aubrey Mae Davis, Chandon Jones, Kerry McGann, Andrew David Rabensteine and Andrew Gelles. Maureen Van Trease provides accompaniment.

Having written for television since 1968, Harding “Pete” Lemay is former head writer for the NBC daytime serial Another World, writer for Guiding Light, story consultant for One Life to Live, and the creator and head writer of the serial Lovers and Friends. Plays written for the stage include "Look At Any Man," "The Little Birds Fly," "The Joslyn Circle, Return Upriver," "From A Dark Land," "The Death of Eagles," "How He Became A Writer," "The Off Season" (all originally produced at New Dramatists), and "Escape Route." "From A Dark Land" received its European premiere at the National Theatre of Romania –Craiova, in a co-production with Stageplays Theatre Company. Daytime Alums Robert Newman and Yvonne Perry Star in 'Naked Influence' at Capital Repertory Theatre

Yvonne Perry and Robert Newman. Photo Credit: Douglas C. Liebig
Suzanne Bradbeer’s "Naked Influence," a new play about a woman’s singular journey, makes its world premiere at Capital Repertory Theatre, January 22-February 14. Two daytime drama alums will star: Guiding Light's Robert Newman and As the World Turns' Yvonne Perry.

In "Naked Influence," Lucy (played by Amanda Sykes) likes the money she makes as a stripper, as well as the command over her customers, the governmental sway of her hips. But she also likes her new beau, a handsome young D.C. cop who doesn’t know about her craft, hell, her calling. And she likes the idea of finally pursuing the English degree that whispered in her ear even before she began twirling the pole for tips. But when Dennis (Newman), a Washington power broker, steps into the club and walks into her life, everything changes.

Perry returns to theREP as Angie, the bar manager, housemom and former dancer who looks out for Lucy and keeps tabs on her regulars.

"Naked Influence," set, in large part, in an upscale gentleman’s club, shares with its forebear a unique tension, crisp dialogue and a keen eye for today’s social climate.

“This play puts polarizing forces together,” says theREP’s Producing Artistic Director Maggie Mancinelli-Cahill, who is also directing the show. “Lucy and Dennis both feel they have control of their lives, but their behavior, reckless to some eyes, puts them on a collision course with reality that is great theatre and food for thought."

Nelson Aspen Thrills at Sold-Out Don't Tell Mama Show, With Special Guest Anita Gillette

Nelson Aspen and Anita Gillette at Don't Tell Mama on October 2, 2015.
International entertainment reporter Nelson Aspen performed at Don't Tell Mama in New York City on Friday night for the first time in nearly 30 years. He brought back the music director from his '80s show, Gerry Dieffenbach, and created a fantastic night of music, comedy and showbiz scoops.

From his performances of everything from "Herb the Verb" and "Rhode Island Is Famous For You" to "I'm So Glad We Had This Time Together" and "Love Is All Around" (Theme Song from The Mary Tyler Moore Show), Aspen packed the evening with pop culture references that made the crowd cheer with laughter and joy. The audience absolutely loved singing along to "Three's Company, Too"!

Aspen's special guest was the Tony nominated Anita Gillette (Mona the mistress in Moonstruck, Tina Fey's mother in 30 Rock et al). Three decades after they met working on Search for Tomorrow, Aspen brought Gillette on stage for a story about working with Ethel Merman in "Gypsy" on Broadway, and a showstopping number that proved why she's the best cabaret performer in New York. Note: Gillette will next play Nick Offerman's mother in a Huntington Theatre Company production of "A Confederacy of Dunces" in Boston.

One of the packed room's favorite moments was when Aspen sang "You Take Me Away (to Another World)," with Dieffenbach playing Crystal Gayle to his Gary Morris during the chorus of the Another World theme song. It received extra loud cheers from the large assemblage of former Another World staffers who reunited to attend the show.

Melanie Mitchell In as Guest Star for Nelson Aspen's October 9 NYC Performance

Melanie Mitchell
"Today, the role of Colleen Zenk will be played by Melanie Mitchell." Well, not really, but busy As the World Turns fan favorite Colleen Zenk has had cancel her guest-spot at Nelson Aspen's October 9th Cabaret performance at Don't Tell Mama, and another of Nelson's fab friends will be stepping up to the plate for a star-turn.

Melanie Mitchell, with whom Nelson first worked in early 1980s musical theater (see pic), is a sought after voice over and commercial artist (you see her a thousand times a day celebrating her lower Cholesterol numbers in a Pharmaceutical ad for Crestor!) who has an extensive Off-Broadway and regional theatre resume with starring roles in shows like "Promises Promises," "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas," "Cabaret" and "Bells Are Ringing." Her perfect soprano voice shone in popular 'girl groups' like "The Girls Next Store," "The Secrets" and as one of the original members of "The Taffetas."

Melanie Mitchell and Nelson Aspen
In addition to providing various voices on the animated hit The Simpsons, Melanie was a recurring player in David Letterman's late night comedy troupe and popped up often as a Day Player on As the World Turns and Another World, usually taunting the heroine-of-the-moment. She's much sweeter in person as audiences will discover on October 9.

Nelson's October 2 opening night show with guest star Anita Gillette is now wait-listed and a few seats are left for October 9 and 16, so hurry and make your reservations soon for these performances. Famous faces, exclusive behind the scenes stories, comedy and music are all part of the fun as Nelson reflects on 30 years as a showbiz industry insider.

Zenk, who just finished a hugely successful run as Polly in a Nantucket production of "Other Desert Cities" will continue the role in a new Hudson Stage Company production of the show from October 16-31. Buy tickets for that here.

Karen Jacobsen to Join Nelson Aspen at October 16 Cabaret Show

Karen Jacobsen
Following Anita Gillette and Colleen Zenk, Nelson Aspen rounds out his trio of Cabaret guest stars with acclaimed singer/songwriter Karen Jacobsen, who will pop up in his October 16 performance at Don't Tell Mama.

Aussie born Jacobsen, dubbed "The Dashboard Diva" and "The GPS Girl" is best known to millions of drivers for her anonymous work as the voice of the navigational device "Siri," but wait til you hear her sing! (And, of course, there is a connection to the world of soaps: with her songs having been included on soundtracks to shows like Dawson's Creek and Passions.) Karen, also a sought after motivational speaker, is a popular cabaret singer on the NYC circuit, having recently performed at the Triad Theater.

"I met Karen through my work with Australian Television," Nelson says, "and we hit it off immediately. Much of my show is about the influences of TV and pop culture and she really 'gets' it. In fact, she's a bit of a modern-day Olivia Newton-John!"

To reserve your seats for one of Nelson's upcoming shows at Don't Tell Mama in New York, call (212) 757-0788 (after 4 p.m. daily) or visit donttellmamanyc.com. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for a 7 p.m. performance. Expect to see some other familiar faces in the audience.

Nelson Aspen Reveals Guest for Second NYC Show: Colleen Zenk

Nelson Aspen and Colleen Zenk
Last week, we told you that showbiz legend Anita Gillette would be joining Nelson Aspen for the first show of his 30th Anniversary NYC Cabaret Engagement, Friday October 2nd. Now we can tell you who will be joining him onstage for the second performance, Friday October 9th: fan favorite Colleen Zenk, three-time Emmy nominee for her 32-year run as Barbara Ryan on As the World Turns.

"Like Anita, Colleen is a tremendous fan and supporter of the cabaret genre in addition to being such a commanding and glamorous performer," Aspen tells We Love Soaps. "These shows are going to be like having audiences over to my place every Friday night for a party. Only I don't have to cook!"

The always busy Zenk is currently starring in Theatre Workshop of Nantucket’s production of "Other Desert Cities," running now until September 19.

"Anita is a living showbiz legend and I can't wait to have her be a part of my opening night at Don't Tell Mama," Aspen tells We Love Soaps. "She starred in the first Broadway musical I ever saw, 'They're Playing our Song,' and I grew up watching her on Quincy, Password and Match Game. She can do it all! We worked together briefly in the mid '80s on Search for Tomorrow and then she became a bona fide movie star with Moonstruck. We reunited a few years on a Red Carpet for 30 Rock (she played Tina Fey's mother) and became NYC neighbors...truly full circle.
