FOX 2018-2019 Programming Slate Revealed

On Monday, FOX unveiled the network's primetime slate for the 2018-2019 television season during its annual Programming Presentation at the Beacon Theatre.

"This year, we launched four of the Top 10 new shows on broadcast, which led to a very strong roster of young series returning for their sophomore seasons. That gives us tremendous momentum heading into the fall," said Newman and Walden. "With our increased investment in football, we're going to use the powerful platform of the NFL to launch our new comedies. We'll then take some big swings with dramas at midseason, which is a proven strategy for FOX."

The new comedies joining the lineup this fall are REL and THE COOL KIDS. Inspired by the life of Lil Rel Howery ("Get Out," "Insecure," "The Carmichael Show"), REL is a multi-camera comedy starring Howery as a loving husband and father living in Chicago, who finds out his wife is having an affair, and must rebuild his life as a single father, following his divorce. The comedy also stars Sinbad ("A Different World," "The Sinbad Show," "Jingle All The Way"), Jess "Hilarious" Moore ("Wild 'N Out") and Jordan L. Jones ("NCIS: Los Angeles," "Wisdom of the Crowd").

FOX Announces 2016-2017 Schedule

Dana Walden and Gary Newman, Chairmen and CEOs, Fox Television Group, unveiled the FOX primetime slate for the 2016-2017 television season today to the national advertising community during its annual Programming Presentation at the Beacon Theatre.

"Next season on FOX, we'll have more original programming across our schedule than ever before," said Walden and Newman. "We'll use our strong established hits in the fall and SUPER BOWL LI in winter to launch a diverse slate of shows that are unmistakably FOX. We're proud of our new series, directed and created by some of the most celebrated talent in the entertainment industry. And, we are pleased to be returning to our schedule many of our most beloved shows, including broadcast's No. 1 series, EMPIRE!"

The new dramas joining the schedule this fall are THE EXORCIST and LETHAL WEAPON. Widely regarded as the greatest horror movie ever made, Academy Award-nominated "The Exorcist" terrified audiences around the world. Now, more than four decades later, THE EXORCIST returns as a contemporary psychological TV thriller following two very different priests tackling one family's case of terrifying demonic possession. Directed by Rupert Wyatt ("Rise of the Planet of the Apes"), the series stars Alfonso Herrera ("Sense8," "The Chosen"), Ben Daniels ("Flesh and Bone," "House of Cards") and Academy Award and Golden Globe winner Geena Davis ("Commander in Chief," "Thelma & Louise").

Based on the hit movie franchise of the same name, LETHAL WEAPON follows iconic cop duo Riggs and Murtaugh, as they work a crime-ridden beat in modern-day Los Angeles. From the moment the brash and impulsive MARTIN RIGGS (Clayne Crawford, "Rectify") meets prudent, by-the-book ROGER MURTAUGH (Emmy Award nominee Damon Wayans, Sr., "My Wife and Kids," "In Living Color"), it seems as if this partnership is doomed. But after their first case together, both realize this arrangement might just work out after all - if only Riggs doesn't get them killed first.

The new comedy joining the Sunday night lineup this fall is hybrid live-action/animated family comedy SON OF ZORN. Featuring the voice of Jason Sudeikis (THE LAST MAN ON EARTH, "Horrible Bosses," "We're the Millers"), SON OF ZORN follows an animated warrior from a faraway island in the Pacific Ocean, who returns to Orange County, CA, to win back his live-action ex-wife (Cheryl Hines, "Curb Your Enthusiasm") and teenage son (Johnny Pemberton, "21 Jump Street").

Jane the Virgin's is portraying a radically frank depiction of early motherhood
“The truly radical thing about this season of Jane the Virgin,” says Kathryn VanArendonk, "has been how much of these first episodes have been about the unavoidable, unglamorous, and absolutely life-consuming physical reality of new motherhood. Jane Villanueva uses a breast pump. Frequently. She worries about her milk supply. Her body does not bounce back instantly. She is exhausted, and her baby’s presence is a new constant in her life.”

Robert Rorke complains that primetime's "high brow" dramas are turning into daytime soap operas
The New York Post writers says: "Bringing characters back from the dead? That’s the kind of plot device usually found on daytime drama to goose ratings and arouse sleepy fans. So when did shows such as Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead become soap operas on par with Days of our Lives, which famously brought back notorious villain Stefano DiMera (Joseph Mascolo) from the grave, or The Young and the Restless, which killed off Adam Newman and revived him — with another actor (Justin Hartley) playing the role?"

Is it time to kill "Fall TV"?
Writes Willa Paskin: "We're now four weeks into the network’s fall TV season. By current standards it was not a catastrophe. By real standards, it was hardly a success. Fall TV, in which dozens of shows are introduced to audiences in a matter of weeks, was once an effective and fun way to serve audiences new television shows. It is now ineffective and no fun. For reasons of structure and inertia, having to do with the development process and the selling of advertisements, it probably won’t change anytime soon."

Netflix exec: "There’s no such thing as too much TV"
Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos fired back at FX CEO John Landgraf’s assertion that we’ve reached peak TV. “There’s no such thing as too much TV,” Sarandos said today at an industry luncheon. “Unless we’re all spending more and not watching more. That’s not the case. The number of television [hours] we’re watching is growing dramatically.”

FOX wants $10M Empire lawsuit from "gangsta pimp" tossed
Calling Empire “a modern take on Shakespeare’s King Lear,” lawyers for the network on Thursday filed a motion to dismiss the copyright infringement lawsuit Ron Newt started in April – and the network is going for the jugular.

“Plaintiff claims that the hit Fox network television series Empire is substantially similar to his Works, and asserts claims for copyright infringement and breach of implied contract,” says the October 15 motion, which calls Newt a “self-described ‘gangsta pimp’ ” whose work “include detailed descriptions of cold-blooded killings, dismemberments, and crude descriptions of Plaintiff’s sexual escapades in graphic detail that would never be shown on network television.” Newt calls his tale that of a black man rising with “his three sons from the ghetto and a life of crime into the world of the music industry.”

Scandal took on Alessandra Stanley’s “Angry Black Woman” piece, and beautifully dismantled it
In the final few minutes of this week's episode, civil rights activist Marcus Walker, who has now joined the Olivia Pope Associates team as their PR spokesperson, is fed up with all of the coded language that has swirled around Olivia. After a reporter calls her “well-spoken”—a term often applied to “exceptional” black people that carries the implication that most of us speak in fractured Ebonics—he goes all in:

She’s usually so ‘well-spoken’ for a black woman, isn’t that what you meant? I say that because I’ve been looking at the last 72 hours of your station’s news coverage, and when you’re not suggesting Olivia Pope is an angry black woman, you’re implying she’s a homewrecker who slept her way to the top.

Pitbull and Bre-Z Murray guest star on tonight's episode of Empire, airing at 9 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.

In "Fires of Heaven," Cookie and Anika secretly work together behind Lucious' back to pull off a surprise performance that catches the eye of Pitbull (guest-starring as himself).

Meanwhile, Lucious tracks down Frank Gathers' daughter, Young Ma (guest star Bre-Z Murray), to try to convince her to sign with him at Empire, while Hakeem is hard at work on his girl group, Ménage a Trois. Also, Andre and Rhonda hope their baby-on-the-way will be the key that unlocks Lucious' cold heart and opens the door for Andre to return to the Empire fold.

"Sometimes you got to pull at those heartstrings to get paid," says Cookie when offering Andre advice.
