Primetime Emmy Awards Add Short Form Categories, Expand Number of Directing/Writing Nominees

Earlier this week, the Television Academy announced changes for the
68th Primetime Emmys, including new short form categories.
The Television Academy has expanded its short form categories for the 2016 Primetime Emmy Awards competition, saying it is embracing the proliferation of quality storytelling across both digital and traditional networks and platforms.

In expanding these categories, the Academy further acknowledges the dramatic growth of the work of Television Academy members and others in the production and distribution of short form programs (defined as program episodes averaging 15 minutes or less). Note: Most of the 56 nominated series for this year's Indie Series Awards would fall into this category, though some of the drama series (The Bay, Wintethorne, EastSiders, Anacostia) produce episodes longer than 15 minutes.

Bruce Rosenblum, Television Academy Chairman and CEO said, “Our industry is aggressively, quickly and creatively evolving the various ways episodic stories are told. Our Board of Governors felt that this expansion of short form categories begins the process of ensuring that Emmy-worthy creativity will be rewarded, irrespective of format or platform. These category changes reflect the broader opportunities that emerging networks and distribution platforms, such as Maker Studios, Fullscreen, AwesomenessTV, YouTube Red, Adult Swim and others, are seizing in choosing innovative formats that enable our television community to share stories in novel and entertaining ways.”

OPINION: Thoughts On The 2013 Daytime Emmy Awards

The 2011 Daytime Emmy Awards in Las Vegas will likely forever hold the record as the worse of all time, but this year's ceremony on HLN was bad in its own right.

Let's start with the positives.

Doug Davidson was finally recognized after 35 years on THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS. His speech was wonderful as well.

Heather Tom won again this year and it was especially sweet that she thanked her son, Zane. She was pregnant with him when she won last year.

Jess Walton and Corbin Bernsen
DAYS OF OUR LIVES star Chandler Massey deservedly won for a second year in the Younger Actor category and also gave a very heartfelt speech.

Kristen Alderson won for her work on GENERAL HOSPITAL and was incredibly enthusiastic and happy (a nice change of pace for the ceremony) even though she seemed to have the farthest distance to walk/run before getting to the stage.

Monty Hall & Bob Stewart To Receive Lifetime Achievement Award At Daytime Emmys. It's Time To Recognize Soap Opera Contributors Again.

Irna Phillips
Malachy Wienges, Chairman, National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, announced today that that game show host Monty Hall and game show producer Bob Stewart will be honored at the 40th Daytime Emmy Awards with this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award. It looks like another year where people working in daytime drama are overlooked. Below is a list of Lifetime Achievement Award recipients from the Daytime Emmys. Not to take anything away from past deserving winners, but the first thought that comes to my mind when reviewing it is, "Where's Irna Phillips?"

The Museum of Broadcast TV describes Phillips in this way:
The universally recognized originator of one of television's most enduring--and profitable--television genres, Irna Phillips is responsible for the daytime drama as we know it today. Her contributions to one format are unprecedented in television history. Television comedy had many parents-- Ernie Kovacs, Jackie Gleason; TV drama had early shapers in Paddy Chayefsky, Rod Serling, Reginald Rose and others. But the soap opera had only one mother and she was it. She founded an entire industry based on her techniques, beliefs and the ongoing, interlocking stories that she dreamed.

HLN To Air Daytime Emmy Awards On June 16

HLN returns as the host network of the annual Daytime Entertainment Emmy Awards show, now in its 40th year, presented live from The Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles on Sunday, June 16, 8-10 p.m. ET/PT, it was announced by Scot Safon, Executive Vice President & General Manager, HLN, and Malachy Wienges, Chairman, National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

“Last year, HLN’s first-ever presentation of the Daytime Emmy Awards was the #1 most-watched, regularly-scheduled non-news broadcast in the network’s history, and received terrific viewer feedback both on-air and online. Our audiences thanked us for tapping into that vital part of American pop culture,” said Safon. “HLN is the news channel that focuses on stories at the forefront of the American conversation, and daytime programming often tackles those same themes and stories. We are so happy to again present the program that honors the best work in daytime.”

Drama Performer Pre-Nominations Announced For 40th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) in cooperation with the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS), today announced the Drama Performer Pre-Nominations for the 40th Annual Daytime Entertainment Emmy® Awards.

A ballot containing a full list of entrants in each of four performer categories was sent to registered, eligible peer judges. The ballot contained an unrevealed and randomized order of performers in each category, regardless of their show affiliation. Judges were required to view clips containing the work of each performer entry before selecting their top 10 performer choices in each category. The judges sent their ballots directly to Lutz & Carr, an independent accounting firm, who tabulated the results.

The Lead Actress category contains 11 pre-nominated performers due to a tie. The candidates below who received the highest number of votes now advance to the blue ribbon at-home screening round, scheduled to begin on March 27th, 2013, which will determine both nominees and recipients. This year due to the number of entrants in the Younger Actress and Younger Actor categories for Drama Series Performers age 25 or under, there was no pre-nomination round necessary, so the 9 entrants in each of those categories will advance to the Blue Ribbon round as entrants and are also revealed in this release.

Pre-nominated performers in alphabetical order in four categories and Younger Actor and Actress entrants follow below:

CLASSIC CLIP: Doug Marland's Daytime Emmys Acceptance Speech 1981 - ATWT, GH, OLTL, AMC Clips

When GUIDING LIGHT won the Emmy for Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series at the 1981 Emmys, head writer Douglas Marland accepted the award on behalf of the team. It is interesting to note that he thanks Brian Frons, who was a young, hotshot exec at CBS at the time. Deidre Hall and the late Christopher Bernau presented the award.

Here is Marland's acceptance speech:

Thank you. Thank you very much. I accept this award on behalf of this writing team - Nancy (Franklin), Pete (Harding Lemay), Bob (Robert Dwyer) and myself. And I want to say being nominated by your peers, and finding yourself nominated in the same company with an Agnes Nixon and the other nominees here today is really honor enough. But we thank you.
