NEWS: June Spencer, Jade Harlow, Twitter Trolls, Jimmy & Hazel, Cord Cutting

The Archers star June Spencer has been with the British radio soap opera
since its debut in 1950.
Actress June Spencer: "The creator of The Archers thought he was God"
As the Radio 4 soap opera celebrates its 65th anniversary, June Spencer, the actress who plays Peggy Woolley, spoke to Telegraph about the first ever episodes in 1950.

“We doubled like mad in those days,” recalls Spencer. “As well as Peggy, I played the Irish Rita Flynn, using an accent I borrowed from my landlady.”

Spencer, now 96, doesn’t hold back on The Archers' creator Godfrey Baseley. “I can’t say he was greatly loved. He was a very abrupt man and he could be very dictatorial. He thought he was God. He wasn’t very popular but he knew what he was doing when he invented The Archers.”

The show, originally billed as “an everyday story of country folk” but now described as “a contemporary drama in a rural setting”, has become a national institution and the world’s longest-running active soap opera (second only to Guiding Light for total longevity), with more than 17,800 episodes in the bank.

Downton Abbey series finale wins Christmas Day ratings battle in the UK
The final episode of Downton Abbey beat Strictly Come Dancing’s Christmas Special to win the battle of the Christmas Day ratings, as 6.6 million tuned in to wish a fond farewell to the Crawleys. Downton went head-to-head with an hour-long special of EastEnders in the 8:45 p.m. time slot, but even a shock car crash involving the Mitchell and Beale families only captured the attention of 5.7 million fans. It still triumphed in the war between the soaps, with Coronation Street pulling in an average of 5.6 million and Emmerdale 4.3 million.

Drake posted a photo on Instagram of his reunion with Degrassi
co-star Andrea Lewis with the caption, "Forever my ting..
Drake can’t stop smiling after reunited with his Degrassi girlfriend, Andrea Lewis
Jimmy and Hazel, together again. On Thursday, Drake reunited with his former Degrassi co-starm Andrea Lewis, who played Hazel Aden on the show. Jimmy and Hazel started dating in Season 3, and lasted until Season 5. They met in detention, and were dating when Jimmy was infamously shot, which ultimately caused tension in their relationship. Things ended because of Jimmy’s attraction to Ellie.

Cord cutting is gonna suck in 2016, but it’ll get better
If you’re willing to break the law, you could supplement a meager streaming video service by torrenting pirated copies of your favorite shows. But with the feds cracking down on torrent trackers, that might not be an option for long, even if you’re willing to risk it. Or you could try staggering your subscriptions. Subscribe to HBO Now for for the few months that Game of Thrones is on the air, and then cancel and switch to Hulu. Subscribe to Sling TV in the fall for Monday Night Football, then cancel when football season is over. But that sounds like a hassle.

Such is the plight of the cord cutting couch potato in 2016. It will probably get better. The Federal Communications Commission is looking into Comcast’s data rates. Eventually, the advantage of exclusive deals with specific streaming providers may not be worth it for studios. For example, instead of going exclusive with Netflix, Marvel might make its superhero shows available on Netflix, Hulu and YouTube simultaneously, so you won’t need so many subscriptions.

Twitter says new measures "have tackled trolls"
Twitter has clamped down on internet trolls by introducing a series of measures over the past year, its European head Bruce Daisley has said. Speaking to The Independent ahead of Twitter's 10th birthday, Daisley said more effort had been put into user safety than any other issue.

"The measures we've taken correlate directly with a reduction in the amount of bad behavior," he said.

A series of high-profile users have quit Twitter, citing online abuse.

The newspaper reports that the site has been targeting suspected so-called internet trolls - people who use social media accounts to abuse others - by asking more users that they identify themselves through phone verification.

Days of our Lives alum Jade Harlow stars in movie inspired by real tragedy filmed in Massachusetts town
A feature film inspired by details of the Christa Worthington murder is planned for release this summer following a month of filming this fall in Provincetown. Harlow (Sheryl on Days) will star in Denton Harbor as a character meant to resemble Worthington.

NEWS: Eric Braeden, Katherine Kelly Lang, Freddie Smith, Eddie Redmayne, 'Downton Abbey' Finale, 'EastEnders' Transgender Character

Fact Checking LA Webfest's Exclusivity Clause
Pairings creator and star Ed Robinson writes: "I am going public now because there has been misinformation spread by LA Webfest about both the Indie Series Awards and Hollywebfest and if I do not speak out with corrections, there is no reason for new creators not to believe LA Webfest’s errors. I think it is important that new web creators have all of the facts when they make decisions with their money and it saddens me deeply that LA Webfest has e-mailed many new creators with incorrect information."

What the hell is going on in LA?
Writers 3some creator and star Lisa Gifford: "There are three web series events coming up in LA. LA Webfest, Hollyweb Festival and The Indies Series Awards. Hollyweb and LA Webfest are festivals, The Indie Series Awards is, as the name suggests, an awards show. I understand that LA Webfest was the first web series festival – it launched in 2010 (the ISAs actually launched the same year, but were an online event in year one). I can appreciate that they want to protect their business, but penalising web series creators is not the way to go about things. Can you imagine if McDonalds put out an email stating that anyone who eats in Burger King is no longer welcome in their restaurants? Ludicrous."

Eric Braeden
'The Young and the Restless' Star Eric Braeden on Victor's Villainy
"Storyline aside, the audience would never have forgiven Victor if he hadn't saved Jack, though, as you will recall, there was a scene years ago when Jack saw Victor collapse in his office during an angry outburst and he left him there to die—and stepped on his hand as he walked out the door! My God Almighty! Can you believe that? The animosity will continue. Just because Victor saved Jack's life doesn't mean anything. Victor thinks Jack is a dick and a son of a bitch and he always will. They don't ever change."

Julian Fellowes on Twists in the ‘Downton Abbey’ Season Finale
[Spoiler Alert!] In one fell swoop, the Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith) abandoned any thought of rekindling a past infatuation with the Russian Prince Kuragin, and Isobel Crawley (Penelope Wilton) closed the door on her engagement to Lord Merton. Love bloomed in the servants’ quarters, where the stately Mr. Carson (Jim Carter) at long last proposed to the kindly Mrs. Hughes (Phyllis Logan).

"A soap opera has many, many incidents," explained Fellowes. "People are being shot and stabbed and knifed. They’re dying in childbirth, having abortions, having their houses broken into, being attacked by vandals. We do, on Downton, have extreme cases, but not very many of them. And we have a lot of reaction to them, because that seems to me truer to life. That’s what I would like to tell myself, anyway."

'The Bold and the Beautiful' Star Katherine Kelly Lang on Brooke's Battle With the Bottle
[Spoiler Alert!] "I have no idea how far [exec producer-head writer] Brad Bell will take this but Brooke needs to hit bottom, and she will. There's an episode [airing March 10] where she is rejected by Deacon again and she's drinking so much she falls and hits her head. It's her idea to seek help. Whether it works or not, I can't say. But it'll definitely be tough for her. She's traded one addiction for another."

'The Bold and the Beautiful' Returns to the U.K. Via YouTube Channel
The new online initiative launches March 2, and will begin with Episode 6720, which sees Thorsten Kaye take over the role of Ridge Forrester.

Rebecca Budig on Prospect Park's ALL MY CHILDREN: 'I expressed interest and then they never came back to me!'
"I wasn't insulted at all but I was a little disappointed. I really, really miss Greenlee. But, then, none of my men were there. They didn't have Cameron Mathison. They were never going to get Josh Duhamel. What they should have done was bring back Danny Cosgrove, who is amazing. Love that guy! Michael B. Jordan was my brother on AMC and now he's a big movie star. So what were they gonna do with me? I'd be all alone!"

DAYS OF OUR LIVES actor Riley Bodenstab to guest star on JUSTIFIED
Bodenstab, whose alter ego Cole has been making a lot of trouble for JJ, makes his first appearance Tuesday night on FX’s JUSTIFIED. “It was really rewarding to work with [star] Timothy Olyphant,” enthuses Bodenstab. “I admire his acting and look up to him.” Bodenstab is limited in what he can reveal about his JUSTIFIED appearance but teases, “It’s a little similar to other characters that I’ve played, but it also has an interesting angle that I haven’t been able to hit before. It’s a very dynamic character.”

Why Is DOWNTON ABBEY So Horrible to Its Female Characters?
[SPOILER ALERT] DOWNTON ABBEY has a long record of punishing women who dare to challenge convention. This week, Anna the lady’s maid was raped after she ignored her husband’s warning and was—gasp!—polite to a visiting valet.

DOWNTON ABBEY Downton Abbey Producer Defends Controversial Storyline
Gareth Neame, the series' executive producer, was prepared for backlash after the shocking twist sparked rage from horrified English viewers. "It had a big reaction and a lot of people were upset by it," Neame acknowledges. "Like the death of the Matthew Crawley character, audiences are very protective of these characters and view them as an extension of their own families. The big thing about our show is there being big twists and surprises, and this (incident) is perpetrated on possibly the most beloved character of all: the one with the warmest heart."

Robin Wright and Ben Foster Are Engaged

At the Golden Globes, sloppy gets it done
Nobody had an acceptance speech ready. Nobody could get to the stage in a timely manner. The red carpet was accidentally soaked before the show in dirty drain water. Men showed up with fancier hairdos than the women. The Breathalyzer results were just north of handcuffable. This is all we ever really ask for from any awards show — something to look at and laugh off.

DOWNTON ABBEY Returns to PBS Tonight (January Spoilers)

Season 4 of DOWNTON ABBEY premieres on MASTERPIECE, Sunday, January 5 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on PBS.

Six months after Downton Abbey's great tragedy, Mary is mired in grief and the estate is engulfed in death taxes. As the family struggles to lift their financial and emotional woes, clashes arise, sparks fly, and it is up to the older generation to bring Mary back to life, and Robert to his senses – no easy task in either respect. Another departure leaves no tears in its wake, but rather opportunity for new faces – and drama, alliances, and sparks of an entirely different sort – below stairs.

As London draws Downton's youth with its glamorous jazz clubs and sparkling literary scene, social change sweeps its way up to the venerable estate, bringing with it a threat to the continued relevance and very existence of Dowton Abbey. But neither the Crawley family nor its servants can anticipate a dire new threat
that penetrates the Abbey's ancestral walls, buttressed as they are by loyalty and love.

Amidst dark secrets, budding romances and surprising revelations, DOWNTON ABBEY returns with a gripping fourth season starring Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Michelle Dockery, Shirley MacLaine, Paul Giamatti and the rest of stellar cast in the award-winning series from Julian Fellowes.
