TELENOVELA WATCH: Thoughts on MENTIR PARA VIVIR; EL OCTAVO MANDAMIENTO Premieres Tonight; The End of DAMA Y OBRERO

MENTIR PARA VIVIR
After two weeks, MENTIR PARA VIVIR (weeknights at 10 p.m. ET on Univision) is by a wide margin the best telenovela to premiere on Univision this year. This is perhaps faint praise in what has to this point been a decidedly poor year for Televisa – the mere fact MENTIR PARA VIVIR features a fresh, original story that develops swiftly, characters who behave as recognizable humans with actions and feelings psychologically motivated, and good acting and direction, is enough to place it above the other Televisa productions we’ve seen on Univision this year.

TELENOVELA WATCH: MENTIR PARA VIVIR Comes To Univision Tonight; Plus, LA TEMPESTAD, MARIDO EN ALQUILER, DAMA Y OBRERO

MENTIR PARA VIVIR makes its US premiere tonight on Univision at 10 p.m. ET. A Mexican production from Televisa, MENTIR PARA VIVIR reunites the creative team behind the 2011 telenovela LA FUERZA DEL DESTINO: producer Rosy Ocampo (POR ELLA SOY EVA), writer María Zarattini (ALBORADA), and lead actor David Zepeda (ABISMO DE PASIÓN). The lead actress is Mayrín Villanueva (UNA FAMILIA CON SUERTE), and the cast also features Diego Olivera (TRIUNFO DEL AMOR), Altair Jarabo (ABISMO DE PASIÓN), Leticia Perdigón (POR ELLA SOY EVA) and Cecilia Gabriela (CACHITO DE CIELO).

It did not take much for MENTIR PARA VIVIR to be my most highly anticipated telenovela to come to Univision since AMOR BRAVÍO. First, the fact MENTIR PARA VIVIR is the only telenovela from Televisa to reach our screens this year that features an original story. Second, the fact that original story is by Zarattini, one of the foremost telenovela writers in Mexico. And finally, the fact MENTIR PARA VIVIR is short by recent Televisa standards, only about one hundred episodes long.

TELENOVELA WATCH: Thoughts on SECRETOS DEL PARAISO on MundoFox; DAMA Y OBRERO and MARIDO EN ALQUILER on Telemundo; Favorites From PREMIOS TU MUNDO Nominees

SECRETOS DEL PARAÍSO
While it is a custom of this column to focus on English-friendly telenovelas, i.e., those available with English captions, I would be remiss if I did not mention SECRETOS DEL PARAÍSO (weeknights at 8 p.m. ET on MundoFox), I think the best telenovela airing right now in the US, perhaps the best of the year.

SECRETOS DEL PARAÍSO is a very serious, mature telenovela that creates a suffocating atmosphere of tension in its examination of a pair of damaged families, united by a marriage in the first week. The heavy use of flashbacks of the crimes committed by the protagonists’ parents gives an impression of the past forever intruding upon and shaping the present discord in the lives of their children. There is a marvelous sense of impending doom prevalent through the telenovela, of nooses tightening as the relationships between the characters get messier and messier.

TELENOVELA WATCH: DAMA Y OBRERO and COMANDO ELITE Premiere Tonight

A pair of telenovelas premiere tonight. On Telemundo, DAMA Y OBRERO takes over the 8 p.m. ET slot. A Miami-produced adaptation of a 2012 Chilean telenovela of the same name, it stars José Luis Reséndez, Ana Layevska and Fabián Ríos – a bit of sameness in the trio as all actors who have worked together before – Layevska and Reséndez in LA MADRASTRA, Layevska and Ríos in EL FANTASMA DE ELENA and MI CORAZÓN INSISTE, Reséndez and Ríos in last year’s CORAZÓN VALIENTE, but never all in the same project. In any event, it should be gratifying to finally see Ana Layevska, a delightfully inventive actress, once again in a leading role after watching her steal her previous three telenovelas at the network playing two antagonists and a supporting role.

Roberto Tapia To Perform DAMA Y OBRERO Theme Song

Top Regional Mexican music star Roberto Tapia will perform the vocals on “El Guardián de tu Vida,” the theme song for DAMA Y OBRERO, Telemundo’s new original production premiering Monday, June 24 at 8 p.m. ET. The singer, songwriter and LA VOZ KIDS coach revealed that he has first-hand experience of the type of love story featured in the production, which stars Jose Luis Resendez, Ana Layevzka and Fabián Rios.

“This is the first time I am providing a song to a telenovela, and I feel privileged to be taken into account for this grand production, DAMA Y OBRERO. There was a time when I was the obrero, the working-class suitor in love with a dama (lady),” recalled Tapia, one of today’s most charismatic and popular figures in Regional Mexican music.
