Jensen Buchanan Sentenced to One Year in County Jail

Former Another World and One Life to Live star Jensen Buchanan, who reportedly drove on the wrong side of Highway 154 and into the path of an Arizona driver, nearly killing him, was sentenced to one year in County Jail and five years probation for the DUI crash.

Buchanan pleaded guilty last month to driving under the influence causing injury, felony DUI with a blood alcohol content of over 0.08 causing injury, plus special allegations after Judge James Voysey indicated he would follow probation's recommendations and not send her to prison.

On Friday, Arizona residents Bradley Asolas and his wife, Sandy, also urged the judge to impose the maximum sentence.

“Even though I didn’t die that day, in a very real sense she took away my life, because now I am going to die sooner than I probably would have,” Asolas said.

At the time of the crash, Asolas was heading to work in Santa Maria, commuting from his brother’s house in Camarillo.

His active and healthy life before the crash has become one filled with pain and medical appointments as his body recovers from a lengthy list of injuries.

Buchanan appeared on numerous soap operas over nearly three decades, including appearances most recently on The Young and the Restless (as Elise), and previously on One Life to Live (Sarah), Another World (Vicky), As the World Turns (Vicky) and General Hospital (Melissa).

Jensen Buchanan Pleads Guilty to DUI Charges, Faces a Year of More in Jail

Former Another World and One Life to Live star Jensen Buchanan pleaded guilty Friday to driving under the influence, crashing into and seriously injuring a driver on Highway 154, and she now faces the possibility of a year in County Jail.

Buchanan originally pleaded not guilty in October after being charged with DUI causing injury, and felony DUI with a blood alcohol content of over 0.08 causing injury, plus special allegations.

Her possible sentence could include five years of probation plus up to 365 days in County Jail.

Judge James Voysey reminded Buchanan that the sentence was conditional, meaning that it may change after the court hears about victim Bradley Asolas' medical conditions during the sentencing hearing set for October 6.

Asolas and his wife, Sandy, said they were shocked and appalled at the outcome of Friday's hearing.

"I think it's wrong. My life's forever changed, and she got off with a slap on the wrist," Asolas said. "When I drive now, I always wonder, if I'm involved in a crash again where the airbags break out and my heart gives out again, I can actually die this time."

O. J. Simpson: Soap Opera of the Century

Like millions of others around the world, I was glued to the TV on October 3, 1995, to watch the verdict announced in the O. J. Simpson double murder trial. I'd worked in soaps for so long by then (and had been a fan even longer), I almost didn't mind the preemptions because the true-life "Trial of The Century" eclipsed almost anything Bill Bell or James E. Reilly could put on the air. It even had a surprise ending many never suspected.

For me, however, it was more personal. My cousin, Keith, was the manager at the now infamous Mezzaluna Restaurant in Beverly Hills and dated murder victim Nicole Brown Simpson. A struggling actor at the time, I also worked there as the maitre D' (in another odd soap connection, the bartender was soon-to-be-discovered Laura Leighton: "Sydney" of Melrose Place fame) and spent lots of social time with Keith, Nicole and her kids. Of course, I'd seen O. J. at Mezzaluna on occasion and heard all the "first-hand" stories that have since become the stuff of legend. It all seems like a surreal, and very horrible, dream...but it was a part of my youth just as it is a part of our generation's pop culture, still being exploited in highly rated and well reviewed TV series and documentaries.

This week, O. J. Simpson is going to be back on the small screen for his latest parole hearing [for a different crime of which he was convicted], probably preempting the few remaining daytime soap operas...a genre his trial was credited with irreparably damaging; too many viewers got out of the habit and switched off.

It is ironic that almost a quarter century has elapsed (time flies, friends) and there is still an appetite for O. J. Simpson news. Other convicted criminals, even the celebrity sort, don't get that kind of coverage so maybe it's an opportunity for us to reflect as to WHY people are still so compelled. I have made a career in TV reporting since his first trial and the only answer I can come up with is "Because it's a soap opera."

While I will certainly be curious to know the outcome of his hearing, I'll read about it online and hear about it at work. And when I get home, I intend to catch up on my DVR recordings of Days of our Lives, The Young and the Restless and General Hospital.

EDITOR'S NOTE: O.J. Simpson is set for a parole hearing Thursday, July 20 at 1 p.m. ET, on the remaining counts for which he was convicted in Las Vegas in 2008. According to a number of experts, Simpson has a strong chance of a favorable outcome before the Nevada Board of Parole, which in 2013 paroled him on five counts.

Jensen Buchanan Preliminary Hearing Rescheduled for August

A Santa Barbara County Superior Court preliminary hearing for veteran soap opera actress, Jensen Buchanan, charged with driving while drunk on Highway 154 and causing a crash that critically injured an Arizona man has been rescheduled for later this summer.

Buchanan will next return to court for the preliminary hearing on August 18 in Santa Maria before Judge Gustavo Lavayen.

Authorities have said Buchanan was driving with a blood alcohol level of .34 at the time of the 6:20 a.m. crash on Highway 154 near the Live Oak Camp on May 18, 2016.

California Highway Patrol officers from Buellton said Buchanan, the driver of a Mercedes S550, was eastbound on Highway 154 and allowed her vehicle to drift across the double yellow line directly into the path of a Ford C-Max traveling west.

The other driver, Bradley Asolas, who now lives in Arizona, suffered major injuries and had to be extricated from his vehicle.

He spent more than 30 days in Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital and continues his recovery from the various injuries more than a year later.

Buchanan faces several charges, including felony driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury, and felony driving with a blood-alcohol level of .08 percent or greater.

She also is charged with causing great bodily injury to Asolas, and an allegation her blood-alcohol level exceeded .15 percent.

Buchanan appeared on numerous soap operas over nearly three decades, including appearances most recently on The Young and the Restless (as Elise), and previously on One Life to Live (Sarah), Another World (Vicky), As the World Turns (Vicky) and General Hospital (Melissa).

A Santa Barbara County Superior Court arraignment hearing for soap opera actress Jensen Buchanan, accused of driving while drunk and causing an injury accident on Highway 154 has been continued to October 14.

Buchanan, 54, was not in the Santa Maria courtroom for Friday morning’s brief hearing before visiting Judge Barry Hammer.

Defense attorney Meryl Chambers asked for the continued arraignment hearing on behalf of her client

Deputy District Attorney Tiffany Dix told the judge she did not object to the request, adding that she believes the next hearing will involve either a disposition of the case or the defendant entering a not-guilty plea.

She also requested the judge order Buchanan to attend the next hearing, which Hammer did.

With a blood-alcohol level allegedly more than four times the legal limit, Buchanan faces several charges, including felony driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury and felony driving with a blood-alcohol level of .08 percent or greater.

'Glee' Star Mark Salling Arrested for Possession of Child Porn, Out on Bail

Mark Salling
People magazine is reporting that Glee's Mark Salling, an original cast member who played the iconic bully-with-a-heart-of-gold Noah Puckerman, has been arrested. The charges are disturbing.

"He was taken into custody this morning for possession of child porn," Officer Aareon Jefferson of the Los Angeles Police Department told People.

According to TMZ, Salling was booked on possession of child porn, specifically porn involving minors "engaging in or simulating sexual conduct."

Bail was set at $20,000 and Salling's family posted it.

Law enforcement sources now tell us they've already seen more than a thousand images of "child sexual exploitation" on Salling's computer. Cops also seized other electronic devices, including tablets and cellphones. We're also told he lives alone, which will make it hard to argue someone else put the images in the computer.

Sources say when cops arrived to search the home, Salling was "shocked."

The law provides if there are more than 600 images, the maximum punishment is 5 years in prison.

The syndicated TV series Crime Watch Daily first reported the arrest. Billy Jensen, a correspondent for the show, told the CBS-owned news-radio station KNX-AM that police reportedly acted on a tip from a friend or "possibly a girlfriend of his,” adding, “As far as what they found, the number is in the hundreds of images. We haven’t heard anything about videos or anything like that."

'As the World Turns' and 'Bold and the Beautiful' Alum Lesli Kay Appears on 'Crime Watch Daily' Pen Pal Murder Episode

Lesli Kay
On Tuesday, December 15, Crime Watch Daily examines the shocking murder of Harry Major, a revered Hollywood High School English teacher whose 28-year career impacted thousands of students, including a host of future celebrities. Who would kill such a cherished community icon? Clues started to emerge when Harry’s close friend, Dale Rowse, uncovered a shocking secret; hundreds of letters between Major and violent felons in various prisons across the country. “I tell you, I didn’t see that part of him ever in years – no hint of it, so he did a very good job of separating those two worlds,” says Dale to Crime Watch Daily. The letters were sexual in nature and promised money and housing to the prisoners upon their release in exchange for sex. One pen pal by the name of Scott Kratlian, who was staying with Major at the time of his death, stood out to authorities. The two had started corresponding via a soap opera fan club.

Just days after Major’s murder, Kratlian was photographed with his favorite soap opera actress Lesli Kay (ex-Felicia, The Bold and the Beautiful; ex-Molly, As the World Turns) who tells Crime Watch Daily, “I went home and told my fiancĂ©, ‘he’s the nicest guy, he’s also probably a serial killer’.”

Was Kay right about Kratlian? Tune into Crime Watch Daily on Tuesday for more on the story. Watch a sneak peek below:
