NEWS: Streamys, CHICK, Hayzlett, Source Interlink
Previewing the Streamys, the Oscars of the Web
It promises to be a generational showdown, not to mention a battle between old-school Hollywood and basement-bred YouTube stars, when this Sunday's second annual Streamy Awards take place in downtown Los Angeles.
Much like this year's Oscar race, however, the awards appear to be boiling down to a battle between the independents vs. the studios, and if last week's Craft Awards are any indication, Sunday may bring some Hurt Locker-style upsets.

We Love Soaps: Sandra seems like a fun character to play.
Kathryn Neville Browne: She definitely is. This time we're seeing a lot more of her, and learning a lot more about her history and what she's really all about beneath the glamorous exterior.
We Love Soaps: What do you think are her driving motivations?
Kathryn Neville Browne: Well, in this instance, definitely pride and revenge. I guess they're two sides of the same coin.

Internet Superhero Kai Soremekun Talks CHICK, Part Three
We Love Soaps: I think politically this is a great time for CHICK to come out. Many people who have been disenfranchised voted for the first time in the Presidential Elections in 2008. This series speaks to people who are getting in touch with that power.
Kai Soremekun: I think it’s an amazing time. I know people are freaking out because the economy went to hell and so much bad stuff has gone down. But I go back to my belief that what we call “bad stuff”, who knows if it’s bad or good? Human nature requires that we have funkiness in order to be moved to shift to somewhere else. Unfortunately we don’t tend to say, “Life is great, so what can I do to grow and improve?” You kind of need that bad stuff. I think it’s a fascinating time for the world in terms of our growth as a species.
There’s a Chinese fable about a farmer in a rural area who lives with his son. And his son goes out and finds a wild horse and brings it back. All the people in the village say, “This is such good luck,” but the farmer says, “Maybe so, maybe not.” The son is training the horse, falls off, and breaks his leg. Then the villagers say, “Such bad luck, such bad luck!” Then the army comes into town and takes all the young people, but the guy’s broken leg prevents him from having to go to war. So you never know if something is good or bad in the sequence of events. If you stay open to seeing everything as a part of the process, and assume the whole process is good, then you stop defining things as much as “good” or “bad,” you just see it as all part of the journey.

Internet Superhero Kai Soremekun Talks CHICK, Part Two
We Love Soaps: While watching CHICK there are times I find myself fascinated. I don't know sometimes whether to laugh or cry with this woman.
Kai Soremekun: On one level CHICK is a show where you can just have fun. You can watch this girl who wants to be a superhero do some silly things in pursuit of her dream. But you can see it on deeper levels. We all have a need to find our purpose in life. We all have so much potential, and have things get in our way in everyday life. I want to explore those issues and themes. You can go as deep as you want to go with it or you can just be purely entertained. We’ve just scratched the surface in season one, season two goes much deeper and is going to give viewers a lot more opportunities to interact.
We Love Soaps: I have told you that I am a therapist, I have to say that CHICK for me is psychologically complex in many ways. It is very entertaining and fun, but on a deeper psychological level I see a woman who could be decompensating into mental illness. I have to ask you, in the world of Los Angeles in which CHICK lives, is there really a superhero academy to be found or is she mentally declining?
Kai Soremekun: I don’t mind giving away that she is going to find an academy. She is not declining. I feel like I want to be brave enough to acknowledge that this is sometimes what we go through. They say the only difference between crazy people and people who appear normal is that crazy people talk out loud. It’s really just me, showing what goes on. I appear normal, at least I think I do, but there’s lots of stuff going on. I want to acknowledge that this is the way journey is. Especially when you are going for your dreams, you’re going to appear crazy at some points. It’s part of the process. By the end of Season One I think it will be clear that she’s not diving into the depths of insanity, that there is actually a payoff for her.
We Love Soaps: What in your mind is the definition of the word, “Superhero?”

Internet Superhero Kai Soremekun Talks CHICK, Part One
We Love Soaps: Before we talk about CHICK, I’d like to go back a bit. Where are you from?
Kai Soremekun: I’m originally from Toronto, Canada. I grew up there, and came to the states to go to the American Musical & Dramatic Academy in New York City.
We Love Soaps: What caused you to move to Los Angeles?
Kai Soremekun: I was focused on acting, and they said to come out to L.A. for pilot season. When I got here I realized that as far as work in television the opportunities were ten times more than they were in New York City. In my second year I booked a series regular role on the Fox network show, MEDICINE BALL [1995]. It was exactly GREY'S ANATOMY, but unfortunately we did not do as well as GREY'S ANATOMY. We aired for nine episodes, but it was a great experience, and the reason I went back to school to study filmmaking. I had worked so hard to realize the dream of being a regular on a TV show. Then when I got it, it was a little disillusioning. I guess I envisioned a lot more freedom, and it was exactly the opposite. Once you are of value to someone on a TV show they wants to keep the reins on you.

Viva La (Indie Soap) Revolution!
But somewhere around fifteen years ago, daytime dramas lost their way. They focused less on the triumph of the human spirit, and more on mobsters, cartoon villains, baby switches, bombs, and weird weather patterns. It seemed they no longer had an interest in inspiring and educating their audience. In fact, one actress on a popular show around this time was told by her executive producer, "We're not in the business of helping people."
Fortunately, the Indie Soap Revolution is here, and they are picking up online where the television networks left off. By reviewing the nominees for the 1st Annual Indie Soap Awards, I have been entertained, enriched, and enthralled. Not since my childhood have I been so excited and inspired about the power and relevance of the continuing story format. Sure, I will always love the network soaps out of loyalty, tradition, and nostalgia. But I’m telling you readers here and now that my focus, passion, and devotion is now electrified on the web, and you will be hearing a lot more from me from now on about the new worlds turning out in cyber space.
