NEWS ROUNDUP: Dark Shadows Comic, First Look At Carol Burnett on AMC, 90210 Rocks The Vote

Soap Vampire Barnabas Collins Returns in DARK SHADOWS Comic
On May 11, 2012, Dark Shadows will be revived, going to theaters courtesy of the frequent team-up of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. The soap opera from the late sixties is famous for its supernatural leanings; its cult status is due largely to it being the first exposure of ghosts and vampires to a daytime audience.

Before its revival in moving pictures, however, it is coming to comic books in October 2011 courtesy of Dynamite Entertainment. The story will revolve primarily around “reluctant vampire” Barnabas, the character Depp will play in the film, and will be in-continuity with the show that came before it. Writer Stuart Manning, who has a history with the property, teams with artist Aaron Campbell to bring a new generation into the world of Collinwood.

News Round-up

Handprint ceremony for ALL MY CHILDREN's Lucci tonight
FOX411 reports: "You could have a busy time of it in Times Square tonight. At 7 p.m., Susan Lucci is putting her handprints in cement at Planet Hollywood. This is not to be missed. Susan’s been playing vixen Erica Kane on ALL MY CHILDREN since 1910 — or so it would seem. But the real Lucci is a doll, a great lady and a lot of fun. You may have read that ABC forced her to take a massive pay cut recently as all soaps are on the decline. Frankly, without Lucci, and Erika Slezak on ONE LIFE TO LIVE — there would be no ABC Daytime."

CADY MCCLAIN: Throw Them Shoes. Throw Mine, Too!
"Anybody watch 60 MINUTES [on Sunday]? We are TOTALLY screwed for the next 5 years, thank you very much Bush, Cheney, Blackwater, Mortgage Lenders, Brokers, corrupt Presidents of Corporations, Senators, and all those who made a buck off the middle class while screwing the rest of us to the wall. Bastards. I pray that Obama hires someone to take on the ethical monstrosities that have occurred in the past ten years and make those idiots sit in a nice, comfy, state penitentiary.

I think an organized shoe throw might be a really great way to make a statement. Imagine thousands of people lined up to hurl their shoes at a picture of Bush. That would be too f-ing fabulous. Apparently, I’m not the ONLY one who feels this way!"

HOLLYOAKS actress on explosive exit
HOLLYOAKS fans have been gripped by the storyline involving superbitch Louise Summers (Roxanne McKee) and her fiance Warren (Jamie Lomas). As we all know, soap weddings rarely go as planned, but this couple's nuptials are set to end in disaster.

Actress McKee talked to Digital Spy about the storyline and revealed how she'd known it was going to end in dramatic fashion, saying: "Absolutely, it had to come out at some stage. I've known for over a year that I've wanted to leave, so I went to the writers last year to let them know that I wouldn't be signing another contract and asked for a nice exit at the same time."

INTERVIEW: HOLLYOAKS producer Bryan Kirkwood
"I definitely think we underplayed the romance element of 2008. You live and learn from your mistakes in this type of job. We overplayed our hand with crime and revenge storylines and underplayed the simple, straightforward love stories. That's something that'll write itself when we go into 2009."

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: Welcome to the East Dillon Giraffes?
"Well, that was fun. As the third season of FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS nears its end on DirecTV -- and beginning on NBC -- writers and producers certainly aren't making it easy on us. With only two more episodes to go before the waiting begins -- the annual "FNL" guessing game as to whether or not the series will nab another season -- things are already getting a bit tearful.

Saying goodbye to graduating friends is easy compared to what went down in the third season's 11th episode. Child abuse and caring for the elderly were just two of the pivotal plots of the episode -- one that also dealt with the end-of-the-world drama that are the modern-day SATs, as well as a father who essentially gambled away his daughter's college dreams."

BROOKSIDE sold: Set goes under the hammer for £735,000
"The property comprises a cul-de-sac of 13 houses, some intercommunicating, each benefiting from a front and rear garden. Internally, the houses are in shell condition," the auction catalogue noted flatly. Almost as an afterthought, it added: "The houses were formerly used as the set of the Channel 4 BROOKSIDE television series."

A solid piece of soap history
Lesbian kisses, the cult that blew up a house, Sheila Grant’s rape . . . BROOKSIDE is chiefly remembered for the sensational storylines that periodically dominated the headlines. This provocation was deliberate. The show was on Channel 4, a huge audience — as BBC One and ITV had for EastEnders and Coronation Street — was not guaranteed. Phil Redmond, BROOKIE'S creator and one of television’s true originators, knew it was better to be talked about than not. The most obvious sign of Brookside’s radicalism is symbolized by yesterday’s sale: it was the first, and is still the only, soap opera to have a fully realized set of real houses.

Stocking stuffer idea: "Death In Daytime"
Eileen Davidson's (Ashley, THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS) centers on Alexis Peterson, a 20-year daytime soap veteran. Marcy, the new head writer of her show, hates her and is trying to phase her character out. The two have had numerous arguments, including one in which Alexis threw an Emmy at her. So when Marcy ends up dead, Alexis becomes the prime suspect.

Robins, formerly known as Sandra Ferguson, appeared on "BuzzWorthy Radio" last night.

Turner was a guest on "Stardish Radio" last night.

News Brief

INTERVIEW: DAYS OF OUR LIVES star Jay Kenneth Johnson
Nelson Branco interviewed Johnson whose contract will be up soon: "It’s simple, really. DAYS’ executive producer Ken Corday offered me a great deal to return. The contract’s for two years — and I have a few months left. Time has flown by. In retrospect, it was a brilliant idea on my part because of the writers’ strike. I’m happy where I’m at personally and professionally. Surprisingly, they haven’t asked me to re-sign yet."

Magazine Ad Pages: Down 9.2% Through August
The consumer magazine business, in a rough patch before, now appears to be falling off a cliff. Total magazine ad pages measured by the Publisher's Information Bureau are down 9.2% through August, compared to the same period last year. Virtually all the major publishers are feeling the pinch. Of 37 big publishing groups measured by TNS Media Intelligence, 32 or 86% have seen ad pages fall. For the 32 publishers experiencing declines, the average decline was 14% for the year to date.

In the top 10 publishers, ad pages are down
7.8% at Conde Nast (publisher of Vogue, GQ); 9.3% at Time Inc. (Time, People); 4.5% at Hearst (Good Housekeeping, Cosmopolitan); 7.3% at Bonnier (Popular Science, Field & Stream); 9.5% at Hachette Filipacchi (Elle, Car and Driver); 15.9% at Meredith (Better Homes and Gardens, Ladies' Home Journal); 4.5% at American Media (Star, Men's Fitness); and 20.4% at Source Interlink (Motor Trend, Soap Opera Weekly).

Tuesday night prime time: 90210 falls, FRINGE is average
According to Nielsen Media Research overnight numbers, FRINGE averaged a 3.2 rating/9 share in the demo from 8 p.m.-9:35 p.m., which Fox pointed out means that the numbers for the show will be approximate given the irregular running time.

FRINGE did build over its 90-plus minutes, averaging a 3.1 rating in its first half-hour and a 3.3 in its last half-hour or so.

In its second outing, 90210 mustered a 1.7/5, while the debut of Privileged drew a 1.3/3. 90210 was down significantly from the 2.6/7 it earned for its two-hour premiere the week before, which set a record for a CW premiere.

NBC and Apple are back in tune
NBC Universal ended its battle with Apple Inc. on Tuesday, restoring some of the most downloaded TV shows to the iTunes store.

With the return of such series as THE OFFICE, HEROES and 30 ROCK, the companies ended a feud that erupted last September over Apple's insistence on a $1.99 price for all shows. Analysts said the two appeared to be meeting in the middle, with Apple agreeing to allow a little flexibility but not giving NBC carte blanche to change the prices of shows.

Speaking of iTunes, check out the DAYS OF OUR LIVES episodes there.

"Rear of the Year" Award Winners Announced
It may have been crowned "Rear of the Year," but actress Jennifer Ellison today said she is not a fan of her bottom. The ex-BROOKSIDE actress beat off a host of shapely celebrities to be crowned the 26th Rear of the Year.

“It’s a huge honor because I don’t really like my bum,” she said. “Every girl has a hang-up about her bum so I am very honored and it’s flattering to be crowned Rear of the Year.”

Soap actors’ bottoms swept the board this year with CORONATION STREET star Ryan Thomas being honored for having the nicest male bum.

He plays builder Jason Grimshaw on the ITV soap and said, "I would like to thank my mum and dad. Without them, winning this fantastic award would not be possible, it brings a new meaning to the phrase builder’s bum.”

This year’s awards supports Jeans for Genes charity which helps fund research and care for children with genetic disorders.

Kelly Taylor's 90210 mom is now a priest
The Rev. Ann Gillespie of the Christ Church in Alexandria, Virginia didn't imagine ever returning to acting until she received a call from a casting agent a few months ago. "He said, 'You're written into an episode shooting next week; can you come?' " says Gillespie. "I said, 'I don't have any weddings next week, and so far no one's dead.'"

TRUE BLOOD tanks
With 1.44 million viewers, the premiere of Alan Ball's heavily marketed vampire drama drew less than half of JOHN FROM CINCINNATI premiere last year. But at least it had a Jessica Tuck appearance.

News Brief

Robin Scorpio Rising
As GENERAL HOSPITAL celebrates 45 years on air, Kimberly McCullough scrubs in to discuss the only groundbreaking and revolutionary storyline on soaps.

Fox411: SAG vs AFTRA, Martha gone from ATWT, GL a debacle?
The craziness at daytime dramas — soap operas — is continuing in a new direction. This one bears watching. Susan Flannery, the Emmy winning veteran star of THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL is apparently at the center of a controversy concerning which union — SAG or AFTRA — will cover soap actors once the two unions split. Flannery, according to many sources, went to SAG with complaints about AFTRA, Other actors from her show may have joined her in this insurgency. Certainly, soap actors get the worst treatment and are lowest on every totem pole. Recently, Procter & Gamble kicked out its biggest star, Martha Byrne, after 25 years, from CBS’s AS THE WORLD TURNS when she asked to be guaranteed a number of episodes in the coming year. At the same time, P&G’s GUIDING LIGHT on CBS has been turned into a debacle. To save money they’ve eliminated most sets and camera crew, letting hand held video operators film the actors outdoors and then edit the material on site. The result is the biggest mess ever seen on professional television, production wise. The GUIDING LIGHT actors should be protesting via their union. The question is: which one, SAG or AFTRA?

This day in history: First two half hour soaps premiere
In 1956, the first half-hour soap operas, AS THE WORLD TURNS and THE EDGE OF NIGHT premiered on CBS television.

AUDIO: Interview with GH star Tyler Christopher
Tyler Christopher (Nikolas, GENERAL HOSPITAL) appeared on "Buzzworthy Radio" to discuss his soap role and his upcoming improv event.

Martha Byrne takes the stage in "Other People's Money"
Recently departed AS THE WORLD TURNS star Martha Byrne (who last airs on April 22nd) will take the stage as Kate in "Other People's Money" running from May 1st to June 1st at the John W. Engeman Theater in Northport, New York.

VIDEO: Ex-DAYS star Lisa Rinna kissing a younger man?
TMZ reports: "Why would any smooth, sexy 20-something hook up with married 44-year-old mess Lisa Rinna? Yeah, we're not buying it either."

Morgan Fairchild Checks Out MEN IN TREES' "Morgan Fairchild"
The male-dense berg of Elmo gets a much-needed shot of womanhood when TV-serial icon Morgan Fairchild (SEARCH FOR TOMORROW, THE CITY) descends upon ABC's MEN IN TREES. Playing "Morgan Fairchild," the blonde beauty will seek to secure rights to Marin Frost's life story. TVGuide.com invited (the real) Fairchild to preview her visit to Alaska, tell Morgan apart from "Morgan," and reflect upon '80s fashions.

TVGuide.com: I want to run this by you: The soap opera GUIDING LIGHT is now taping on location using handheld cameras. Very groundbreaking, isn’t it?
Fairchild: [Laughs] Yeah, we only did that 13 years ago on THE CITY! It was a great idea then, and it's a great idea now, to broaden the scope of daytime shows.

Actors to begin contract talks April 15
Hollywood's main actors' union said on Tuesday it would begin talks on a new labor contract with the studios on April 15, setting the scene for a cliffhanger that could once again paralyze the movie and television industries. The Screen Actors Guild (SAG), which represents about 120,000 members, will negotiate a new three-year pact with the bargaining arm of the studios, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).

Man campaigns to bring BROOKSIDE to DVD
A Liverpool man is campaigning for the city’s ground-breaking soap opera BROOKSIDE to be released on DVD. Twenty-one-year old Lee Laddy – who was not even born when the series began – has already got 3,000 signatures for a petition to resurrect the Liverpool-based soap which was first screened on Channel 4 on November 2, 1982, and which became legendary for tackling gritty, socially challenging storylines.

"We set an initial target of 2,000 but we’re well past that now and we’ve been getting responses from all over the country," said support worker Lee, from Old Swan, who formed the on-line campaign group with his friend Danny Burton.

"Not only did it have some great storylines but it documents a part of Liverpool life and would make a great piece of social history."

Big Stars and Big Breaks
Before they became big-time celebs, some stars were starving artists struggling to make the rent. So what did they do when they finally landed their first big paycheck? Both Julianne Moore and James Earl Jones invested their first substantial chunk of cash in items for those they loved most. Moore beauty bought a "hugely expensive cashmere sweater" for her mom when she scored her gig on AS THE WORLD TURNS. And the GUIDING LIGHT star picked up a wedding ring for his first wife. "To me, it was a lot then," Jones says of the bauble, "but still it wasn’t very expensive." (His second wife got a much bigger one, Mrs. Jones No. 2 told Parade.)

The veteran producer Phil Redmond, creator of GRANGE HILL and producer of BROOKSIDE and HOLLYOAKS, spoke out angrily after the school series was axed by the corporation 30 years after it first aired. "The announcement comes as no shock following BBC Children's decision early last year to abandon viewers over 12 and concentrate its focus on nine-year-olds."
