'Search for Tomorrow' Ended 32 Years Ago Today: Cheers to 35 Years

Beloved daytime soap opera Search for Tomorrow ended its 35-year run on December 26, 1986. After more than three decades on CBS, the Procter & Gamble-produced drama moved in NBC in 1982 but failed to draw in viewers on peacock network.

In "A Complete, Concise Yearly History of TV Soap Operas" in 1978 for The Soap Box, John Genovese described attempts by CBS to launch a successful TV soap opera in 1951.

Then on September 3 of that year, CBS jumped on the bandwagon again with two new offerings. The first, The Egg and I, featured Pat Kirkland and Frank Craven in a serial adaptation of Betty's McDonald's book. Egg went rotten on August 1, 1952.

The other serial to make its appearance that day was a Procter & Gamble Production called Search for Tomorrow, created by Roy Winsor and headlining a B-movie starlet named Mary Stuart in the central role of beleaguered housewife Joanne Barron. Need we say that this became the longest-running serial on television, and that the B-movie starlet we mentioned is now Mary, Queen of Soaps?

Nelson Aspen, who played Albert Prange on SFT before becoming a production coordinator, described the final episode in a 2009 article for We Love Soaps.

Original cast member Mary Stuart, as Jo, played a final scene with her longtime costar Larry Haines, as Stu, beneath a Christmas tree. "What is it you're searching for?" he asked. "Tomorrow," she replied with a sad smile. "And I can't wait!" The camera moved away and so did the viewers...a few to its replacement, Capitol, but most gave up the genre altogether. Every time a soap "dies," fans wander farther and farther away from the medium.

The final episode of SFT, taped only two weeks before airing, revolved around the wedding of Jo's daughter, Patty...a character who debuted in Episode 1 and was portrayed by myriad actresses (including Guiding Light's Tina Sloan) over the decades. In the end it was Jacqueline Schultz (ex-Dee, As the World Turns). Only a handful of cast members had been there longer than a couple years, thanks to the desperate writing regimes who'd been butchering the show in ill-fated attempts to salvage the ratings. Besides Mary and Larry, only Marcia McCabe (Sunny) and David Forsyth (Hogan) had any significant tenure. Some of us who worked on the production staff had been there a lot longer. Many, in fact, were crew from the facility's previous occupant, Edge of Night...so they were dealing with pink slips and farewells all over again
"Search for Tomorrow came to us from CBS after 31 years, but the audience didn't come with it," Brian Frons, vice president for daytime programming at NBC, said after the show's cancellation was announced. "We, therefore, had to treat the show as a new one, not one with a long history."

Aspen recently shared the above photo that features him wearing a Search for Tomorrow t-shirt that was gifted by the show's former casting director. Marie Brossard. The shirt includes the show's final logo in the front and "Cheers to 35 Years" on the back.

At successful shows in New York, Los Angeles, Australia, London and more, Aspen included some wonderful special guests including former SFT co-star and friend, Anita Gillette (Wilma Holliday). The busy entertainment personality is taking to his popular interactive cabaret show on the high seas to perform in 2019 as part of Feinsten's/54 Below at Sea series, with concert dates in beautiful destinations around the world. His first cruise will kick off right after the Oscars on Azamara Club Cruises, with stops in Australia.

Where Are They Now: Brian Frons Is a Distinguished Visiting Professor at UCLA Anderson

Brian Frons at UCLA Anderson's 2016 Pulse Conference in February.
On December 2, 2011, ABC announced that its president of daytime Disney/ABC would be departing the company. After micromanaging the network's daytime soap operas and driving their ratings to record lows, and a failed attempt at turning the promising SOAPnet channel into a watered down version of Lifetime, ABC finally realized enough damage had been done. Unfortunately it was too late to save two beloved series, All My Children and One Life to Live. ABC's lone remaining daytime drama, General Hospital, was on its last legs when Frons was shown the door after nine years at the network, five as president, plus five years of running SOAPnet. So what has Frons been up to since leaving the network (probably with a very nice payout)? Since 2014, he has been a "distinguished visiting professor" at the UCLA Anderson School of Management.

According to its website, Anderson is "the first top tier MBA program to offer an Entertainment Management Specialization. Our curriculum is designed to blend theory and practical application. Our world class faculty + leading industry executives provide student’s a broad understanding of the strategy and operating principles that drive the individual sectors of the media, entertainment & sports industries."

Frons is currently teaching two courses: "Making Creativity Profitable in Entertainment & Technology" and "Content Creation in Global Digital Age"

In February at UCLA Anderson’s 2016 Pulse Conference, Frons hosted a panel discussion featuring Jim Lanzone, president and CEO of CBS interactive; Tony Goncalves, senior vice president of strategy and business development at AT&T; Eric Johnson, executive vice president of global multimedia sales for ESPN; and Chris Moseley, chief marketing officer for game show network, to discuss the current media landscape and their views for the future.

You can watch the Frons-led discussion in the video below.

BRIAN FRONS: Please - Tell Me He's Not Working for Prospect Park Now!

For weeks I've been wrestling with a big industry question mark that just keeps getting bigger (and more twisted). Rumors - some from reliable sources - about a certain former executive and his improbable (or is it) present consulting gig.

LinkedIn puts me in the same circles as a certain Mr. Brian Frons - you know how it works. Algorithms! Anyway, LinkedIn keeps telling me the former ABC (and CBS and NBC) daytime chief is among the people I "may know". Since being ousted from ABC, Frons has worked for his own Frons Consulting, LLC company. LinkedIn wants to keep me abreast of his career. And what is he up to?

FLASHBACK: DAYS OF OUR LIVES Hits #1 (1988)

Wedding lifts `Days' to No. 1 soaps rating

By Robert Feder
Chicago Sun-Times
August 17, 1988

There's nothing like an old-fashioned wedding to boost the ratings of a soap opera.

In the case of DAYS OF OUR LIVES, the long-awaited nuptials of Patch Johnson and Kayla Brady helped catapult the NBC daytime drama to the top spot in the ratings for the first time in 14 years. Since the star-crossed lovers (played by Stephen Nichols and Mary Beth Evans) exchanged vows on July 25, DAYS OF OUR LIVES has overtaken ABC's GENERAL HOSPITAL as the most popular soap in the country.

FLASHBACK: Mirth Joins Melodrama In Soaps 1989 - Brian Frons, Jill Farren Phelps, Agnes Nixon

SANTA BARBARA's Joe Marinelli
MIRTH JOINS MELODRAMA IN SOAPS

By Libby Slate
Sun Sentinel
April 16, 1989

Near-death experiences as depicted on television usually are serious affairs, with beckoning white lights and comforting welcomes by previously deceased relatives. But on a recent episode of the NBC soap opera SANTA BARBARA, in which gunshot victim Mason Capwell (Lane Davies) unexpectedly found himself in heaven, he was greeted by none other than Joan Crawford, now toiling as God's receptionist -- and who was played by the cross-dressing character Bunny, in full drag.

TIMELINE: The Rise and Fall of Prospect Park, or, The Martyrdom of ALL MY CHILDREN & ONE LIFE TO LIVE

Admit it. Only six months ago, the phrase "Prospect Park" conjured images of trees and picnics and not much else. Today, it's practically a synonym for "cryptic corporation" or even "broken dreams." Mysterious, elusive, at times even inscrutable, the company (and its temporary role as soap savior) never quite felt 100% real.

As we reflect on the ups and downs of 2011, Prospect Park's shadow looms large over the daytime drama landscape. On the one hand, they cajoled millions of fans into seriously considering watching their most treasured soaps on the web, and that is surely progress of some sort. On the other hand, we cannot forgive them for corrupting the final weeks of both ALL MY CHILDREN and ONE LIFE TO LIVE. They have stolen our hopes for a sense of closure as we mourn two fallen icons of soap opera history.

What happened? In the following timeline, We Love Soaps pieces together the rise and fall of Prospect Park. Sometimes we still wonder, "Did that just happen?" It definitely did, but the next question is harder to answer: why?

DEVILS: We Knew Frons; Alternative is Dummer

When it comes to the future of ABC's scripted dramas, what's bigger news than the departure of Brian Frons? The promotion of Vicki Dummer, the woman who was honored as one of 2010's top five most powerful people in reality TV by The Hollywood Reporter (THR).

One of the criteria was "Greenlight power. Can the person get a show on the air?" Apparently, she's got the power. Unfortunately, for every new show, there's one that was cancelled. Can we infer that Dummer is equally well-known for "making room" for her unscripted, alternative, "reality" shows?

From THR:
Dummer and Saade didn't have any freshman breakouts this season; it just seemed that way. "Dancing With the Stars" and "The Bachelor" hit series highs, and "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," "Wife Swap" and "Wipeout" have held up, making up for slight disappointments like "Shark Tank" and "Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution." "We're constantly putting on fresh paint and tweaking the engines," Saade says. (In the case of "Stars," that meant wearing less clothing and bringing on a new co-host, Brooke Burke.) The duo credit their Midwest roots for their sense of what clicks with reality audiences. "Vicki and I both grew up in Ohio," Saade says. "That gives us the perspective of America."

OUT: Grim Reaper of Soaps Brian Frons Leaves ABC Disney (Fired?); Scythe Passed to Unscripted Advocate Vicki Dummer; What is Times Square Studios?

Another bombshell day for ABC Daytime, this time the announcement that Brian Frons will leave when his contract expires in January. "Brian Frons" instantly started trending on Twitter when the news was announced. After three daytime dramas were canceled under his leadership, soap opera fans everywhere rejoiced (at least in our Twitter feed). Read the ABC press release below.

SURVEY: Who Do You Blame for the Loss of ONE LIFE TO LIVE and ALL MY CHILDREN?

ALL MY CHILDREN and ONE LIFE TO LIVE will not return with new web episodes this winter. In fact, it seems they may both be gone for good. Something clearly went very wrong.

Not everyone is equally responsible. In your opinion, which of the parties involved had a hand in demise of not one, but two American institutions?

NEWS ROUNDUP: Showbiz411 Blasts Brian Frons! Would You Watch An AMC Web Show? 'Hitler' Soap Changes Name

Showbiz411 wonders if GENERAL HOSPITAL will kill off Robin Scorpio, blasts Brian Frons for destroying the ABC soaps
"Congratulations to Brian Frons, the ABC exec who over saw the dismantling. He masterfully figured out ways to drive fans from the shows in order to lower their ratings, and kill them. The good news is, whoever’s left watching ABC daytime will know how to cook a chicken and how to execute a wine reduction. This is valuable information."

WATCH: Hilarious Brian Frons "Tribute" Song

Hostess "Dame" Robin Strasser and the Imperial Court of New York welcomed philanthropists large and small this past Friday, November 4, to a unique fundraising event in Manhattan. Daytime Meets Night Time: A Night of Cabaret (benefiting Jan Hus Presbyterian Church & LifeBeat, the Music Industry Fights HIV) featured an amazing assortment of talent, with many of the acts coming from a television background. We Love Soaps was proud to attend.

Ilene Kristen, Lea DeLaria, BethAnn Bonner and many more shared their unique gifts, but we found a performance by Gender Illusionist Doris Dear most compelling: she brought down the house with a song skewering Brian Frons, President, Daytime, Disney ABC/Television Group. We had to share it with you. Tell us what you think in the Comment section below.

"I am thrilled to bring this stellar team of experts to THE REVOLUTION" said Frons. "I am confident that the combination of these co-hosts, along with our producing partners at 3 Ball Productions/Eyeworks USA who specialize in lifestyle transformations, will resonate with our viewers."

Brian Frons Promotes CHEW Creator to Vice President, Programming & Development, ABC Daytime

Randall Barone, the man behind the creation, development, and launch of THE CHEW, was officially promoted today. It's an interesting move, with questionable timing, given the first week's ratings and critical response. Barone has several Emmy nods from his days at GOOD MORNING AMERICA and THE OPRAH WINFREY SHOW, where he was senior supervising producer over ten years ago. He's been working on THE CHEW for about a year and a half, and reports directly to Brian Frons, president, Daytime, Disney/ABC Television Group. You can read the official release from ABC Television Network below.

Barbara Walters Praises ABC On THE VIEW Season Premiere; THE CHEW Co-Host Appears

Barbara Walters and the other co-hosts of ABC's morning show, THE VIEW, returned Tuesday to talk about what they did on their time off this summer.

Whoopi Goldberg welcomed the audience to the new season and then praised the show's new set and thanked the crew for its building and design. Then Barbara Walters showed the full-page ad that ABC took out in the New York Times to celebrate the show's 15th season. She then proceeded to thanked "Brian Frons, Anne Sweeney and the people at ABC" for their support. Must be nice to be a show supported by ABC Daytime.

Then Sherri Shepherd and Joy Behar talked about their summer weddings.  With Shepherd, it was too much information as usual.

ALL MY CHILDREN's Susan Lucci doesn't mince words in the new epilogue added to her memoir, "All My Life," which was included in the new paperback version of the book.

Lucci rips ABC Daytime chief Brian Frons for both the decisions he made that led to the show's demise and his seeming glee in delivering the news.

FLASHBACK: Will 'Search' Run Out Of Tomorrows? (1981)

WILL SEARCH' RUN OUT OF TOMORROWS?

By Terry Ann Knopf
Boston Globe
October 30, 1981

The soap opera Search for Tomorrow is in serious danger of being canceled by CBS. The Proctor & Gamble-owned show celebrated its 30th anniversary Sept. 3, making it the oldest soap on television. Unfortunately, SEARCH has been plagued by anemic ratings in recent years and is the weakest soap opera in the CBS daytime lineup.

During the most recent Nielsen ratings, for the week of Oct. 16, CBS soaps ranked as follows: Guiding Light (No. 4), The Young and the Restless (No. 5), As the World Turns (No. 7) and Search for Tomorrow (No. 8).

FLASHBACK: NBC Cancels 'Search for Tomorrow' (1986)

No More Tomorrow's for TV's 'Search'

By Kevin Goldman
Newsday
November 5, 1986

Mary Stuart has seen her share of trouble. In 35 years, she's been married four times and widowed three times, all on daytime television. This time, it looks like she's in a fix no script-writer can get her out of.

NBC announced yesterday that Search for Tomorrow, television's longest-running soap opera, would be canceled. The 30-minute daily program will have its final airing Dec. 26.

So ends the tale that began in the mythical town of Henderson and helped launch the careers of Morgan Fairchild, Susan Sarandon, Jill Clayburgh, Kevin Bacon, Lee Grant and Wayne Rogers, among others. The show, which moved to NBC in 1982, will be replaced by the game show Wordplay beginning Dec. 29 at 12:30 p.m.

NEWS ROUNDUP: AMC On THE VIEW! Swallow The Chew? Sarah Michelle's Character On AMC Will Be...

Sarah Michelle Gellar's role on ALL MY CHILDREN revealed
According to Eva La Rue: "Sarah saw the script before I did and texted me to say, 'Wait until you see this, you are going to laugh.' It was cheesy brilliance! Sarah actually plays a psych patient who thinks she is Erica Kane's daughter. I can't wait for fans to see it!"

THE VIEW will feature a full hour of ALL MY CHILDREN on September 23
Emmy winner Susan Lucci (Erica) will co-host the show, along with View regulars Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Sherri Shepherd.
