NEWS: EASTENDERS Scene to Mention Nelson Mandela; Thorsten Kaye on Making B&B's Ridge Forrester His Own; Regina King; Sutton Foster Pilot; SCANDAL Season 3

EASTENDERS films tribute scene to Nelson Mandela
A special scene in Monday's episode will see two regular characters (Carol Jackson and Denise Fox) discuss their memories of Mandela's release from prison. It was one of the key moments of Mandela's life, remembered around the world as a long-coveted victory against his oppressors. Mandela later became president of South Africa, and oversaw the country's transition from apartheid. He died on Thursday, aged 95, after years of declining health.

Producers at the long-running soap said they chose to add the scene into the existing show, saying they aim "to reflect big news stories and events".

The show's spokesperson said: "Nelson Mandela had such a huge effect on so many people's lives that we felt it was important to reflect the impact his death has had."

Thorsten Kaye on playing THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL's new Ridge Forrester
"I have tried to make this role my own. I’m playing Ridge as a man making solid decisions based on a set of values that’s constant. Otherwise, I don’t know who this person is. The person can’t be fluid to the story, the story has to be fluid to the person. I couldn’t do what was done before, good or bad. If people don’t buy it, that’s okay. I tried. There are six flights from LAX every day."

BUNHEADS Sutton Foster to Star in TV Land's Darren Star Pilot
Based on the novel of the same name by Pamela Redmond Satran, YOUNGER tells the story of a suddenly single New Jersey housewife and mother in her early 40s who, unable to restart her career, decides to lie about her age and successfully passes herself off as a 20-something. Armed with a makeover and new résumé, she wins a position at the city's hottest publishing company.

Shonda Rhimes Talks SCANDAL's Brutal Season 3 and the Issue of Likability
"To me it felt the natural progression of Huck’s character. If Quinn’s gonna do these things, then Huck is gonna do what Huck does. I try not to make the characters bend to our will. If I’ve set up a world in which this is what Huck does, and this is the way Huck treats people who are traitors, and this is how Huck protects Olivia, then that’s what he’d have to do to Quinn as well."

SCANDAL Season 3 Episode Order Trimmed in Wake of Kerry Washington's Pregnancy News
The network gave no official explanation for the cutback, but it’s safe to say the decision was made in response to the real-life pregnancy of leading lady Kerry Washington. The actress’ spring due date would’ve made shooting those final four episodes next to impossible.

A BREAKING BAD Snow Globe That Shakes Blue Crystals Onto A Winnebago in the Albuquerque Desert
What better way to show someone you love them than with a snow globe that shakes blue crystals onto a Winnebago in the Albuquerque desert? This glass diorama recalls the all too familiar BREAKING BAD scene depicting Walt and Jesse’s very humble beginnings. The Blue Sky Snow Globe is available for purchase at Firebox.

Regina King Joins FX Series THE STRAIN
THE STRAIN is a high-concept thriller that tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll), the head of the Centers for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called on to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. King will play Ruby Wain, the smart and accomplished manager of philandering rock star Gabriel Bolivar (Jack Kesy).

Brazil’s television dream machine fueled by 7,000 people
“In 2012, Globo marketed 59 products equivalent to 25,000 hours of content in 33 different languages for 92 countries. In the first semester of this year, 42 titles were marketed for 123 countries.” The star series of 9:00 pm, “Avenida Brasil,” reflects the 40 million Brazilians who have recently joined the middle class.

An Encore for the ‘Smash’ That Wasn’t
With the TV series behind them (the last episode was shown in May), several of its principals are now set to reunite at the 54 Below club in Manhattan for three sold-out concerts on Sunday and Monday. The ostensible purpose is to perform “Hit List,” the never fully shown, vaguely “Rent”-like rock musical from SMASH.

NEWS: Lady Gaga Befriends EASTENDERS Star June Brown; How Subway Sandwiches Devoured TV; Have Supernatural Shows Made TV Deaths Boring?

June Brown played Dot Cotton on EASTENDERS for
many years.
Lady Gaga Befriends EASTENDERS Star June Brown
Lady Gaga and British soap opera star June Brown have struck up a friendship after hitting it off while filming their guest appearances on THE GRAHAM NORTON SHOW.

Brown was on the show promoting her new autobiography, "Before The Year Dot," but after consuming a few too many glasses of wine the audience struggled to understand her rambles.

Gaga, who was advertising her new album "ARTPOP," could see the difficulties the viewers were having and jumped to June's defence, saying: "We talk the same language. I understand you."

CBS dispute lost Time Warner Cable 306,000 subscribers
Those 306,000 customers represent nearly 10 percent of those affected when a dispute over fees knocked the broadcaster off Time Warner Cable customers' channel lineup in several big cities. During a quarterly earnings call this morning, Time Warner Cable executives said that profit had dipped 34 percent as a result of the dispute.

NEWS: R.J. Mitte joins SWITCHED AT BIRTH; Julianne Moore Receives Star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

BREAKING BAD actor R.J. Mitte joins SWITCHED AT BIRTH
He will play Campbell, a pre-med college student paralyzed by a snowboarding accident who works at the free clinic alongside Daphne (Katie Leclerc).

Creator Lizzy Weiss also tweeted out the casting Thursday morning to her followers on Twitter, writing, "We are thrilled to have him."

THE WEST WING Government Shutdown Episode Is Frighteningly Familiar
In fifth season episode "Shutdown," the fiscal year is nearing its September 30 close. Democratic President Josiah Bartlet (Martin Sheen) and House Speaker Jeff Haffley (Steven Culp) have verbally agreed on budget cuts of 1 percent, mostly from social programs. However, at the last moment, the Republican speaker demands 3 percent in cuts that would slash funding on education programs, clean energy research, and other issues near and dear to the president’s heart.

NEWS: Jason Thompson on Robin's Return To GENERAL HOSPITAL; Corbin Bleu Getting Into A Rhythm; EASTENDERS' The Queen Vic Under New Management; Badass Ming-Na Wen

Jason Thompson on Kimberly McCullough's return to GENERAL HOSPITAL as Robin Scorpio Drake
"There are a lot of fans that love us together; which is a testament to the writing and the show as a whole," Thompson told Daytime Confidential. "Kimberly and I brought an energy together and it really worked. It really starts with good story. And we've had some great storylines together. People really want to watch. They relate to the characters, who have been through a lot."

Corbin Bleu's DANCING WITH THE STARS Blog: Getting Into A Rhythm
"I definitely was more frustrated this week. I’m very much a perfectionist, and with the clock ticking down to performance day with me still struggling with most of the routine I was beginning to panic. We were at the top of the leaderboard last week and the pressure is on! Luckily my partner (my secret weapon) is a nitpicking Russian drill sergeant who refuses to take anything less from me than my best. I’m still scared as hell of this dance, but I think I’m as ready as I can be to wow the judges."

EASTENDERS' The Queen Vic 'under new management' and Danny Dyer and Kellie Bright have the keys
Danny Dyer and Kellie Bright will be joining Albert Square. This coming Christmas, Dyer will come in as Shirley Carter's brother Mick and his family move to E20. This will make them the first family to arrive and immediately take over The Queen Victoria since EASTENDERS began.

Speaking of the role, Dyer was keen to start this new acting path.

"I'm so excited about starting a new chapter in my career and I cannot wait to become part of the East End family.

BREAKING BAD Finale Illegally Downloaded More Than 500,000 Times in 12-Hour Period
According to TorrentFreak, what has happened online in the first 12 hours after the episode aired is unprecedented for the hit drama. TorrentFreak also reports that the series is a contender for being the year's most pirated TV show.

Ming-Na Wen Goes Badass on MARVEL'S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.
"May is still dealing with scars from her days as a soldier, most of which I don't know about yet. S.H.I.E.L.D. agents are immersed in high levels of espionage and witness shocking things on the level of THE X-FILES and it's all so confidential they can't share it. So, it's weird. They're real insiders who know all the secrets, yet that makes them outsiders. That's why this new team becomes such a family. They need each other. They comfort each other."

Baltimore native and former AS THE WORLD TURNS actress Peyton List goes from MAD MEN to THE TOMORROW PEOPLE
"It's an incredible opportunity for me," List says of her role as Cara Coburn, the female leader of the outcast tribe living in an abandoned subway station. "I've never done a series where I've had this much responsibility in terms of carrying so much. But I'm also enjoying doing it. I can't say it's completely foreign, because I have done other shows. But it is definitely a new experience for me in terms of anything I've done in my career."

Soap Stars Take Part In Light The Night Walk
THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL's Linsey Godfrey (Caroline), National Spokesperson for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS), will be participating in the annual Light The Night Walk in Los Angeles on October 5, 2013. A cancer survivor herself, Godfrey shares, “It’s not a strenuous walk. It’s a symbolic walk, which is really beautiful. I am a celebrity ambassador, along with Jack Wagner (ex-Nick, B&B; ex-Frisco, GH) and Nadia Bjorlin (Chloe, DAYS) and Brandon Beemer (ex-Owen, B&B)."

New adventure of ALL MY CHILDREN alum and Manhattanites star Aiden Turner
Turner is one of the driving forces behind Ty, a device designed to keep track of frequently lost items.

BREAKING BAD and MARVEL'S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Top GetGlue Chart for the Week of September 23-29

BREAKING BAD Series Finale Delivers 10.3 Million Viewers, Including 6.7 Million Adults 18-49, a Record for the Iconic Series

AMC's BREAKING BAD capped its historic run last night, delivering a series-record 10.3 million viewers, including 6.7 million adults 18-49. Ratings for the final episode were up 300% over last year's finale, demonstrating the remarkable growth of this iconic series. An expanded one-hour TALKING BAD aftershow delivered 4.4 million viewers, including 2.9 million adults 18-49.

"BREAKING BAD is simply unique," said Charlie Collier, AMC president. "It all starts with Vince Gilligan who really only ever asked for one thing - the opportunity to end the show on his own terms. That is exactly what Vince did last night and, as always, brilliantly so. Congratulations to Vince and to every single person involved in this remarkable journey. We're proud that AMC will forever be known as the birthplace and home of this iconic show and, at the same time, we tip our Heisenberg hat to the fans who made this a truly shared experience."

Sunday Night Ratings: ONCE UPON A TIME, REVENGE, THE GOOD WIFE Down From Last Year

Even shirtless Justin Hartley and Josh Bowman couldn't help the
REVENGE ratings on Sunday. DVRs numbers should help. From a
story standpoint, it looks like the show is back on track.
The NFL game between the New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons averaged topped Sunday night in Fast National ratings, of course. The more surprising numbers came from every single broadcast television premiere, which was down from last season.

According to THR, ABC's ONCE UPON A TIME brought in the network's biggest numbers with a 2.6 rating among adults 18-49 at 8 p.m. That's down a steep 35 percent from last fall's opener. REVENGE, down about 25 percent, averaged a 2.5 rating in the key demo. Both shows saw strong DVR growth throughout their sophomore runs, so those numbers will likely be boosted significantly in Live+Three Day returns.

BETRAYAL did not buck the trend of soft debuts in the network's troubled 10 p.m. hour. The series premiere averaged a 1.5 rating in the key demo, giving ABC an average 2.0 adults rating and 6.7 million viewers for the night. This was down 29 percent from the premiere of 666 PARK AVENUE in 2012.

NEWS: BREAKING BAD Ends; REVENGE, ONCE UPON A TIME, HOMELAND Showrunners Talk Return; Bryan Dattilo; Colin Egglesfield; Chris Carmack; James Pickens Jr.; Avoiding Spoilers

BREAKING BAD, the AMC saga of a meth lord, ends strongly by tying up its loose ends and drawing from its main character an admission that sets the series free
Not only did Vince Gilligan's five-season, hyper-violent prose poem to midlife male frustration tie up virtually every loose end in sight, it contained the Holy Grail of all storytelling: an Actual Moment of Truth. And not just this particular story's truth, but one that extended to the beloved and bloated genre Gilligan both elevated and mocked.

"I did it for me. I liked it. I was good at it. And I was really ... I was alive."

[SPOILER ALERT]

In the end, BREAKING BAD was a bit of a cheat. The strongest moments of the final season came as Walt realized that great truism so often underscored in stories like his: Once you introduce evil into your life, you cannot control it. In the end, though, Walter White was triumphant. His money would go to his children, his enemies were dead, his foster son freed.

But the only things he was allowed to touch in farewell were his infant daughter and the equipment in his lab. And as he finally surrendered to his choices and himself, it was easy to tell which he loved more.

And that he died knowing it.

Vince Gilligan explains BREAKING BAD's final scene and reveals the rejected alternatives
"We didn’t feel an absolute need for Walt to expire at the end of the show. Our gut told us it was right. As the writers and I worked through all these different possibilities, it felt right, but I don’t think it was a necessity for us. There was a version we kicked around where Walt is the only one who survives, and he’s standing among the wreckage and his whole family is destroyed. That would be a very powerful ending but very much a kick-in-the-teeth kind of ending for the viewers. We talked about a version where Jesse kills Walt. We talked about a version where Walt more or less gets away with it. There’s no right or wrong way to do this job — it’s just a matter of: You get as many smart people around you as possible in the writers room, and I was very lucky to have that."

Sorry, You Can’t Avoid Spoilers Anymore
The major problem with avoiding spoilers in 2013: A lot of the audience isn't trying to. For all of the talk about DVRs and segmented viewing and death of the monoculture, we still really enjoy a Television Event. Everyone wants a viewing community, with hundreds of recaps and GIFs and witty jokes to make us feel like we're not alone on the couch. So when an opportunity like the Breaking Bad finale presents itself, the community goes hog-wild. That is not going to change anytime soon, and unless you're one of the sad souls stuck on season three, it's actually kind of fun. So just think of television finales like the Super Bowl: You're either going to watch with everyone, or you're going to hear about it all week from everyone else. Acceptance is the first step to not being so angry all the time.

REVENGE Reset: New Showrunner Sunil Nayar On Going Back to Basics With Season 3 Premiere
"Last season’s was so moody and almost ethereal. The audience knew something was going to happen, but they weren’t sure what. We wanted show them exactly happens to Emily Thorne and for it to be something that feels very definitive. You still don't know who it is that pulled the trigger and why it happens – so those are the more fun questions to answer."

NEWS: Jason Connery to GENERAL HOSPITAL; Primetime Emmys Defend Choice Of Cory Monteith For Individual Tribute

Backstage: Can the Internet Really Save Soap Operas?
Roger Newcomb, editorial director of the website We Love Soaps, said part of the problem was that Prospect Park prioritized actors over writers.

“They hired pretty much everyone from behind the scenes of the daytime soap world,” he said. “I wish they could have had a mix of some of these really brilliant indie producers or directors or writers mixed in who know how to really tell stories for the Web.”

Jason Connery visiting GENERAL HOSPITAL
Jason Connery, son of film legend James Bond actor Sean Connery, will be appearing on GENERAL HOSPITAL as Sebastian, Franco's art dealer. Look for the younger Connery to first appear on Wednesday, October 2, and then return for a second go-round the first week of November.

Primetime Emmys Exec Producer Defends Choice Of Cory Monteith For Individual Tribute
"Cory’s appeal was to maybe a little different generation than some of the others, and we felt they needed to be represented," Ehrlich said, reminding the reporters Monteith was "just 31" when he died under "very tragic circumstances." "It was important to be responsive to younger viewers, to whom Cory Monteith meant as much as the other four individuals meant to their own generations. We made the choice it was important to have, as part of these segments." Ehrlich admitted that when the decision was made to include Monteith, "there was discussion about the fact that this probably is going to become an interesting topic of conversation. We stand by what we’re doing."

BREAKING BAD Tops GetGlue Chart for the Week of September 9-15, 2013

NEWS: Kristen Alderson, Derek Krantz, Chris Carmack, Rachel Melvin, Emily Alyn Lind, Ryan Serhant

GENERAL HOSPITAL's Kristen Alderson featured on Philadelphia Eagles "Celebrity Corner" feature
"I’m a true Philadelphian, even though I live in Los Angeles now. The main concern we had as a family when I moved out here – I have been here for almost two years – was making sure I found a place to watch Eagles games. Fortunately, I heard about a place called "The Shack" in Santa Monica and we went there and watched the games in a packed bar with other Eagles fans. Everyone was doing our 'E-A-G-L-E-S, EAGLES' chants. It was so much fun! My brother isn't 21, though, so we had to find another place. Fortunately, my boyfriend moved down the street from me and he’s got a 60-inch TV, so my family and I watch it with him now."

BREAKING BAD ratings set another record
Sunday’s nights stunning “Ozymandias” episode of the AMC series delivered 6.4 million viewers. That number includes 4.1 million adults 18-49. The hour also inspired 604,765 tweets.
