Obba Babatundé and Anna Maria Horsford Returning to 'The Bold and the Beautiful' October 22

Obba Babatundé and Anna Maria Horsford
Obba Babatundé and Anna Maria Horsford are returning to The Bold and the Beautiful on October 22, when Julius and Vivienne Avant move to Los Angeles.

Julius is not a bum, or an idiot," Babatundé tells TV Insider. "This is an intelligent, articulate man."

Is Julius looking to get his hands on some of the Forrester fortune?

"I don’t see it that way," Babatundé explains. "I’m seeing the consistency of the man. He’s trying his best to not let his family be broken up. Where we’re going with this potential surrogacy story is powerful and exciting. It’s all up for grabs."

When Will A Black Woman Win in the Lead Actress Category at the Daytime Emmys?

Vinessa Antoine, Karla Mosley, Reign Edwards, Sal Stowers, Mishael Morgan and Brytni Sarpy.
Viola Davis made history on Sunday, becoming the first African-American actress to take home a Primetime Emmy Award for outstanding lead actress in a drama series for her role on How to Get Away with Murder. It took 67 years. When it comes to afternoon programming, we're still waiting.

Below is the list of the lead actress winners over the past 42 years at the Daytime Emmys. Sadly, there haven't been that many women of color even nominated, and none that won. All My Children's brilliant Debbi Morgan was nominated three times for her portrayal of Dr. Angie Hubbard. She won in the supporting actress category in 1989, tied with Santa Barbara's Nancy Lee Grahn. Grahn faced a social media backlash last night and today after insensitive comments during Davis' historic Emmys win.

Christel Khalil, Anna Maria Horsbord, Sonya Eddy and Aloma Wright.
The actress with the best show to break through in daytime at the 2016 Daytime Emmys is probably Karla Mosley, who has given one outstanding performance after another this year as Maya Avant on The Bold and the Beautiful.

Viola Davis gave a moving acceptance speech that captured her historic win well:

"'In my mind, I see a line. And over that line, I see green fields and lovely flowers and beautiful white women with their arms stretched out to me, over that line. But I can’t seem to get there no how. I can’t seem to get over that line.'

"That was Harriet Tubman in the 1800s. And let me tell you something: The only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity.

"You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there. So here’s to all the writers, the awesome people that are Ben Sherwood, Paul Lee, Peter Nowalk, Shonda Rhimes, people who have redefined what it means to be beautiful, to be sexy, to be a leading woman, to be black.

"And to the Taraji P. Hensons, the Kerry Washingtons, the Halle Berrys, the Nicole Beharies, the Meagan Goods, to Gabrielle Union: Thank you for taking us over that line. Thank you to the Television Academy. Thank you."

Obba Babatundé & Anna Maria Horsford Are Fantastic New Additions to 'The Bold and the Beautiful'

Anna Maria Horsford and Obba Babatundé play Vivienne and Julius Avant.
Monday's episode of CBS soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful ended with a powerful scene between Maya Avant (Karla Mosley) and her parents, Julius (Obba Babatundé) and Vivienne (Anna Maria Horsford). Mosley has been giving Emmy worthy performances all year as Maya, who revealed she was transgender after her sister, Nicole (Reign Edwards), came to Los Angeles. The additions of Julius and Vivienne have added a whole new dimension to a story now about the entire Avant family.

While it's common to hear complaints about "newbies" on soaps taking airtime from beloved vets, watching Babatundé and Horsford as parents struggling to accept their daughter has been compelling viewing. To be honest, I have enjoyed their scenes in recent days more than those from actors I have been watching in the same role for decades on other daytime dramas. Both the new B&B actors were perfectly cast and bring a fascinating depth to their roles, and new point of view to a storyline that was already fresh, entertaining and educational.

The writing for Brad Bell's team at B&B has been outstanding as well in recent months, including standouts Patrick Mulcahey, Adam Dusevoir and Michele Val Jean.

"I'm not asking you to be different," Maya told her father on Monday, in an excellent Mulcahey script. "I'm not asking you to march in the transgender pride parade or read books about people like me or even to agree with all of the choices that I've made. I'm just asking you to respect the fact that I had to make them... and that I have a right to be happy."

Vivienne and Julius started to leave but Julius stopped when he saw how hurt Maya was, and walked back over to her.

"Stand up. Stand up, Maya," Julius told her. As she stood, he gave Maya a reason for hope. "Look in my eyes. I will try. I am set in my ways, in my thinking. But the one thing...that I will never stop being...is your father. So I will... try to get to know the woman that you've become... and... the life that you've created for yourself. I'll try and find a way to -- to fit in. This... I can promise you. What do you say? How 'bout some sugar for your old man?"

Maya could do nothing but cry, saying "Daddy..."

I cried too.

Anna Maria Horsford (Amen, The Wayans Bros) and Obba Babatundé ("Dreamgirls") have joined the cast of CBS soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful as Maya's parents, Vivienne and Julius Avant, according to TV Insider.

Maya's mother and father will come to Los Angeles looking for their youngest daughter, Nicole (Reign Edwards), to take her away from Maya's influence. Maya's past comes flooding into her present when she is faced with the parents who rejected her.

Horsford will make her first appearance on July 3, followed by Babatundé on July 9. Both are set for at least 15 episodes, though their gigs will likely extend well beyond that.

Horsford previously played Clara, one of Holly's cellmates, on Guiding Light in 1979. Babatundé has had recurring stints on All My Children (Rusty), One Life to Live (Clay) and The Young and the Restless (Carter).

"I personally know several transgender people but I never really thought of things from the parents' perspective," says Horsford. "The audience has heard Maya's point of view about what went on in the family. Now it's time to get Mom and Dad's side of things! Maya may think her parents never loved her, but that's her perception."
