Ron Hale: The We Love Soaps Interview, Part One

Any ABC soap fan worth their bubbles recognizes the names "Roger Coleridge" and "Mike Corbin."  These are two staples of ABC daytime history brought to vivid life by the talented and fascinating actor Ron Hale.  But how does he see the impact of his creations, and what is the next step in his long career?  The answers to all of these are coming up over this series of interviews.  Please enjoy!

In Part One, Hale discusses his pre-RYAN'S HOPE career, including hanging out with Robert Redford.  For what role did he have to gain 40 pounds? Find out below!

We Love Soaps: I am so glad to speak with you Ron and to use this space to celebrate your contributions to daytime.  You recently came in [at #47 on] our Best 50 Soap Actors Ever list.  This was based on rankings by 15 different soap critics and journalists who have covered the genre over the past 35 years.
Ron Hale: That is quite something.  One of our directors came up to me the other day and said, “Hey, you made the Top 50!”  A lot of people saw that and heard about that.

We Love Soaps: Let’s go back 41 years ago to when a young actor starting out was cast on SEARCH FOR TOMORROW
Ron Hale: Which I remember basically nothing about.  Honest to God, it was such a short stint.  The main thing I remember was being in awe about how they did this thing with three cameras so quickly.  A lot of the older actors had been for years, it was such a learning experience.  Learning to tone everything down, I remember, because I was not on stage.

50 Greatest Soap Opera Actors: Honorable Mention

Now that the countdown of the 50 Greatest Soap Opera Actors has concluded, We Love Soaps would like to pay tribute to another set of wonderful actors. These men received multiple votes from our panel and just missed the countdown. For us, it's more about honoring their work that has touched so many lives more than a specific ranking. Join us in paying tribute to these fine talents and share your memories/videos/photos in the comments section. Comments from our panel are included where applicable.

FORMER SOAP ACTORS

NAME: George Reinholt
SOAP ROLES: Steve Frame, ANOTHER WORLD (1968-1975, 1989); Tony Lord, ONE LIFE TO LIVE (1975-1977); Erik Fulda, THE SECRET STORM (1967-1968)

Alan Carter: Unconventional to say the least, Reinholt still became a sex symbol cause what Steve and later Tony on OLTL exuded on screen was confidence and romance. In lesser hands it might have come off....cheesy? But even the fact he made the rather one note Jacquie Courtney (sorry Jacquie) alive on screen says something about ...chemistry making no sense on paper.

Connie Passalacqua Hayman (Marlena De Lacroix): Hammy and handsome to the max, his uber posturing Steve Frame was one half of daytime's great supercouples with simpy Alice Matthews (Jacqie Courtney.) on early ANOTHER WORLD. A bad boy who came to have a rather sad later life, he once sent a thoughtful poem to me, Marlena De Lacroix.

NAME: Joel Crothers
SOAP ROLES: J. Stanfield Lee, SANTA BARBARA (1985); Miles Cavanaugh, THE EDGE OF NIGHT (1977-1984); Julian Cannell, SOMERSET (1972-1976); Ken Stevens, THE SECRET STORM (1969-1971); Joe Haskell/Nathan Forbes, DARK SHADOWS (1966-1969); THE DOCTORS

Alan Carter: He looked a little too much like Tom Selleck for anyone to think he was a good actor, but take away the mustache (rare for a soap good guy) and at the heart was a smart and always edgy performance on simmer, if not pre boil.

NAME: David Lewis
SOAP ROLES: Edward Quartermaine, GENERAL HOSPITAL (1978-1989, 1991-1993); Henry Pierce, BRIGHT PROMISE (1969-1972)

Connie Passalacqua Hayman (Marlena De Lacroix): As the original Edward Quartermaine, he made the character the ultimate in sarcastic and entertaining. No one did a throwaway line better. Just incomparable in scenes battling with Edward's daughter Tracy (deliciously played by Jane Elliot).

Patrick Erwin: Original recipe Edward Quartermaine – in a brilliant, blazingly sarcastic performance.

NAME: Jed Allan
SOAP ROLES: Edward Quartermaine, GENERAL HOSPITAL (2004-2006); Ed Grant, PORT CHARLES (2002-2003); Rush Sanders, BEVERLY HILLS, 90210 (1994-1999); C.C. Capwell, SANTA BARBARA (1986-1993); Don Craig, DAYS OF OUR LIVES (1971-1985); Paul Britton, THE SECRET STORM (1964-1965); Ace Hubbard, LOVE OF LIFE (1964)

Roger Newcomb: His Don Craig would be a great patriarch on DAYS right now.

NAME: Henderson Forsythe
SOAP ROLES: David Stewart, AS THE WORLD TURNS (1960-1990); David Stewart, OUR PRIVATE WORLD (1965); Jim Benson, FROM THESE ROOTS (1958-1960); Martin Sprode, THE EDGE OF NIGHT (1958)

Roger Newcomb: David and Ellen were such a huge part of AS THE WORLD TURNS history. I hope Forsythe is remembered in a flashback or photo before show ends its run.

EXCLUSIVE: GH Reacts to #1 Anthony Geary

As We Love Soaps has counted down the 50 Greatest Soap Actors of All Time, we have brought you quotes from current and former co-stars, producers and writers sharing their thoughts and memories of each. With the revelation that Anthony Geary has been named #1 by our panel, we have exclusive reaction from those who have worked with him on General Hospital.

Jill Farren Phelps: (executive producer of General Hospital) I remember the first moment Tony walked on the General Hospital stage all those years ago. He was this magical presence from the start – captivating and fearless and funny and brilliant. With Tony's entrance into General Hospital, a legend was born and a new standard was set.

I feel absolutely privileged to work with Tony today. He’s still a magical man – generous and humble and such an incredibly brave performer. I’m not ashamed to say that after all these years, Tony Geary continues to take my breath away.

Jonathan Jackson: (works with Geary on General Hospital) For me, Anthony Geary is not only the best daytime actor of all time, but one of the best actors of his generation period. Film, television or theatre; Tony Geary is on another planet from the average performer.

His raw, nuanced, fierce and unpredictable craft, along with his natural gift as a storyteller and writer enable Tony to explore the heights and depths of the human experience with passion and precision. He is a truly gifted and dedicated actor as well as an amazing person of grace and humility.

AWARDS:

1981 Daytime Emmy win for Outstanding Actor in a Daytime Drama Series
1980 Daytime Emmy win for Outstanding Actor in a Daytime Drama Series

COMMENTS FROM THE PANEL:
Roger Newcomb: My favorite actor from my favorite soap, ANOTHER WORLD. He may not have been the original Mac Cory, but he was certainly the one who made his mark on Bay City, daytime, and is being talked about still today, 21 years after his passing. Watson could play romance and drama, business stories, family drama and everything thrown at him from numerous head writers and producers. It was Mac's long relationship with Rachel and his father-daughter bond with Iris that really took ANOTHER WORLD to new heights in the '70s. Doug Watson's death left a gaping hole in AW that would never be filled.

AWARDS:
2004 Daytime Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award
1998 Soap Opera Digest Award Editor's Award win
1992 Soap Opera Digest Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor: Daytime

COMMENTS FROM THE PANEL:
Damon L. Jacobs:  It has become common in soap circles to heap tons of praise and awards on the bad-boy-turned-good.  But it is far too easy to ignore the integrity, strength, and skill required to play the good guy.  Don Hastings mastered this art portraying the upstanding, kind, and dignified Bob Hughes for most of the past 50 years.  The "melting ice cream" scene last summer, in which Bob appear disoriented, confused, and terrified, was only a sample of what this brilliant thespian is capable of.  His calming and reassuring presence will be sorely missed after September 2010.
