Hugo Napier with former ATWT co-star Colleen Zenk at the 5th Annual Indie Series Awards on
April 2, 2014. |
Hugo Napier is set to reprise the role of Larry Ashton, Tracy's (Jane Eliot) ex and Ned's (Wally Kurth) father, on ABC daytime soap opera
General Hospital. The character appeared in Port Charles from 1988-1989 and 1991-1992.
Napier's other soap roles include Gunnar St. Clair on
As the World Turns and Mike Roy in
All My Children.
Why couldn't ATWT have gotten Hugo Napier for the Series Finale?!
ReplyDeleteGunnar was never shown to have died, he just went up in the hot air balloon and never returned, if that wasn't an opening for an eventual return on a soap, I don't know what is!
The show could have planned a storyline arc involving Barbara receiving strange messages from someone that she is afraid could be James, only to discover it to be Gunnar. She is angry at first but after hearing his story of slowly returning to good health from a life threatening condition, they reconnect.
The show could have also ended on a slight cliffhanger with Barbara still deciding where her future lies, with Henry or with Gunnar?
Of course, good writing was no longer ATWT's forté in the last decade of that show's run.
I totally agree with you on the return of Gunnar to ATWT for the finale. Would have been great story writing!
ReplyDeleteIn my mind, Barbara and Gunnar were the best super couple in ATWT. I loved them together in the '80's!
I believe Gunnar and Barbara' s reunion makes more sense than how ATWT ended with Barbara and Henry, which was still good story writing. I wanted Barbara to be happy.
My favorite Barbara and Gunnar story when I was a kid was when Gunnar saved Barbara from the bull in Spain which James put in motion.
The second was the 'Strangers on a Train' story where Psychotic Richard Fairchild would kill Bob Hughes for John Dixon if John would kill Gunnar for him because he was obsessed with Barbara. Margo became the intended victim who survived Richard's obsession.
Great story writing by the late Douglas Marland.
But yes it would have been great to end ATWT with Gunnar and Barbara.
