Like Santos Ortega and Don MacLaughlin, William Johnstone, who played Judge Lowell on AS THE WORLD TURNS from 1956 to 1979, was a radio veteran. His credits included a role on Irna Phillips' early serial TODAY'S CHILDREN.
While Judge Lowell was never the center of any storyline, he was a comforting presence and source of wise counsel, particularly to his daughter-in-law Claire and granddaughter Ellen.
Does anyone out there recall how the character was phased out of the show in 1979?
I just wanted to thank you guys for all the beautiful pictures. As a huge fan that read the scrapbook at least 10 times, but has only been watching since 1999, I really enjoy being able to put faces with the names I read in the scrapbook. It's a real shame that they didn't bring back Penny or Ellen for the show's final episode...
ReplyDeleteI hope you know your hard work is truly appreciated!
Mr. Johnstone, like Mr. MacLaughlin, was another 1st class gentleman of soap opera characters from the past. RIP--both of them!
ReplyDeletewhile I don't know for sure, I would think because of his age that he died in both real life and on the show like Grandpa. But I don't know I'm just speculating. Great pictures, rare ones, I love them. Thank you.
