The soap has improved creatively in recent months and fans were hopeful that the show would be renewed for another year. Unfortunately CBS had other plans.
CBS canceled the long-running Guiding Light earlier this year and the show aired its final episode on September 18.
Production for ATWT will end in June, and the show will go off the air in September.
More to come...
UPDATE:
Read a press release from ATWT about the cancellation here.
"Throughout our history, AS THE WORLD TURNS has remained dedicated to sharing compelling stories that have entertained fans for more than five decades," said Executive Producer Chris Goutman. "We are disappointed and saddened by the news that the show is not being renewed. It will certainly be a loss for all of us, and for the show's loyal audience."
Even though we knew this was coming, it doesn't make it any less shocking. I actually gasped when I saw the tweet on Twitter. This makes me very sad!
ReplyDeleteIncredibly sad. I've been watching the show daily since February of 2000. I've been with it through all it's ups and downs. At least they seem to be going out on a creative high. I'm going to miss the characters and hope those actors are able to find more work soon!
ReplyDeletenooooooo! i am so heartbroken! i was expecting this but not so soon. im not ready!
ReplyDeleteNo words...
ReplyDeleteSO SAD.
I could cry.
Oh wow.
ReplyDeleteNow there will be no reason that I turn CBS on.
ReplyDeleteSo I read somewhere (maybe on here) that Lifetime wanted to pick up Guiding Light but they were approached too late and already had their fall schedule locked down. It's time for all of us to start writing the Lifetime network and telling them that we want to see ATWT on that channel!
ReplyDeleteAndy, it defintiely couldn't hurt. But I was thinking Otalia, with their huge young female audience, was a big selling point. I never got a straight story on the ins and outs of all that. As long as Telenext says they would be interested in continuing, it can't hurt to make sure they know you want them too as well as any possible outlets for the show.
ReplyDeleteI had a feeling this was coming, but I was praying that it was not going to happen. As The World Turns, has been getting better. I had a feeling that once I heard about ATWT, that it was not going to be long untill OLTL and Days were going to get cancelled. I had a dream about this actually last night, that it was cancelled.
ReplyDeleteThis makes me really sad, my grandmother and my mom will be really upset to hear about this, since we all watch this show.
I will be going from 7 soaps to 6. My list is getting to small, boo hoo
I had NO clue this was coming. This makes me so sad. I've been watching ATWT for well over 10 years now and it will be so sad to see it go.
ReplyDeleteWell, that clears out 5 hours a week of TV viewing for me.
Trying to find something positive to cling to, at least ATWT has been given a couple more months to wrap things up than GL was given. So I hope TPTB do it right. Also I hope to see old favorites return in the next year like GL did.
ReplyDeleteThis is awful, and it goes to show that CBS doesnt care about its viewers or viewer backlash, to cancel to soaps so quickly and close together proves this.
ReplyDeleteif they go through with this and cancel my favorite soap i will boycot cbs and never turn it on again
ReplyDeleteI am upset as well as soooo mad.. what are they thinking.. I hate.. and I do mean hate Let's make a deal.. for this they took Guiding Light off.. what are they going to put in ATWT's place.. come on.. you cannot tell me that Let's make a deal brings in more viewers than GL did..
ReplyDeleteDonna, I'm pretty sure it doesn't bring in more viewers than GL did; however, it is a *lot* cheaper to produce. That's the issue here I think, like everything else...money money money.
ReplyDeleteATWT just hired Ellen Wheeler as a director! Coincidence or Kiss of Death! You be the judge!
ReplyDeleteI am in shock!
ReplyDeleteI knew the show had big problems but never thought the cancelation date was so near.
I am in total shock. Sad day.
Damn!
ReplyDeleteWell, expletive deleted, soap dudes!
ReplyDeleteSomeone already beat me to the Ellen Wheeler/same week as cancellation crack, so I will just say: Expletive Deleted!
Wonder which Whose Line Is It Anyway reject will get to host the new Pyramid?
All I'm saying is when the curtain closes on ATWT, Martha Byrne sure as heck better be there.
ReplyDeleteCBS are fools, kiss of death to network television if you ask me. I boycotted CBS entirely except for ATWT - once it ends, I'll boycott them entirely.
I feel so angry & pissed off I simply can't go on without spouting off gutter-street-language style. Damn & Double Damn!
ReplyDeleteATWT is the last CBS show I ever watched. Now, I won't have any reason to watch CBS again.
ReplyDeleteI did hear that another network "could" pick it up! Let's just hope and pray that one does!! I am NOT ready to say goodbye to this soap!I've been watching it for 33 year's now and absolutlely love it more now than ever with the GREAT S/L'S! Why don't they get rid of Y&R? That ones become a really Horrible daytime Drama! It's more like Watch me if you want to really be depressed and really pissed off soap! Horrible! ATWT'S at least has ALWAY'S listened to thier fans! You can even Laugh and cry with ATWT'S and never walk away ready to SCREAM at how truly Disgusted you feel!

ReplyDeleteI guees it'll be replaced by another doctors show. Or joy, maybe another type of reality show. Oh well more room on my Tivo as I recorded it so I could watch it when I got home from work. It will be missed as much as Guiding Light. I can see CBS ratings falling from here.....
ReplyDeleteAnother sad day for the people that love SOAPS. One by one they are getting rid of all the soaps. It started for me when Another world was cancelled, then it was Guiding Light, now As The World Turns. I am on disability, and not able to get out that often, and I like escaping what is going on in the real world for a few hours in the afternoon. What are they going to put on the air now? Another OLD game show, or another talk show. I for one will not be watching. I will be doing a lot more reading. I wish the very best to all the people at GL and ATWT's. And to the powers that be....LEAVE MY OTHER SOAPS ALONE !
ReplyDeleteOMFG!!!!!!! u have got to be kidding me. first guiding light an now atwt!!!!!!CBS done lost their freakn minds!!!!! I hope nobody watches their channel nemore who wants to see those stupid game shows. I dont even like watching THE PRICE IS RIGHT anymore bc they made it stupid now. THE PRICE IS WRONG B!T!H!!!! young and the restless and b@b didnt have nothin on guiding light or as the world turns. I gave them a second chance after guiding light but HELL NO NOT THIS TIME!!! I am PISSED!!! CBS go out of businessi hope u never get another viewer again dummies
ReplyDeleteWhat the H...eck is wrong with CBS? Do they want people to stop watching the freaking station. My grandmother watched the Price is right and she is dead. Damn, Jack and Carly finally got back together. CBS sucks big time and I do mean cock. This is the worst decision since you made the stupid decision to cancel Guiding Light.I am not sad, I am pissed!!!!!!Who wants to watch Brook Logan sleep with everybody.

ReplyDeleteI have TIVO and couldnt understand why ATWT's was not taping. Now I know that CBS cancelled it. What the hell are they thinking. I cannot believe it. I also watched Big Brother this year on CBS & thought it was the worst season ever. (Some might not think this if you have not watched the live feeds or Showtime, but believe me if you did most agree with me). I think CBS has lost their minds. WTF! I don't understand. CBS if you are reading this you are LOSING a lot of your viewers, including me!
ReplyDeleteI don't believe that you people know anything about what the viewer's want because if you did As the World Turns would still be on the air. Bring back As the World Turns, the 2 best soaps on TV are As the World Turns and The Young & The Restless.
ReplyDeleteSincerely
Pissed Off Viewer
Wow! Can't believe it! You can't say not enough people were watching... 53 years, something was right about the show.
ReplyDeleteWoah! I’m really enjoying the template/theme of this website. It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s very difficult to get that “perfect balance” between usability and visual appeal. I must say you have done a excellent job with this. Also, the blog loads extremely quick for me on Chrome. Outstanding Blog!
